stuff I'd like to do

1. The ability to be gay as a male or female. Like you can end the game in a relationship with a man or a woman. And I'd like for some of those choices to be dependent on the gender you choose. Like have NPC that will only have a gay relationship. Not some love will find a way crap.

I'd also like to avoid love will find a way relationships. If you stay a girl, some relationships will be closed to you. The girl that liked you yesterday will not date you.

The ability to be a tomboy girl or an effeminate boy by the end. I don't want to force stereotypes. None of this to progress as a girl you have to become a girly girl. I'd like for the player to have the option to hate all the princess crap while for some reason, being female feels right and they stay that way.

It seems like you have some rough ideas on what you want to do with the game, but I haven't seen any discussion on actual mechanics. Do you want this to be a visual novel focusing exclusively on story and decisions, or did you also want to add in some gameplay?

I both liked and disliked Long Live the Queen. The various paths you could take your princess down were interesting. But in the end, most of the branches resulted in unpredictable and arbitrary death. Meanwhile actually beating the game was a very linear effort because of the binary pass/fail mechanic.

Something I'd like to see in a game about princesses is the ability to specialize your type of ruler. Like if you wanted a princess who was excellent at tactics and combat, you could end up with a more militaristic kingdom as a result.

I approve of keeping gender expression separate from sex, and both of those separate of sexuality. But I also think it would be appropriate to have push-back from the king, queen, advisers, etc. if you strayed too far from the more "traditional" path.


There's also other things to consider like if you as a princess now have to quarrel over a brother or male cousin for right to the throne. Regardless of what direction you take it, good luck, and I'd love to hear more about it.

Right now I'm trying to decide on the mechanism for the gender change.

Is it a curse that happens early on in the game and most of the conflict in the game is your quest to change back and or stop an apposing force.

Or make it like a magic girl anime where you switch into a girl to use magic as a consequence of an item, but the more you use it, the more permanent the gender becomes.

The big problem is the relationships. I'd like to use the gender swap to discover gay partners. But you'll need to actually switch back to progress man on man relationships.

Though I suppose you could use some sort of battle system that levels physical aspects. Like say if you only use the item for physical strength, other than having a vagina your body changes little. So you could bind and court the gay men as a man. But to get a good end you have to find a cure by the end, otherwise they will discover your deception.

Two points I'd like to make with the game is that life is not perfect and unlike a dating sim you can't date everyone. And that society treats different behavior and gender differently. Like if you cheat the game and become a super hot woman early in the game without securing power and allies, the game is pretty much over and you spend the rest of the game courting and doing nothing.

what is going to piss people off more?

A text adventure like Long Live the Queen or a jrpg?

I'm trying to make this manageable so it might actually get made. I know people are probably reading all this stuff and thinking of something that looks like skyrim, but I don't know how doable that is for 1 guy.

With the Long Live the Queen game play I just need an artist for backgrounds and characters.

With a jrpg in something like rpg maker I can add fights and use tile templates to make much bigger levels. I will still need to pay a second person to make art for faces and cut scenes.

which would you hate the least? a visual novel or a jrpg?

I'd much rather the visual novel. I didn't even care for top down tiled rpgs even in the days of super Nintendo when that was the latest and greatest.
As for feminization the choices option would probably be a more satisfying. If you're going the magic side effect route having variation where some magics make you more feminine and others masculine would probably be better. Otherwise most players would just indiscriminately magic through every situation and find a desirable outcome disappointingly easy.

Also from having read a few development stories from visual novels I can assure this is not a one guy job and probably not 2 either.

That is another reason to keep it clean. I have some gay friends and female friends irl that I could get help from. One is a gay man with a masters in English lit. Another is a girl with a masters in clinical psychology.

I think they'd jump at the chance to write clean love stories between men/me, women/women, writing real body disphoria, etc.

Which is good. Because we're lacking that.

To be honest, I'm leaning towards jrpg because that would allow a lot more mileage per asset. Like I could commission a series of reaction faces for each character, then write as many things I want and just reuse the reaction faces.

With a visual novel I'm going to have to pay out for every scene we do. Sure you can reuse some reaction faces, but to make it really good each event needs a few special images. Otherwise the game gets repetitive.

Like, lets say its a magic item causing the gender problems. You're using it becuase it gives you magic and strength and you need that to achieve a greater goal. Like maybe you need to go to the top of a forbidden mountain or castle to get a cure for your mother who is deathly ill.

If you just use the item to Heal, your genitals shrink up and you develop a function vagina. Very few changes. You're essentially a flat tomboy. You can either play that up and be a cute flat girl, or hide it preserve your male identity and pursue straight girls or gay men.

If you use the item for healing and magical attacks, you slowly become a busty sorceress

By the second half of the game you will be able to keep the item and complete your transformation, replace the item with another that cures you, or keep both and become an amazonian futa. Whichever choice you take impacts what final missions you can take and how easy you can defeat certain monsters and bosses. Like if you become a sorceresses you can plow through an area with magic weak monsters. If you go back to being a man, you lose your magic and have to grind to get strong enough to pass the area.

Its kind of rare in jrpgs to have the story and mechanics work together so tightly. Normally you have a battle engine that you abuse and just plow through the game with.

Ah I just remembered where I've seen this before. Corruption of Champions. There's another one or two similar games on Fenoxo's site. It's got the gender screwery you're describing plus various furry and monster girl changes you can make to your character. Give those a try before you take such an approach or people might say you're imitating something you've never even played.

I think you can do both.

Like if you really want to stay a guy, you can have text options that show a lot of disphoria.

And you can swing the other way, and show a deep sense of relief and joy at the girl choices if you want to play the character as hating being a guy before the transformation.

I plan to be more focused. No furries. Plot isn't driven by setting up sex scenes. A lot more slice of life and dealing with your choices and changes than jumping from one sex act to the next.

Hell, there will probably be a lot less sex.

I think people take for granted how much the transformation is the turn on, not necessarily the fucking.

First of all, the idea that Tsunade couldn't just ninja-surgery Naruto back into a guy if he wanted to, and that Jiraiya and/or Sarutobi wouldn't get her to do it if it happened before she became Hokage, seems kind of far-fetched. Thus, Naruto *doesn't* want to be turned back.

Assuming it happens during the series, then in the short-term, Naruto stays in mission-mode and doesn't hook up with anybody. In the long term, it's up in the air.

I don't think that neither Sasuke/Satsuki domming Naruto/ko, nor vice verse would be good.

The essence of the relationship between those two is rivalry. And you can only be a rival with someone who is your equal, or at least close to it. Having one of them "win" and turn the other into his/her bitch ruins their dynamic. Not to mention that it's completely OOC for either Sasuke or Naruto to ever become meek.

If the two of them form a sexual relationship, it would be a very competitive one. I see the two of them start by sparring until they're both fired up and then trying to fuck each other into the ground. There would be hair pulled, backs clawed, nipples twisted, and clothing ripped. The fucking would transition back into fighting and back into fucking until the all distinction is lost. It would end with the two ragged and exhausted, and whatever unfortunate room or training ground was witness to their coupling completely obliterated.

Tender moments between them would be comparatively rare, but all the sweeter for it.
Personally I like futaNaruko/femSatsuki the most, but other combinations can be good too, in the hands of a good writer. Both of them using TF jutsus to try out various combinations is good too.

Why not just set up a world where your prince is one of many taking place in a great suitor war for the hand of a princess of a powerful kingdom (whether you are choosing to do this or being forced by your father could alter the story from the get go).

During the suitor war, an unknown rival changes your prince (and maybe a few others) into a princess to help "clear" the field. As for changing back, your kingdom isn't without magic, and eventually you are given an amulet that will let you switch back and forth. However, if you do not keep up your princess guise, you may not be able to find out who caused the magic dickery and you might fail to stop them from causing future harm to the kingdoms.

Does anyone else not like it when the TG is about an established character link Link, Ash or Naruto? I just can't get into it with those.

So I remember this story that I read probably like 6 years ago about a guy who goes to a house (I think he was some kind of lawyer or something and the owner just died so he was getting paperwork), gets trapped in the basement, and is slowly feminized into a slutty woman by the machines that the dead guy made.

Having a little game dev experience myself, I have to say that most of making a game is producing art assets. As you mentioned that's super important in a visual novel, and I would say it's just as important in an rpg, especially with such a heavy story focus as yours. The rpg doesn't strictly need the same attention to art as the visual novel, but it would improve the game tremendously if it had the same quality of talking scenes.

And 'Art assets' doesn't just mean pictures, just writing the story is Art, even more so when on the scale of a visual novel or story based rpg.

Your should start by layout out the story line, not writing everything, just a rough outline. Branching paths, major decision points, characters. That will really help get it moving, and make deciding on the mechanics a lot easier.

If the root cause of the change is magic use related, have the changes occur at specific story points. Rather than from any magic use. It will make planning the story/plot a lot easier. And make the game easier to code. If it is also rpg based, how about having the player choose to level up in either of two separate classes/jobs? The fighting & testosterone heavy class, or the more magical & feminine class. (there could even be more options beyond just Fighter/Mage). You can even minimize grinding, and the like, by having the level ups come at specific times driven by the plot. Rather than specifically XP. Using time skips in the story can help this feel less blatant, and can help relationships progress naturally.

Lastly there are quite a few options these days for game engine so don't feel like rpgmaker is your only choice. You might have to learn a little code but GameMaker and Unity are free and not that hard to use.

What a game like this desperately needs:
an understanding of the distinction between biological sex and actual gender. Include options for staying a woman even though you consider yourself to be male. Include options for turning yourself back into a man even though you consider yourself to be female.

I've thought about this.

I would like to have the initial gender change be connected to a cursed item. But on the bright side, the item gives stats boost and powers.

If the MP never uses it past the first curse, they will keep a small dick and vagina and can pass as a male. They can use that to start gay relationships, but will not be able to complete them until the end of the game,because they are afraid of being seen as a freak or impostor.

If you use the item to heel you will just become skinny or shrink. You'll be able to pass as wafe of a girl or a twink of a guy. This will allow some relationships, but relationships that require a buff dude or a sexy woman will be locked away.

Stronger magic will of course tick up all female characteristics. Like if you rush through an entire area with powerful fire or dark magic, your breasts grow, Eventually they will get so big you will no longer be able to progress man on man relationships or hetero female relationships.

The flipside of that is you will be able to play the game without using any magic and stay mostly male. But it will be harder.

There will probably be other serious issues that will pull you to go toward's your interest. So you might want to stay male, but you won't be able to save npc or achieve something without using the more powerful magic.

So there will definitely be a path where you embrace the curse to get the job at hand done, while not seeing yourself as the gender you end up as.

There will also probably be an ending where you take the cure despite being female for some greater good.

I've actually had the spark of an idea for something similar to the game idea discussed here, though my version would be more of a monstergirl transformation rather than just turning female. Using the transformative power source not only makes men less physically masculine over time, but it also turns users somewhat more monstrous and less human; this way, there could be females who use the power and still have something of a price to pay.

The part I wanted to share, though, was the idea of a villain or rival who uses the power freely, almost mindlessly, without regard to the consequences so long as he can use the granted power to achieve his goals. While the player character can use this power as frequently or infrequently as he chooses, this rival/antagonist would always be at the maximum possible transformation for that point, to show the player the extent of the power's consequences. Eventually, there would be a confrontation; in the rival's case, you could choose to recruit "him" upon your victory and get a powerful monstergirl ally, with perhaps a possibility for some awkward romance (especially if you're not exactly male anymore, yourself).

This idea was designed with more of an RPG execution in mind, as well as the power source being usable by people other than the player, so it might not work for this game if it doesn't go that route, but I figured it might be useful anyway.
