I always loved the Decepticons as a kid, Megatron and Starscream in particular. They had all the charm. I felt like they were what made the show entertaining to watch, and that they had more agency. Whereas the good guys felt like they were only there to make sure the bad guys didn't succeed. So I was more invested in what Megatron was trying to do than finding out how the Autobots inevitably stop him.

Autobots were okay too, though. I recall that the Dinobots were the best toys, and they were my favorite Autobots after Optimus.

Is it weird that Starscream is my favorite transformer and I thought his death in Transformers the movie was awesome? I remember being so shocked at first when he disintegrated, but not very upset. It was the second best part after Optimus vs. Megatron.

The live-action movies desperately need scenes of this quality.

I realized I was a weird little kid the day I realized the reason I liked the decepticons better was because they were more attractive overall.

Consider the following:

>By comparison, even at the very start, we had an enormous cast of Autobots, so even if we did take a shine to a particular character, they most likely had maybe one or two episodes which showcased them, and were lost in the shuffle. How is a kid supposed to form a real attachment to anyone in the group when they know they'll hardly ever get to see them do anything?

That's why I liked the Decepticons more.

Imagine if the first season Autobots had been a small team consisting of just [whoever your favorite 5-6 '84 bots were], so that you got to get your fill of them.

For me, personally, I would be a huge Autobot fan if the original show had given me more Jazz, Cliffjumper and the lambros

It's been about two and a quarter decades since I watched G1 but if I were to guess, I'd say the Autobots with the most screen time were Optimus Prime, Bumblebee, Wheeljack and the Dinobots. Optimus Prime was the main character, Bumblebee was the loveable little underdog and got paired with the humans a lot, Wheeljack was the one who made all the gadgets and science and the Dinobots were popular and got to be the star of a lot of episodes.

After that I remember Ratchet and Ironhide being around, maybe Jazz. The rest like Hound and Brawn felt like they were just background characters most of the time.

If I remember correctly, that's exactly what happened.
Japan had a ton of "transforming vehicle" toylines.
I don't remember who struck on the idea of marketting it in America first, but Hasbro and Tonka both decided to give it a go.
IIRC, technically Go-Bots made it to the market first, but Hasbro managed to get a better cartoon, and superior toys, so they won.

What always gets to me is the way Transfags treat the Go-Bots franchise and it's fans (assuming those even exist anymore).
It's like...their franchise won, yet they continue, to this day, to shit all over Go-Bots. It's like they have this weird obsession with lording superiority over someone.

Like, you don't see that with other cartoons from the period (at least I never have.)
He-Man and Thundercats fans don't have a cock waving contest over who is better. No, they get a crossover.

Well a lot of Transformers fans are pretty legitimately autistic, so it could have something to do with it.

Personally having never seen it before, I think GoBots is great and I'm happy to have discovered it. It seems like the Mazinger Z to Transfomers' Gundam 0079. Sure it's not quite as polished or serious, but it's fun in a different way.

Strange question for you guys: What Alt modes would you give your favorite Decepticons and Autobots in a new TF series/toyline? (no need to even necessarily limit yourself to present-day vehicles)

I mean, as mentioned, between an overswollen roster, and especially kind of predictable/unvaried alt-modes, I feel like at least a few of the classic Autobots could stand to be a plane or even a Helicopter.

I mean, just imagine Rachet as a medical service helicopter or even a full on 'Medical EVAC' Jet-powered Osprey (if we want to get bleeding edge)

Would it be a good idea to make any of them triple-changers? While the "whether or not" it's a good idea to change the looks depends on if it's an improvement or not (that means the Michael Bay movies right there which was "not") any production team making changes would get away with almost whatever they want. There's been changes, there's been successes, there's been failures, there's been a lot of close enough. Quality wins out. And yes, the GoBots cartoon was terrible, but then so was TF Energon.

Hey, I as I said "no need to limit yourself" in my own post.

I do think it would sort of depend on how well it works for the character or how you make the character work with it.

For example, I could see Megatron as a valid triple-changer. I mean Megatron is supposed to be an absolute beast of a Cybertronian and by all rights and specs outmatch Optimus in every day. But unfortunately for Megs, Optimus is basically Cybertron Captain America. (the bay movies even made him Hail Hydra)

Depends on tastes, but he seems to feel like successful for the "can kick everyone else's butts" feeling while not being a complete nutjob or overly dependent on others for his altmode. Even his altmode feels powerful, but not as fast as say Starscream so their dynamic feels accurate. Liked Autobots, I now prefer decepticons because they have the coolest transformers

Like I get it, decepticons were already designed to be war machines, where as the autobots were normal robots who had to become warriors, but when it comes down to it I feel decepticons have a lot more iconic characters and designs. Shockwave is my favorite among them all.

They sort of have been slowly in the comics. For example Cy-kill shows up in Megatron Origin as a punching bag for Megatron in a gladiator-style battle arena. Like a few others mentioned, Bandai own the likenesses for the majority of the original Machine Robo Gobots, Hasbro just has the name. Hasbro did reference some Gobots in some of the toylines though like Movie 1 Fracture and ROTF Deadlift.

Alternatively, there's this japanese company Action Toys that's licensing the rights to make Machine Robo figures with modern articulation (At a ~$40 price range per figure though)

You know what? I'd love to see a new Beast Wars that is part of the Aligned Continuity.

If they ever did something like that, then I'd like to see some of the elements from Beast Wars Uprising in it. Including Uprising Transmutate (even if she's a redeco of Prime Arcee).

The thing is, as much as I love BW, I don't know that it would work right now. Transformers sells fine and we aren't in an age where talking animals are the end all be all of a successful toy franchise as it once was
