The point is that mitochondria can be used as an inheritance model for what we need to enable mermaid-human reproduction. While literal mitochondria are insufficient for the task, something with a similar inheritance but can express its genes to the rest of the cell would work.

What about a different approach completely? Leave the sex organs intact, just change the outward appearance and sensitivity. The parasite doesn't dissolve those parts, and it lets normal human reproduction take place. Just have the parasite half reproduce asexually, and put it's new asexually created parasite into the mother's womb somewhere in the second trimester when the baby is mostly developed, and have the new parasite combine with the baby before it's even born. Maybe it injects a bunch and the one that attaches to the baby becomes a mermaid while the rest are born as normal parasites.

If it's a merman, just leave his sperm alone. He can impregnate a normal woman and she can have a normal human baby with no side effects. Or maybe his cum also has tiny parasites which grow with the baby, much like with a woman, so the baby is born a full blown mermaid.

Nah. Any decent parasite improves its survivability and reproduction rate when it acquires a host, else the whole paradigm is moot.

a small comment. i recommend making the fish tail proportionally larger compared to the girl. that way it gives the illusion of wider hips and longer legs. remember that zoe's legs need to fit inside the fish
