Tatsu was the best mom. Outsiders was defined by me from the start in that if Batman hadn't enforced a no-kill rule she'd have solved their very first case almost immediately, and way quicker than Bats himself.

House style limits it but that gas fight was rad. Tatsu's swings from edgy vengeful sword wife to caring team mom were great.

She really is. And yeah, that swing between strict but tender care and sword-slashing REVENGEEE fun was pretty great. Melodramatic as fug, but great. Real "Heart of the series" stuff. Shame that basically nobody has picked it up again ever since and Katana's been quickly eroded into Swordchick McJapan.

It's also something I love about 80s writers like Barr and Grell and O'Neil in his Question run: they could have characters who killed, in situations of combat or when faced with particularly nasty villains, and still treat them like human beings rather than ticking bombs six months away from putting on a goofy hat and declaring themselves Emperor of the World. Tho' it's funny how even then Barr caught flak in the readers mail about how Batman would go "Ok Tatsu I really wish you didn't but if a motherfucker steps out of place you can cut him in his goddamn face."

Ann Nocenti's run was kinnnda like that, but mucked things up with a lot of different weapons clan and some kind of weird intrigue and it was all just a bit too scattershot. But yeah, Katana to me needs a story or a substory that doesn't revolve around shanking dudes. That's what made the Halo and Tatsu subplot so good for me: it was about two people with extremely weird lives trying to build a normal one together. Plus, seeing Tatsu genuinely and deeply care about something is what kept her from being a full edgelord.

Well, it wasn't that. It was building up an entire plot of Batman going after Brother Eye and Aliens from that 90s event on the Outsiders. Then bringing back Stephanie as DC demanded. Then going on to start doing subplots with another Stephanie-lite gal, two corrupt cops, and start mending the Steph/Tim relationship. T

Then you get told Batman R.I.P. is happening.

Well, he was brought back, and he got approval/was told to bring Steph back. It's not completely clear what that process was. But recently, he was frustrated with the way they had him bring her back.

And ugh, Gotham Underground was such a disposable mess. Tieri is the king of last minute writer substitutions.
