Not at all unhappy with what we've seen of her character so far but there's a certain point where you wonder who the real heroine should have been. Show takes a while to make it fully obvious what Star's complete personality is.

It's easy to watch the first and think she;s lolsorandom but then further episodes add more layers to her character. Then the next season starts really putting her to the test and giving her an actually really complex characterization.

That's not to say the first episode is inaccurate or that Star's 100% different later, but it really only shows one side of her because it is a fairly stock cartoon plot to start off the show.

I think the show would have done well to include tertiary characters for a line or two to help flesh out scenes a bit. A lot of the one off characters in season 1 and 2 who filled a similar role just weren't that interesting.

That being said, I wouldn't want the majority of those minor characters to get any more than that, they weren't particularly interesting and some were just annoying like Alfonso. The ideal outcome in my mind is using actually interesting secondary characters more often but with less focus in episodes, fleshes them and the world out a bit without forcing boring characters to take up screen time from the main cast.

Yeah that's my feelings as well, I'd rather see a little more of the secondaries in a way that doesn't make them the entire focus of the episode. The MHC were handled well in that regard though, establish their character and their importance to the Star vs. world then have them beaten down by the big bad, simple but effective.

That approach is fine once in a while, such as Mr Candle Cares and Girls Day Out, where the main cast is effectively tied in with the secondary character in focus. But too much of it can be a bit grating. One-time character episodes are okay too, but it pays to have established characters present to easily play off of or have their introduction directly tied in with the main plot of the episode so you cover both in reasonable time.

I don't think that's the worst idea in the world, all things considered. I think there's a value in seeing Star interact with a wider range of 'normal' Earth characters to develop that whole magical princess comes to earth plot line that's pretty prominent in the show. A large number of Star's interactions with her female peers are still with her magical friends. It could have been nice to just see little tidbits of her interacting with non-magic girls. Still, I'd rather they avoided such an idea entirely than do it poorly, which is a possibility given the inconsistent use of secondary or tertiary characters.

I guess it's more like the fact that only Brittney is even semi-memorable among them, and even she never worked well in the show due to being a relic of the pre-show days when Star was a loser who could actually realistically be antagonized by a popular girl. There was maybe something there with Brittney being jealous and Star being oblivious, but it could be too easy to make it seem like her world revolves around hating Star. Also Season 1 already had enough of Star being great and 2 was more about her getting dragged through the mud; not sure if it would've ever fit anywhere.

I just don't think there's much that can be done with the other background cheerleaders who exist only to be cheerleaders. Plus even /co/ only ever focused on Sabrina and Chantelle instead of the black girl or the guys (who had names too but you wouldn't know it). I just don't feel like they would've added anything the way even Brittney would.

Though to be real, the huge amount of repetitive posts/avatarfagging here featuring said school background characters (read: girls) has made me sick of all of them but Jackie and Janna and I guess StarFan13. I think what could have fit was the inclusion of Star interacting with people in a non-dimension hopping adventure way. It wouldn't have even had to have been a prominent feature to focus on, just something of note that the audience is shown here and there. Have it lead into another scene or have her occupied with it as a setup for a Marco episode. That includes the people she'd likely be interacting with in that scenario, they don't need much focus at all, just a line or two for a little development flavour of the Earth side of the show.

But, again, I'd rather they didn't do it then do it poorly. There's already a bunch of secondary characters who need some more development, be it major or minor, Jackie being at the forefront of that.

It's also slightly odd that Marco doesn't really have someone his age to bounce off of, his most prominent Earth interactions outside of Star's friends comes from Sensei and Jeremy of all people. I wonder if Tom would have filled that role more, after there episodes together? I'd hate to think that was the plan but his voice actor was a bit too costly.

Do you guys think the fact that Star likes older guys in the show is a sign any of us here at /co/ have a good chance to be with her?

Given that Star has only dipped down in "serious" situations (S1 finale, when she's trying to rescue Glossaryck and pushes through the portal), the fact that she dipped down when Marco was about to discover what she thought of him hints at something big.

I can see that; it's more like the school setting is maybe slightly overused as it is despite there not being many "school" episodes (just lots of scenes there) and so I'm okay with not seeing it much. Marco's parents could've maybe actually filled that role since they have more personality when you think about you don't see them much-- but then I also like that there's not a ton of parental involvement. Fits well with the themes of growing independence and all, and sort of adds almost a darker level to certain elements those few times they remind you the Diazes are barely aware of what Star and Marco get up to. I'm just not sure what kind of character(s) it would take for that to really work; feels like it'd require someone we haven't seen.

I actually wonder now if Sensei is supposed to be so prominent now to almost emphasize Marco not having a ton of Earth friends besides Star/Jackie/possibly Janna. Tom does seem like he's supposed to be a friend/ally but there hasn't been much of him.

I think it's a definite that we'll see Tom interact more with Marco in the future though; it's just Season 2 had a lot of bases to cover and maybe couldn't find a place for him in the second half of the season that wouldn't distract from other stuff (VA could be a factor too but I don't think it's the main one, though I'm just guessing). They did a much better job at spacing the plot out through the season than S1 did, but it felt like most of Star and Marco's friends had the most prominence in the episodes just before mid-season and then only showed up occasionally after that.
