What does /co/ think about Heavy Metal magazine/The Heavy Metal movie?
I liked the first movie, Heavy Metal 2000 wasn't as good but I still watched it a few times, and most of the time I like the stuff from the Magazine that ends up here.
How the hell did they slip by the Comics Code?

Heavy Metal is badass, op. But fuck you for reminding me that the comic/cartoon industry is dying a slow painful death.

I love the movie. I love Moebius, I love hard sci-fi and erotica, and I think that Heavy Metal and 2000ad are probably some of the best chances we have of showcasing the newest and most out there ideas that comics can express.
So why haven't they been doing it, /co/? I got super hyped when I heard Morrison was going to be Editor in Chief, but nothing's really improved. There's less tits, but no more mature sense of erotica to replace it, even the "Love" and "Sex" specials raised few interesting alternatives to exploitative or lowbrow sexiness. I love Bisleyesque guns and boobs as much as the next guy, but I think we can do more with it.
The sci-fi's been lackluster as well, with a few notable exceptions like Zentropa, and even the Cyberzerker. Nothing really exploring any big ideas, no big story as a drawing point. Taarna's been in it, I guess, which is a neat throwback to the fans of the movie, but was she ever that big of thing in the comics?
How do we fix indie sci-fi anthologies?

2000 was fun but not good. The music was fantastic though
>>94484010
/co/ should be checking out the magazine more now. they are missing out on some fantastic stuff now that Morrison took over
>Morrison stories
>Donny Cates
>Enki
>no more porn adds
>More stories than before
>crazy Morrison editor columns
It's the best it's been in a long ass time

It didn't. You're not required by law to adhere to the code or anything, it's optional, and the only reason people adhered to it was that most newstands would refuse to carry your magazines if you didn't.
Heavy Metal, along with 2000AD, were direct subscriptions so they didn't really need newstands, and there wasn't a comics code at all in the UK so 2000AD didn't need to do shit being published in a nation where the fucking daily paper had noodz in it. And Heavy Metal was mostly done by French/German artists who REALLY did not give a fuck about violence and nudity.
That was the entire point of the underground comix movement in the 70's, you could publish whatever you want, you just had a very small, usually local audience.

By not being published in a backwards post-McCarthy hellhole.
>>94484010
Never read the Heavy Metal magazines, but I'm sure they're fine/great.
I've only seen the first Heavy Metal movie cause everyone talks negative about the sequel.
But that first one is AMAZING.
>>94485683
if you like Pantera it's a must watch. The second one isn't a great movie but it has some great moments. And some nice tits
>>94485599
McCarthy was right though
>>94485789
He most certainly was Right. In that it was his political alignment, being a bigoted idiot.
>>94484010
It publishes some great stories but it always leaves me wanting more due to a lot of the stories ending in cliffhangers each issue. Do they still publish Hombre stories?
>>94485845
Over 90% of the people McCarthy convicted were actual communists
>>94486017
No shit? Well that makes it perfectly alright then, because to be communist is automatically criminal.
How dumb are you?
>>94486062
In an era where communists often were agents of the soviet union and committed espionage, it mattered a lot. Not to mention that they're disgusting pieces of shit who deserve a free helicopter ride
>>94485763
Good enough excuse for me.
>>94486104
Yep, sweet mate. Whatever. Stop derailing a thread about sweet sci-fi with your dumb bullshit.
>>94486017
Do you have a single fact to back that up?
>>94486104
fuck off. If you read into the historical impact of the anti-communist movement in the US it destroyed a lot of really great people. Fucking Oppenheimer's career and private life was destroyed by that. The same Oppenheimer that built the fucking atomic bomb
>>94487318
yeah, I'm definately a right side of the chart guy. And I have to say Black Metal should be on the right side near goth
>>94484239
Because they were a magazine. Same reason that Warren Magazines (Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella) didn't use the Code, and Mad Magazine didn't use the Code. Seriously, you really need to read up on stuff.
