1. That depends very greatly on what you're doing and what you're using, but it isn't the easiest or cheapest kink to enjoy or film, that's true.

TV producers (and others!) making slime properly tend to use food-grade thickeners like Natrasol (or other similar grades of ethylcellulose/methylcellulose), and "gunge powder" as it's known is now readily and cheaply available from several suppliers who ship internationally and buy in bulk from the chemical companies who make it, even including poster paint mixed in for easy colouring and mixing. It washes out and down easily (usually) and the texture is much as you see here.

If your recipe includes PVA glue as a base instead, throw your recipe in the bin and don't use it! Borax (boracic acid) can sometimes be used for crosslinking to make especially stringy slimes (like a 'cum' effect), but needs to be thoroughly mixed and you must be careful of skin or eye contact with the raw powder (even mixed in high concentrations it may sting eyes).

Better, a bathtub full of nuru "lotion" can be made from one or two bottles as it readily absorbs water. A bathtub full of custard is about a hundred litre cartons in my experience. A bucketful can be a surprisingly large amount to play with on its own, and a few is enough for a really fun session and is quite inexpensive overall.

If you're doing it en masse it can be expensive. Certainly shoots can be a lot to set up, many studios wouldn't allow it (no matter how much prep/protection you do), of course model fees on top of camera equipment - I think production has about reached saturation (pun intended). It is a decadent, ridiculous, sensual kink for sure.

2. I've never done it myself as the strong chocolatey smell puts me off (I'm never using Nutella again!), but I think people usually use chocolate pudding mix plus a bit of extra water or oil - you'd have to experiment with ratios.

In part, they usually are and that will help to make it smell nice and feel more pleasant on your skin - however you will often find that the main ingredient in the ones you'll want to use for a really good messy session is in fact an aqueous sodium polyacrylate crosspolymer. That is what creates the effect you see - once melted in warm water and poured in, it absorbs over 200 times its volume in water and expands to essentially thicken the water in your bathtub. Honey can be washed out with warm enough water and (like a really good slime) leaves your hair soft and smooth. And you smell of honey afterwards. That's not a bad thing.

Methylcellulose, ideally Natrasol because it's also coated so it is possible to mix it cold without lumps, otherwise you need to use warm water from the tap, sprinkle the right amount of powder in and stir until it cools/dissolves/thickens (several minutes), because normal methocel doesn't disperse in cold water but doesn't dissolve in hot water - that's still my preferred approach because then you have nice warm gunge you can tip over someone almost immediately!

It's better if you leave it for an hour or so once mixed to finish thickening and for the bubbles to come out.

You can buy gunge powder easily off Gemma (MessySupplies), or Dave, on eBay (or Gemma's site). Both are good suppliers and can sell from a bag to like a ton.

Some people use powder paints simply mixed with the thickener powder (suppliers often sell it pre-coloured), or you can use the plain powder and colour the water first, which is what I do. Dribbling little bits of colouring in later on can make the mottled effects that really make it pop.

Depending on thickness you can get the umbrella effect in a gunge tank (fairly thin) through to a custard-like consistency, through to something thick and crawling - but be careful of powdery lumps when going too thick.

For more exotic effects, careful use of borax (a salt of boric acid - be careful: wear gloves and a mask when handling the borax powder) can crosslink the polymer and turn your custard-like mess into stringy, filmy, stretchy alien drool that is incredible fun to play with, but be a little careful of it stinging the eyes if you use too much.

Paint mixing drill attachments help, especially if you're mixing more than one bucket - if you're running a shoot you really could use one, or two, or three, and spare drill batteries.

Or you could just use custard! That has the advantage that unlike gunge, it tastes good -and requires no further prep. Always get cartons, never tins. I learned that one the hard way.

Location is generally as close to zero budget as possible (that's why you infamously see so many plastic lawn chairs in WAM videos, and baths, and people's back rooms)! We know, are trusted by, and are involved with a few local studios so I think we got extremely preferential rates - many studios balk at the potential difficulty however.

Materials vary widely. Gunge is about the cheapest, it's worth splurging out more (ha) to get the good stuff. People aren't eating the food in many cases so it's discount aisle time. I can't adequately describe the looks we'd get from checkout staff... some of them would ask us if we were organising a party. (Sort of, yes.) One time a lovely old lady behind us asked if we were making a trifle. (Yes. A very big trifle. That is exactly what we are doing.) Do it enough times and I'm pretty sure the staff know!

I think our largest shoot we spent about a grand on mess? I don't really want to go through the receipts. You can fill a bath with custard for just about £80 (around a hundred cartons), and we buy gunge powder in bulk (was actually given a bunch of it for participating in one shoot!).

Meanwhile it takes roughly a ton-ish of gunge powder to make a dunk tank full of gunge, based on what another producer told me - over a grand worth, so you want to amortise that over several shoots if you can, which you sort of can because you can reuse. (Look at old Get Your Own Back and notice that they film over a few days and cheap xanthan gum they used was basically just reused and topped up from episode to episode.) This sucks if you're the last one in and it is several days old, lumpy, and smells of paint and celery.

On the other hand, not a lot of people buy shoots, so no matter what your budget you have trouble breaking even.

My point is one shoot usually (by necessity) makes several pieces of content, and there are a lot of other factors too, so it's hard to determine.

One factor we noticed is that these days ironically the amount spent on a shoot tends to be perversely disproportionate to the number of sales! A girlfriend in a bath with £30 of mess sometimes massively outsells (and out-profits) a fancy overproduced thing involving professional models, expensive cosplay, etc. This (and the UMD factor) is the larger reason for the more amateur shift I think - it's really hard to predict what people want, and what they say they want is often very different to what they actually buy.

You'd think commissions/customs which guarantee a return would be more reliable, but they tend to cater to overly-specific sub-niches, not reusable, and a little troublesome - also, tend to get more flakes which can be a big risk.

Couldn't really say about session work, you'd probably have to ask someone like Candy.

Oh - now I think about it, most expensive material was probably something like honey, golden syrup or black treacle, or maybe even actually whipped cream in large quantities - in particular leaves the kind of lingering vanilla smell that even after several showers gets you curious looks on the train back...

There's a pixiv artist named "transmitter" that I'm kind of interested in. I am not a mud enthusiast, but the others talking about clay are 100% along the right lines from everything I've heard - Gemma sells cosmetic-grade bentonite clay in bulk off MessySupplies. That would be my first choice.

Making it with warm water will be the way to go. Heating or reheating any kind of thick gunk is, let me tell you, a recipe for disaster. You'll never get the heat even (this bit is cold/this bit is scaldingly hot!), and you'll almost unavoidably cause unaesthetic lumps, burn out immersion heaters, other fun stuff you want to avoid. "Heat up a hole in the ground somehow and keeping the clay fluid" is something that I honestly wouldn't even know where to start with.

You will need extra buckets to hold mess, as you'll need to water it down for it to go down a bath plughole.

Dunk Tank Dave did an entire dunk tank full of clay once - he doesn't have a studio anymore I think so he might not be able to organise a session for you, but if you want advice on logistics in that area he'd probably be the best person to ask?
