That's something I was noticing when I was watching it last night.
Thw characters are ugly and unappealing, but the backgrounds and sets are phenomenal. The flowers from the scene where the Koala goes to Nana's house were, at times, photo realistic.

Same issue I have with Despicable Me.
Illumination should stop applying their minion design principals to literally every character they make.
