>>

HRT is pretty damn magic, so you might be able to start working on that earlier than the invention of robot bodies.
>>
>>7219000
That's not really how this shit works. Look at any past technology, and it's always existed in some form in the academic, military, or industrial worlds way before it became available to consumers. Look at VR; shit existed in nasa in the '70s. People tend to think of VR as "failing" in the late '80s and '90s, but the reality is that even then it continued to see use in the academic/military realm until finally enough development brought the BOM cost more in line with something viable as a consumer product.

It's similarly early days with the kind of biomedical tech we want. A lot of amazing work is being done specifically with genetic modification and creation of artificial organs, but it's all mostly academic proof of concept type stuff. It's even worse in medicine, since shit has to go through clinical trials in order to prove that it's safe. My guess is that best case scenario, 10-20 years from now we'll have had enough development to start seriously thinking about transplanting brains into artificial bodies (artificial organs become developed enough to consider creating an artificial body out of them). 10ish years after that we might start to see experimental implementations of that. If that pans out, it'll be at least another ten years for the kinks to get worked out; clinical trials to prove that shit works, as well as development that brings the costs more in line with what consumers can afford. Based on current trends, that's about 30-40 years before we can transplant brains into artificial bodies.

All told, I guess another way of saying it is that cyberization as it is now hasn't even reached pong or spacewar levels of development, while we're sitting here dreaming about something more in line with a current gen PC gaming rig. Even in my overly optimistic view, it's pretty far out.

If it turns out like Soma though where you get 'copied' into the new body and its a roulette of if you're in the new or old one, definitely time to an hero.
>>
>>7223500
I'm not sure how you see this working if not via "copying".

I guess you could try some kind of biological brain -> robotic body interface. Might be an intermediate step, based on the complexity of recreating specific brains.

I'd be happy to kill myself to create a robot with my exact brain pattern though. Based on my understanding of personal identity it would be no different from blinking and finding yourself in another body.
>>
>>7219937

hahahah no chance, add about 30 years to that timeline. we're not at pong levels, we're at vacuum-tubes and multiroom computer levels.

>>
>>7223506

> I'd be happy to kill myself to create a robot with my exact brain pattern though. Based on my understanding of personal identity it would be no different from blinking and finding yourself in another body.

"You" wouldn't experience the aftermath of that, because "you" would be dead.

The copy in the robot would be pretty happy about it, though.
>>
>>7223508
I dunno, I think a lot of this depends on when we reach AI singularity. I imagine that once we hit that point technological progress will speed up exponentially and there are a lot of people who are saying that may only be three or four decades away.

Those people are optimistic, but so am I, especially for our prospects once we reach that point. Once we reach the point where we can build a machine that is truly smarter than man then it's quite likley that we will very rapidly discover things that have never even been considered.
>>
>>7223514
This.

When I said GitS style,I meant that brain-bot interface that would allow a straight transfer. Why would I let some alternate version of me have the fun while I sit and suffer?

Alternatively, what about if medical science found a way to preserve the brain indefinitely?Put it in an otherwise fully cybernetic body?I'd be down for that even.

This is the result....I guess.
>>
>>7223500
But in Soma, you were fucked no matter what. There's a copy of you placed in the machine, but the "original" that the copy came from is still kicking around.
>>
>>7223514
Silly. When "you" go to sleep, "you" never wake up, because the "you" that wakes up lacks continuity of experience with the old "you", based on that logic.

Basing personal identity on continuity of physical matter sounds like it works, but of course it doesn't because every atom in your brain gets recycled with regularity, and besides at a subatomic level the concept of "unique particles" itself gets lost. Basing identity on continuity of experience doesn't work, because even normal human lives have various breaks in continuity, like sleep and being knocked unconscious.

Only the pattern of information represented in the brain provides a reasonable origin of personal identity, unless you want to postulate some kind of epiphenominal soul.
>>
>>7224886
Continuity of experience is what gives us a sense of existence, though. No amount of conviction that "you" exist outside of your currently perceived experience will calm down the dread you feel when it's about to come to an end.

Maybe not the first time, but if you were a being who never had to sleep, maybe you would be similarly terrified of your first nap.

If and when this kind of transfer of consciousness becomes commonplace, it will likely seem no more fearful or dreadful than going to sleep.

>>7223615

AI singularity is a badly thought out religion.
>>
>>7225049
>>7224886
>>7225000

Old Man's War addressed this problem by having consciousness transfer between bodies in such a way that the person was, for a brief moment, in control of BOTH bodies (and aware of both), and then the old body would shut off.

Interesting idea.

>Those people are optimistic

Those people are idiots, and/or they're trying to sell something. These are the Silicon Valley technonarcissists who live their lives completely inside a thought bubble, surrounded by paid yesmen. They seem to really believe if they take a bajillion vitamins a day and give themselves blood transfusions from young people they'll live long enough to get immortality via gene therapy. Also that Mars colonization is ever going to be a real thing.

There will never be an AI singularity, or any kind of singularity for that matter. Yearly refinements of disposable consumer crap is not progress, and finding new ways to break the law and screw workers is not innovation.

Far more likely is that in the coming decades our first-world way of life, which is at the end of a very long and fragile supply chain, not to mention based on a metric fuckton of human misery and unthinking resource exploitation, will come crashing down. Probably shockingly quickly.

Whatever, he's just some kid on the internet, confusing cynicism with wisdom. You hear the same things from nihilistic teenagers anywhere.

Here are the only two facts of the matter. If you think there's something ineffable and unique about the human mind or intelligence that makes it impossible to ever design an artificial intelligence, you're an idiot. And if you think you have the slightest clue what an artificial intelligence smarter than you would do, you're an even bigger idiot.

That's all a singularity is, a bend in the future past which you can't see. A point where predictions become random guesses.

Her left hand could be explained by simply being out of the field of view (kind hard to see right in front of your own shoulder when looking straight forward) but the phone would still be visible.

Another wrong thing is that neither the camera, nor her eyes are level with the PoV meaning it's neither a picture from the phone, nor a view through her eyes.
