I know that fetish conventions are different from anime/game/etc. conventions, but as far as the 'critical mass' goes, that never exists. Speaking from experience, no Con springs up overnight out of a vacuum, they take a few years to develope. It's always a process of (a)hold a con in a small venue, probably a comparatively few people come, hope they have a good time and spread the word, (b) each progressive year, assuming you didn't fail, more people come and it turns into a respectable event.

I don't know about AnimeExpo, the biggest anime con in the country (but more commercial), but Otakon (the second biggest and far more fan run/oriented) started as like 100-200 people in some rooms on a college campus, which is how most of the big cons today started.

Sure, the idea of building it up from a smaller event is what I was getting at.

The issue is that I'm not sure they can even reach the 100-200 people number (which is the target they're going for on their Kickstarter) currently. As it stands, the core-member keen-beans have already bought their tickets ... and the Kickstarter is sitting at only 42 backers. Keep in mind that some fraction of these backers will only be in it for the exclusive artwork that comes with the ticket (and I've also seen a few people say they've donated, despite not being able to actually attend).

That is to say, currently, it looks like they've only got their NYC meetup regulars, and then some. Can we really expect another >100-150 people to come out of the woodwork to sign up in the next few weeks? I'm not so sure. I could easily imagine a few high-fliers donating large sums to push the Kickstarter over the goal, but at this stage, I can't imagine they'll get the sort of numbers they hoped for.

This is why I think it would have been a better idea to grow it up from the meetups. Start with the small ~dozen or so core members, and entice new folks from there. Maybe organize some different types of meetups (regular meetup + movie, regular meetup + lunch/bar, etc); invite a local artist or two to come and give a talk on occasion (and maybe record the talk for everyone else too?); record some of the round-table discussions they have and post them online to kick of a larger discussion and show exactly what gets discussed at these kinds of events; or things like that. Add some extra "value" to the meetups on occasion, and use that to grow it.

Given that by far the largest concern people are raising about this is "but wont it be comprised of autist creeps?", I think it would have helped a LOT to show the larger community that the event this is sprung from seems to be well grounded. Is the larger community even aware of these meetups?

I guess it's a matter of perspective. Everyone laughs at the furries, but we're mature enough to know that, generally speaking, the majority of the furry community is probably fine. The same seems to be true for the size community.

The upshot of more publicity - even negative publicity - is that you reach people who didn't realise they have a size kink. As hated as the furries are, and despite the fact that 99% of the art that is produced by the community is shit, they still have a much greater number of good, talented artists producing regular work.

I don't really mind if size fetish stuff gets dragged through the mud - it's something I only participate in online, it's not like people will start making fun of me IRL because of it. But it could also have some positive side effects ... maybe?
