Not trying to derail the thread, but I was looking for some insight on comments in the last thread. Maybe I should have replied there, but I once made the mistake of replying in a dead thread before and time ran out before I understood the complaint.

What don't you like about my faces? I've heard that a few times, but it's usually too vague to learn anything. I figure the possibilities are either a dislike of style, or a critique on anatomy/drawing skill. Or both.

I know my art style is pretty unique, and I once thought that was the most important quality I could have and tried to be as unique as possible. I've since realized that was a mistake.

I see myself mostly as a webcomic author, a mediocre relic one. I don't know about other artists, but I think I improved a lot the first few years I was making comics. Then you start to stagnate because you are trying to produce as much as possible, spending all of your time to meet deadlines and try to make everyone look consistent. Eventually you even start getting worse because you try to streamline and speed up the process. And if you do notice and try to correct yourself, you have memorized the wrong way to do things. Other artists might have had a similar experience.

I did fetish webcomics, which also means that I almost never got any constructive comments, only requests. And now with the webcomic I do, almost all comments are that Pulse is too busty. So I've gone from fetish requests to complaints about the one character's breast size.

It's very true I probably still focus too much on producing stuff, and not enough on practice and learning. I've tried seeking out critiques.

So, what would you suggest would make the faces and/or art more appealing to you? Do you think just improving on the fundamentals would solve it, or is it also a style issue?

Maybe it is the faces? Are they too wide and flat? I bet if you took a sample of random fairly common heads and superimposed them on top of your own characters you would see things stick out.

Good christ it's been forever since I've seen your stuff. You were one of the first artists I found for this fetish waaaaay back in the day.

So, a cursory glance of your newer stuff shows that your style has, more or less, stayed the same.

The faces are probably a direct result of your style. Going through the last 15 or so pages of Pulse shows a wide range of great to mediocre. I think you need to tighten up on the fundamentals of your styles anatomy. Clearly, it does work.

I think the line work is too thick considering how busy these panels are. The coloring is flat, and lacks shade, tone, and texture. Yes, the chins are too pointy. The faces as a whole don't feel like 3D objects and suffer from "teenage anime sketch" syndrome where the alignment of eyes, nose, and mouth is all over the place, and they don't seem to possess human skulls. This is still solid work for a fetish artist, though. Not quite fappable, but it has potential.

From a glance based on your example image:
- Your faces are too short + wide, which leads to them looking "squished"
- There are too many hard angles in your facial outlines, especially around the jawline, which leads to them looking pointy/bony/manish
- Similarly, pentagonal eyes just look weird
- Lack of shading + hard angles works if it's the whole art style, but in your case that's just the faces, which contrast with the soft curves and feathered shading present elsewhere on the same bodies and end up appearing very flat as a result
- Facial features (eyes, nose, mouth) are poorly-aligned both with one another and with the boundaries of the face itself
- Too many stock anime expressions/reactions, bringing to mind those early 2000s "how to draw anime" books

And finally, on a more personal note, I can't stand it when fetish artists try too hard to make their art "comedic." I'm not saying you can't inject some humor into your work, but when you've got multiple punchlines in the same image and wacky anime faces/chibishit in every panel, it just comes across as a childish attempt to obscure the real intent of your art (which is to indulge in a fetish). It's like those shitty porn sites you sometimes see that are trying really poorly to disguise themselves as humor sites (which just so happen to be full of nudes, because that's so funny, haha!). That's not impartial critical advice, though, so make as much or as little of it as you wish.
