You know, what allways bugged me about all this kickstarter and patreon stuff is, what is being paid with that money? This is less about fenoxo and more about all of it together. If you think about it, making a game is hard work and sometimes requires money that is used for materials (such as new hardware). Games that actually use graphics and such, would probably use up those 30k without leaving much to the actual programmers.

But yes, 30k for a couple of dudes writing a textbased game is kinda over-the-top.

btw, I remember playing a textbased game years ago where you could be different races and genders. You started out in a city and had to go through a sewer to get out of it, but the game stopped there when I last played it. The visuals were fallout-ish. Finishing a project doesn't matter. All that matters is that people paying are happy with what they get every month.

It's true a lot of people refuse to remove their pledges due to feeling a sunken cost or not wanting to lose access, which is why the paywall is kind of cheating, but that's more the people's faults, really. If they're not happy, they should stop paying.

I'm kind of wondering how to define space. Inside a house it's easy. But behind a bush or building? I'm not sure how to systematically define that. I could easily do a line-of-sight check to all NPCs and see if anyone can see, but that doesn't stop someone from going near it. Maybe also check any "common" tiles (ie path, roads, sidewalks, etc) and see if they have vision to the area you're playing doctor in?

Then what happens if someone walks in on you... I guess the loli's reaction is less important, since more likely they'll just call the cops on you.

If your NPC's have different cycles for day and night and they are less active in the night, you can enable that option and go with the line of sight check.

Good point, we will be addressing that on our website on our three days off from work this week. (Sorry for some reason my brain thought this is the 5th thread you will be posting in screw mentioning that Malapose Mayhem is a text based exploration game. Though I suppose the game really doesn't have an objective yet. The game is in its early stages at the moment so I figure we have some time to get things straightened out and filled in.)

What story format are you using in Twine? I was working with Sugarcube 2 and I'm fairly certain you need to be using the same format else it won't work. Or if you don't want to copy it directly, you can just open it to see what I did, then translate it on your own to whatever format you're using.

I would highly recommend switching to Sugarcube 2 though, there's a lot of documentation for it and it seems like the most robust story format a beginner can use effectively.

Don't take this the wrong way, but your game is visually terrible. The background image behind the text doesn't take up the whole screen, and something about the black-white-black color transition hurts my eyes more than usual for text games. Worse, the artistic "fade out" towards the edges of the background image eats the black text, which means the user has to scroll more than usual to get the text into a readable position.

You also probably want to do some editing/proofreading, doubly so if >>7422315 is true.

Oh I post on here all the time, I just don't normally do it with a trip. Old anon habits die hard.

But like I said earlier, I've been working on a game with a coder, which is nice because my programming skills are shit. I'm doing design and writing, he's taking care of translating my nonsensical ramblings and building something functional.

And on a closing note, if someone is interested but doesn't want to fuck around downloading the file, pic related shows off how it works. Hey /dgg/, first time posting here.
I'm currently working on a text adventure game inspired by the mechanics of CoC (god, what game isn't by now?) but with a bigger focus on a complete, singular story, and without any combat whatsoever (more of a resource management game).
The setting is largely inspired by a quote by the creator of chobits who mentioned how interesting it would be that, if instead of throwing up an 'error code', a computer would simply talk to you about what was wrong with it.
That then became the idea of a computer being essentially a human with robot like functions.

So, that's where my game comes in. The plot is that you are a fresh-out-of-college computer technician who comes across a series of damaged/malfunctioning P.S.Us (Personal Service Units) and you take care of them, however you choose.
The idea is to get a feeling similar to Teaching Feeling, where you can either take extremely good care of the robots and love them tenderly, or abuse them and turn them into sex objects if you wish.

I'm using Game Maker to make it, since I'm comfortable with it and I actually own it. Right now all I really need to do is fill in content, since my engine is working (almost) just how I want it, but it's with that content that I come to you guys.
I need some opinions.

First, let me describe some mechanics. I only have two right now, money and stamina. Money is gained automatically through your job, but you can do freelance to increase it. You spend it on various parts and pieces for your P.S.Us and even purchase a discounted one eventually. Stamina drains after doing most active things in the game, such as going to the city, working freelance, or doing anything lewd with your robots. However, most looking and movement is free. The reason Stamina exists is to create a psuedo 'day' system, which causes your only option after running out of stamina to sleep, and sleeping progresses certain events.

Now, here's my issue and why I'm coming to you guys. Right now, the way the game plays, it feels like a blend of a Western porn game and an Eastern visual novel. Even though you can choose how to spend your stamina for the day, there's really very few 'wrong' options, and you never really have to strategize or make decisions. You just play out the game as it's written, making certain choices down the line if you want to or not. Right now I have no 'bad ends' in the game, though I have thought about adding 'bad ends' to some of the robots.
But I just don't know what would be ideal. The gamer in me makes me want to add something to the game, even if it's something stupid like minigames that you have to complete for certain scenes. But maybe I don't need that? Is it ok just to play out a simple story with just some choices along the way (like Teaching Feeling)?

That's the biggest thing I need help with right now. I can go into more detail if you'd like, feel free to ask questions.
The game isn't presentable right now though, so no downlinks or anything.
I should also mention I have absolutely no plans to sell it or anything like that, it's really just for fun and to fap to.

Superman was supposed to be gone (didn't come up for a reaosn why) so WW was running the justice league. And was trying to overcompesate by being more militant. (A cool gag I came up is that amazons being the most womanful women would always be able to lactate and would become a weak spot for them) Batman would eventually become bore of her trying to dictate him how to handle gotham/take him down and would essentially train her to become the most notorious whore.

A romance tale between selina and batman, and they meeting each other with their humans identities. (Selina would talk about her boyfriend, as you get closer to her as batman, so you realize she's into you)

And then another arc with Superwoman infiltrating batman clique on WW behalf trying to find dirt on him. (that he was a pervert) but batman outwitting her. (Which would be his breaking bad moment to go full savage on WW)

Have any specific examples? I guess there would need to be something that drains constantly besides stamina, that you'd have to put effort into maintaining. But I don't really know what a young adult needs to take care of besides bills.
Another game that comes to mind is Princess Maker, or Long Live the Queen. Where each day you can assign your character to a task to gain stats, and then events would happen that basically checked your stats and changed based on them.
I'm not sure if that would be enjoyable in a porn game though. It would make you want to run through it multiple times I supposed.

Uh, so platformer, but just as a means of movement, you know? The actual platforming is irrelevant, I want it to be open world, branching paths, many different biomes.
I was really inspired by FOBS because its about puzzle solving, a lot of these platform games make you fight the things that you as the player want to fuck, thats weird and counterintuitive. Sorry forgot to address that. I want to allow the player to make the choice. Like in the handbook with monster info or the player's bio or whatever it might say, "How do you feel about Frogs?" and then you can select like a happy face, or a sad face, or a "AAHHHH YOUR FUCKING MY BRAINS OUT AND I LOVE IT!!" face, or something like that. I haven't tried running through the entire update yet, but you could already get an alien end. If you're talking about the Boss TF, no. Based on what zxc's saying, I'm pretty sure there isn't even a boss yet. So, one to two more stage screens, a boss screen and design, and the TF divided into two parts, six to ten weeks. And that's without continuing this trend of updating all the monster sprites and designs.

I think you're looking at the wrong way. It's not about the size of the image, but the way the elements of your game are presented relative to each other.

The closest comparison I can make is CoC. It has the "old scroll" background, but that extends to every "player usable" element of the page and beyond. There is a distinct border between the text area and the edge of the game window. In short, the artistic intent does not impede functionality.

What you should look into isn't just making the image bigger (or automatically stretching it to fit bigger/wider monitors), but making sure the text window doesn't bleed onto the image's edges. Alternatively, you need text that is visible regardless of background. One solution to that (taken from the gif-maker's playbook) is white/black text with an outline of the opposite color, so that it's visible regardless of which background it appears over.

Brutal honesty and constructive criticism. I'll try to keep it concise.

1. Writing - It's not good. It's not just about the quality of the writing, but the overall feeling of neglect and apathy I get from reading it. There are numerous grammatical errors, very poorly structured sentences, etc. It feels both uninspired and rushed. Also, see pic related. This is exactly what everyone complains about regarding Fenoxo's games; don't turn your game into "click a button, read a novel." If you're going for a CoC-like, shorter text that focuses more on scene variations based on your character's physical appearance, TFs, etc, rather than static blocks of text.

2. Code - It's still bad, and getting worse. The problems other anons have already pointed out persist, and continue to multiply with each update. I can only assume you have no coding experience at all. Also, you are using the wrong story format. Yours is designed for very simple CYOA games, which you are not making. For actual 'games,' sugarcube is the only worthwhile option short of sugarcane, which is pure javascript. The longer you delay this switch, the more difficult it will eventually be.

3. Interface - Too much time is being spent on it by someone who has no idea what they're doing. Poor background choices with conflicting colors, difficult to read font, lack of separators between element choices, etc. The fact that you have these UI elements without any CSS or Javascript in your game is very telling.

My advice: Start over. Toss everything out. Spend a month or two writing out your game, working on your writing, and learning more about SugarCube/Javascript/CSS if that's what you plan to make this in. I've been helping other people with their Twine games for over two years now, and it is immediately obvious that this one has a very limited future unless many fundamental changes are made soon.

I'm sure there is an audience out there for people looking to read novels. I mean, people do read and pay for Fenoxo's crap. But at the same time, a key element in so many CoC-likes is player customization, and all of that is lost if the player gets to read the same static block of text regardless of what their character is like. It's far too difficult to write lengthy amounts of text for every conceivable option, but I would look at something like FC as a middle ground. The text is long enough to fill up a page worth of content, but also short enough that bits and pieces of each scene can be dependent on how the player or the slave look.

Short and modular text adds immersion, and gives the player the feeling that his choices actually matter. It also adds variation and replayability. Of course, if the dev isn't going for player customization as a primary component of their game, then static blocks of text work fine.

In regards to code, I am no professional but I'd recommend checking out the programming general in /g/. Take a look at how code is structured for readability, there's a logical flow. If you have no experience, try and download some resources or check some YouTube videos.

Additionally (and I'm gonna sound like a shill but) there's a site called Udemy which is a virtual school for lack of a better term. It has classes/courses you can buy that are structured videos and lessons created by professionals that you can do at your own pace. Normally, the classes are way overpriced, but there's a big sale going on right now (I think most courses are about $10). I've got a couple I've bought (notably for C# and Java) and they can be very helpful. Like I mentioned before, there are free resources you can utilize as well.

Content has been a bit stale lately, so I guess I'll dump what I've been working on.

It's a currently unnamed lewd roguelike; near-future, post-apocalyptic. I've been wanting to develop it for at least a year now, but haven't had time to actually start on it until last week. Thematically, it draws bits of inspiration from Wasteland, Fallout{1,2}, The Road, and The Last of Us. Mechanically, many of the planned features (base/power grid building, vehicle construction, etc.) were introduced to me through Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead. The intended level of autistic detail will naturally come from Dwarf Fortress.

Pic related shows a basic ASCII map, character movement, and a shell UI. It's not much yet, but it's at least more than an idea or a doodle. I am working on an optional tileset, since ASCII can be a mess at times, but that has a very low priority at this stage.

Regarding lewd content, the fetishes of interest to me personally (and thus, the ones that will see implementation first) include: rape/kidnapping, slavery, bestiality, pregnancy, incest, {fem,lez}dom, monster girls (e.g. kitsunes), questionable ages, ryona, headpats, happy romantic relationships, and guro. The visibility of such content would largely depend on the player's actions, since roguelikes are generally not story-driven. Some of that content is obviously a major turn-off to some, and I do plan to implement a per-fetish toggle. There will be absolutely no furries, nor a Patreon, and I have no plans for TF content. Much of the lewd content will be centered around 'interactions' with NPCs, rather than lewds-through-combat. For that, I intend to use a completely different UI (think of Fallout 2's NPC interaction screen, or the eragames).

Anyways, I'm not going to split this into multiple posts, so I'll end it here. Keep your expectations flat on the floor and I'll do my best to make this something other than vaporware. In the meantime, enjoy the TiTS posts.

No. Fixing error messages is barely important. You do that through SO/Google and even a monkey could do it.

These h-games are not small projects, you must learn patterns to prevent yourself from being locked into a bad situation in the future. The last thing you want is to be in a circumstance in which anything you want to add to your project requires hours of work just because you need to go through a book of terrible old code.

Performance is not really important either, seeing as CPUs are so fast, so it's about making code that's maintainable, rather than fast. For a text-game to become slow one would have to actively fuck up, too.

Hah, it's funny seeing that thing mentioned. I was one of the original programmers working on it.

If anyone's curious, it died paritally because the artist leading the project was a primadona who didn't want to do anything resembling hard work and got buttmad anytime someone criticized anything he came up with, and partially because we couldn't attract any decent writers.

He also had no idea about how to design a game and basically just wanted to make a disjointed copy of CoC, waifu spam and all, but in a different setting.

Actually, now that I remember, he also used to be really shit at communicating his ideas or designs for the setting, and any time I tried to get him to be more specific about how things should work he would always be really vague, but then when I showed him what I came up with he'd reply. "No this is how things should actually be."

I've toyed with the idea of picking up the project again, but I'm no writer and I'm not sure how far I could get on my own.

About 5 minutes for each .swf. The .apks are being made by lance from 8/f/. He was away from his computer for the last two releases, but mobile builds should resume with *.51.

This could obviously be abused if the creator puts out insignificant updates just to ensure payment, but many of the groups that I see using this type of model are working on things where updates can only consist of a uniform amount of content, so an update is always the same size/quality.

For that system, the pledgers can actually choose how many updates they're willing to pay for (e.g. $5 per update, maximum of one updates). As far as I know, in that case, the pledger would only be charged $5 regardless of whether the creator puts out 1 or 10 updates, and I think the pledger still gets access to all of them.

The reason no one in the H-Game dev scene does this is because it means they would have to actually do work to be paid.

It doesn't. It's true that both patrons and devs are using patreon wrong, though.

Per-month can be both an incentive to keep working well or an incentive to never be out of projects, but not an incentive to make "slow updates". Because if your patrons become unhappy, they remove their pledge.

If it was like in KickStarter or something, your "clients" would have already paid you upfront and they're not getting that money back. Through per-month, they're only giving you a tiny portion of what they can give you, and you must keep working to keep them happy.


The issue right now is devs putting huge paywalls (which coerce people into paying when they don't want to) and then patrons refusing to take out their pledge out of a silly sense of losing their previous investment, even though by continuing to pledge they're only losing more money.

Maybe the problem will sort itself out when there are too many devs for too little patrons and people start choosing which ones to support.

Patreon is not about funding a project, but funding a person. If he was literally spending it all on hookers, there'd not be a thing wrong about it. The only thing that matters is whether or not his patrons are happy about his work. And if they are not, they should just remove their pledges and let him dry.
