I don't understand this complaint. Criticism is perfectly allowed. I've only ever seen people get punished for being rude and nonconstructive (telling someone to stop drawing gay shit) and for not writing in English. I'm sure there are examples of mods being fags, but mods are always fags and I've never noticed them. If you're only looking at the site favorites like cc and alt_cor then you see a bunch of comments from people who feel they know each other and are all chummy, so of course it's not going to center around hardcore critique. If most shitty artists don't get criticized, it's because they don't get a lot of views or comments to begin with.

Pixiv and deviantart are exactly the same, yet some artists manage to improve, because while criticism can be helpful it's ultimately much more important to practice and study technique and a lot of deviantart tier shitters on aotk are never going to do that no matter what. Understand, it's up to the artist to improve himself and some don't have the time or talent to actually be good. Take a look at Andrew Dobson of lolcow fame. Years of artschool and he gets more criticism than anyone you know, yet his art has been actively degrading for years.

Not really a stupid question, though I probably have a stupid reason: I absolutely loathe Python. Also, making a VN engine is ridiculously easy. (The tricky part is making it nice to use.)

That said, using Electron was a suggestion made a few threads back; I've never actually made anything with it before--though it seems pretty well-suited. Teaching Feeling was made with NW.js, which is pretty much the same thing as Electron. (Actually, running my own NW binary was how I got that running in Linux without the likes of Wine when I tried it out.)

Phyton is the programming language you use with RenPy.
Electron and NW.js are frameworks for making desktop applications with Node.js.
A framework is basically a software toolkit for doing something.
Node.js is a way to run JavaScript outside of a web browser.
JavaScript is the programming language built into web browsers. (JavaScript is not related to Java either, which is that thing that asks you to update it every other day)
Linux is an operating system like Windows or Mac.
...and Wine is a way to run Windows programs on Linux, Windows programs like most of the projects that get posted here.

Basically, what I said was that I don't like using the language RenPy uses, and am pretty OK with building a VN using a toolkit that uses a language I do like--and noted that Teaching Feeling also uses a similar toolkit. (If that kind of makes sense?)

I can see the appeal of Python, I just personally have a strong distaste for it. It tries really hard to force you to use an imperative style that I just don't find fun to write.

A good example is how much of a pain Python lambdas are compared to the ability to chain together beautiful functional pipelines in JavaScript on a whim. There's no reason for Python to be gimped like that besides limiting the non-painful ways you can solve problems.

Actually, high order programming in general is a huge deal for me, that's why I like Ruby and Lisp; and the way that Python completely butchers it is enough for me to loathe the language.

Though, as for the language itself, JavaScript is actually pretty badass if you learn it. Code written in functional style is very easy to test and very hard to write bugs into, and high-order programming means that you can make beautifully terse and readable code when dealing with collections of things. Yes, and this is the main reason I have biases against it and prefer JavaScript to it. Functional is my jam.

Also, most imperative languages have some functional bits to them--even Java, the poster-child for imperative OOP, can be functional with its gnarly new streams and generics... Dare I say, it actually makes Java kind of nice to write in these days. (Yes I know C# has had this sort of thing with LINQ since forever)

OOP structuring and polymorphism with small testable functional components is absolutely fantastic. This is actually what Common Lisp does, which has this stupid-powerful class system and some neat functional functionality that you can combine. (Maybe that's where I acquired that taste?)

i don't have a lot of experience writing fetish stuff specifically (i'm actually in this thread brushing up so i can write a spanking fanfic) but i think that a basic plot format should work! if your main theme is sexual awakening, or realization that your character likes spanking, have them encounter it gradually.

so say the first time they see spanking in a sexual context, they're shocked/confused (how can someone like that? etc), but it sticks for them

and for your rising action, you take it from shock to curiosity, from curiosity to interest, and from interest, making it a reality for them, having them ask someone to spank them or saying yes to someone else.

a lot of it depends on what overlap you have with other themes. if your character's a virgin, then having their sexual awakening happen simultaneously would be interesting. if the characters get into a d/s relationship, then their dynamic is going to change to reflect that in addition to the spanking revelations

though if you want the story to be about nonconsensual spanking, a lot of this is kind of irrelevant?

tl;dr, try to mold your themes to a blank plot outline (exposition, rising actions, climax, resolution)

The strength of proxy battle games is in variety. I, too, wrote a thing.

It had fancy AI, pretty thorough scripting, complete customizability, was cross-platform, and had some pretty elaborate features (Like being able to hide from NPCs, pants tripping you when they were down, etc...).

It was largely ignored. I imagine partially because nobody wanted another text engine, and partially because of the language it was written in.
