from what I recall it was initially a way to get people to get requests for size matters, since the issue was he'd get a bunch of requests every month and they'd all be of characters, which meant he had to spend all his time drawing those instead of working on the game

I can think of a bunch of artists/producers who switched to patreon and their productivity slowed to a trickle.It's basically become a situation where: "I produced free work you liked for years, and now that I actually have a way to profit, you crowd-pay me thousands retrograde for all that and I don't really have to """work""" anymore.

I can name half a dozen people on patreon (not all gts or even art related) that suddenly announced "real life" problems like illnesses or family troubles not too long after switching over that "prevented them from creating any new work for an indefinite period of time".

In general though, the stupidest thing about Patreon (or rather the common public who don't understand how it works) is that the genral populace still doesn't understand that it's literally "I am giving free donations to this artist because I claim to like them, and I am not entitled to ANYTHING" and they think, well, that they're paying some kind of giant grup commission or something.

The thing about that is that Patreon is NOT a straight up monthly donation box. It is very clearly set up with incentives to give money to the artist with obligations that the artist sets for every tier of monthly payment.
