A long, long time.

The problem is the actuators - that's what's really holding robotics back. There's no motor known which is anywhere near as light, quiet, efficient, precise, fast, and compact as biological muscle.

And without the right actuators, we can't build robots that good. That's why we're still limited to stuff like ASIMO and factory robots.

That's an active field of research, yes. Most artificial muscles (in the electroactive / thermoactive range) are both slow and imprecise currently, and pneumatic muscles are bulky and require an onboard pneumatic system.

Still, artificial muscles are a very active area of research right now.

Not quite right. Electroactive muscles are fast, precise, and compact - but they're also very weak. Thermoactive muscles are very strong, but they're slow and difficult to control and get hot. And pneumatic muscles are bulky and difficult to control and need an air compressor.

I think the three biggest areas are the actuators, the power supply, and the actual brains.

once car manufacturers get rechargeable batteries down, we would have a better idea of what could be done with a humanoid power supply. assuming no vastly new tech is invented.

after that, we need a computer that will control the hundreds of actuators, organize and use a constant input of data from senses, and make decisions with all that without freaking out and killing someone. oh, and that computer has to fit inside a human shaped robot, not a room.

then agian... the computer could take up a room, and just use the robot as a remote avatar over wi-fi...
