Also if the slaves aren't worshipful towards you, they'll get a massive devotion penalty when they win. And getting two slaves to be a close match in the lethal pit can get expensive.

What are elements that you consider essential for a character creator?

That really depends what kind of game this is, what the limitations are, etc.
For some games a choice between male and female might not even make sense, for others it might be essential.
If you have graphics, you will naturally have to limit the customization far more than for a text based game.
However, don't include anything in your character creator the rest of your game can't support. Nothing is more infuriating than getting to chose when there is no content for it or you having a 12' whale dick being completely inconsequential.
So I'd say it's rather about sensible limitations than anything else.

This is the most important element for a character creator. It doesn't matter how many hundreds of interesting choices a game provides if they have no content tied to them.

I think a character creator should be created near the end of development. It is essentially a way of looking back on what you've made, and giving players an immediate path towards some of that content. If you start development by making a character creator first, it just forces you to add content for each item later, which you may have no interest in doing.

On a more serious note, it depends on the type of game and if it has graphics or not (in a text-only game I'd even say that having LESS aesthetic options and simply being very vague is better, as it allows you to imagine the character however you want). Also, if your game is sandbox-ish and includes a large mixture of different fetishes, being able to define your character's preferences (and then have him/her act accordingly when facing such content) is a must.

Letting you pick an alignment or personality (and actually adjust your dialogs to fit it) is something I haven't seen and would be nice, but likely a pain to implement.


All that said, a faceless protagonist works too, as more effort should probably go into making the characters you fuck, rather than the one you control.

* Download the dev kit.
* Save the default game, and chose to debug it
* Once the debugger is running, use it to open the game you really want to play
* Change whatever setting you want.

Has any game actually nailed RPG gameplay that also features an submissive protagonist? I'm looking for games that successfully does that, it seems hard because RPG systems empower the player while submissive characters sort of have to be on the receiving end and depowered. In what way? The screenshot didn't include any of the DE, so your only information would be the text on-screen, and that's not enough information to conclusively decide on which operating system someone is using.
