Whenever the "community" does an anonymous poll for gender, the ratio usually comes out at something like 25-33% female. Some places are more male dominated than others, but overall the numbers aren't as depressing as it seems at first glance. I know a lot of people who assume the fraction of female participants is <5%.

There are a number of factors at play here, but the most relevant seems to be as you said: a load of these women (including those we've asked in these 4chan threads) tend to get a bunch of annoying messages when they "out" themselves. However, from memory, there was a surprisingly good mix of men/women shown in the images. I think women who want to be the dominant party would prefer to portray their dominance slightly more indirectly.
