Well, In the case of the "Who Goes There-John Carpenter-The Thing From Another World" The Thing, that's a question that different stories handle differently. Sometimes they don't know, and either come to love the Thing and rejecting their humanity or commit suicide trying to destroy the Thing for good.

Or they do know and in those cases when we see from its perspective it's usually feeling pity, and wants to help people by absorbing them.

But I'd say it's kind of a moot point as the best Thing stories don't show us the Things perspective at all. Not that they can't, but usually the mystery goes hand in hand with the best stories.
