It is/was a very good and extremely popular manga, and it just so happens to have TG as one of its central premises. (It's literally in the title, in a cheeky way.), that's basically all there is to it.

Shitloads of people have read it and enjoyed it, some of them probably figured out that they're into the whole "He's a boy, but wait, now he's a girl!" element, other people probably drifted towards the manga specifically because of that. Ranma is one of the first instances where TG is used in a mainstream manga/anime without it being used exclusively as a throwaway joke and/or major drama (there were a few before it using it but the guy-turned-girl would instantly be hypergirlish and demure "because of what the body dictates").

Ranma was somewhat groundbreaking in that whenever he became a girl he would still have his own personality and try to fight with the same spirit that "she" approached fights and daily life while in the male body, minus the obvious barriers set by it being weaker and having different weakspots.

That's what made it significant at the time.
It was unusual for guy-turned-girl to behave "tomboyishly" or to only dress in a "female manner" for their personal advantadge or "only" because the official competition uniform dictated what was to be worn (see the fight in leotard or the ice-skating one).

Ranma (especially in the manga) only dresses girlishly when:
a.) she is required to by some pre-established rules
b.) wants to piss off her female suitors (especially Akane) to show she can be better at being a girl than they are
c.) she wants to take advantadge of how her female body (by dressing up nicely to get free meals/nights out/etc from random male strangers)

And yet despite this he claims would give all of that up in an instant to have a "normal male life".
The author has been in record to have said that the way she wrote Ranma he considers the times as a girl as "crossdressing". If he isn't going to have a say on if he is to be turned into a girl or not he'll make the most of it and own it up and use it to his advantadge rather than let it dictate his life in a manner that he dislikes.

Well, I enjoyed it. The angels vs demons thing eventually went into a lot of detail, including a lot of background information and some neat twists, and was pretty much the main driver of the plot by the end.

The transformation content and the main character dealing with the changes was also a big part of the story, some mental changes, but nothing excessive or unwarranted.

Oh fuck yes I dig this like the Eliza route in Press Switch. Shame the twin route isn't quite done yet since it seems like it needs like another day or two to end it.

There is also potential in that Sayaka route. It's like the April route in press switch, but cloning instead of body swap with a ton more content.

Pauline saved this game, if I'm honest. I was really bored up until I got to her sequence. Her nature as a lesbian, a stalker, AND a nerd made her the most fleshed out among the entire cast - and the implications after the transformation are great - such as the twins planning to stalk Asaji after they finish stalking their teacher. I'd read an entire story about her antics.

Yeah most of the current content is John being gender bent and the twin stuff. There are others routes too that have some open options, but not too fleshed out yet. Sayaka route is similar to twins route where you got twinned/gradual MCing into the alpha bitch thanks to her sidekick lackey, but not too much content on that yet.

There are a lot of teases involving shenanigans with the older women like the teacher in pic related where one of the options for her is a currently unavailable cloning,

Unlikely. Game just came out and people just barely listed the current ending conditions on the forum. Compared to PS it feels less linear [more available branch choices where they can vary in effect] despite less content currently.

I felt this way too. I think this is because the paths are shorter with more choices.

Some of the PS paths are really long, and only have one route fleshed out (the Mom path is a good example that springs to mind), so you don't feel like you have much control.

Student Transfer fixes this problem by having shorter, sweeter paths with more choices that actually effect the outcome.

Overall I'm very impressed with this as an intial release, and the fact that it's open-source and collaborative rather than closed-source and a one-man-show, means it has a much brighter future than Press Switch.

The mom path, really? If I had to name a fleshed out route in PS it would be the one where the MC switches around with two girls and they keep doing things like that for a while. It has many possible outcomes.

That one or the one where the MC and the readheaded girl, ashley I think, end up being in a relationship and are suddenly swapped between each other a few months down the line.

The one where Calvin switches with the two girls is long too, but it's one of the more varied since there are at least a few path differences involved with even endings in it. PS has more content currently, but it feels there is less variety involved.

Genderswap is the best one, I hope more of that comes up. the twins route was also great and i liked the scene where the mc becomes the delinquent. The problem with cloning is that you can't live their life if they're still around so having the girl turn into him was good for the prissy bitch path. I'd love it if the twins part involved him getting a crush on himself. really any route that gives the MC the doki-dokis would be great
