Neither. Both are higher points than most but I don't think any single TF media can be considered "the best" without giving into nostalgic whims or personal preferences that may not exactly be objective. I will say though, that in my personal opinion pic related is probably the piece of TF media that best captures the spirit of the franchise that all others should take note from, if that counts for anything.

Animated is a short and sweet story that isn't tied to any crappy prequel or sequel series. Plus the animation holds up better than Beast Wars, which is quite unsightly to look at even if it was groundbreaking in 1995.

Totally false, The G1 cartoon ended years before I was born, and I was able to watch BW perfectly fine using only the context provided within the show. Its like saying you can't watch Star wars episode 4 without watching the prequels.

The anime's had their fucking kiddy anime aka Pokemon/Digimon/Beyblade vibe going on, Prime was dark and moody and closer to Beast Wars comparatively in tone than G1, and the most recent show almost has like a Power Rangers type lighthearted monster of the week vibe from what I've seen of it

Beast Wars had a lot of cartoon humor that made it great, but it was still more dramatic and took itself more seriously than G1 was when it wanted to, that and the focus on a smaller cast of bots rather than a never ending revolving door of an ensemble cast are what Prime and BW have in common.

The peak is probably IDW, honestly. Theres a lot of good stuff in those comics. The art is usually good to great. The stories range from the usual "why the fuck am I reading this?" to "why the fuck isn't EVERYONE reading this!" that comics tend to go through, but on average is better than most mainstream comics these days.

I'm not the best person on the subject, so I'm hoping Shockwave fans chime in. I'm already regretting replying the first time. Personally, I've found his loyalty in the cartoons to be endearing, and the IDW Shockwave plot was impressive in its own right.

I'm actually pretty partial to Marvel Shockwave, though, who was a great treacherous SIC. He also showed a lot of emotion for someone who wasn't supposed to have any.

As far as intelligent writing, Animated was the last time we had that in a TF cartoon, but I won't deny that Prime and RID2015 are very well animated.

Hopefully Boulder Media has better writers than we have had since Prime.

I grew up with Beast Wars as a kid so it has a special place in my heart. I've rewatched it about a dozen times and I think it's still really well written and has some of the best character development of ANY TF story. Mostly in part to the small cast and lack of any human screen time.

However, TFA will have to be the best for me. It captured my attention in a way no other TF media has in any context. The new characters introduced like Lockdown and Lugnut, the spin on old characters like Prowl who was made actually likeable, and the story which was the most radical one we have had since HE. I really loved how they handled the cultures between the Bots and Cons. Something JRO sorely fucking lacks when writing them. I think there was an understanding that those characters were made to be fucked up, but also to still have their own compassion that didn't need to be hamfistedly made into a bitch fest of woe is me and traitorous redemption arcs with character assassination.

I miss TFA. Every day since it ended.

That was kind of a weird form change under very specific circumstances. He was carrying the original Megatron's spark alongside his own, which as was established from Primal doing the same with Optimus' spark, apparently causes drastic, unpredictable shifts in their forms.

With Primal, he gained jet and tank altmodes and became more technological looking. It's possible something similar might have happened to Megs, but he was blasted into a pool of lava and sank in it before he could really start changing. I guess being damaged, drowning in molten rock, and most likely BURNING with rage at his potential defeat at such a critical moment pushed the transformation away from his robot mode having priority and onto his beast mode. So the tyrannosaurus mutates into a dragon.

It doesn't actually make a lot of sense, and is mostly just there to look cool. If you really want a serious explanation, it basically boils down to "don't fuck around with the physical embodiment of your soul".

I feel like if Animated didn't have such a shit artstyle it would be universally loved. It took an interesting spin on the lore with it being after the Great War and dealing with the post war issues, not to mention the great characters and dark subject matter.

It also has the best Megatron since he truly believes that he's the good guy and is fighting to free the Decepticons from Autobot oppression.

In Animated Megatron was hiding in the shadows for the majority of the series so when he finally got his body back you knew it was a big deal. Then you see that it is a big deal when he immediately kicks all the Autobots' asses. Even after that he doesn't fight that much until the final few episodes which makes it feel like a big deal.

Maybe if he lost his sophisticated airs and the likes and becoming more savage, that could have been interesting.

But Prime!Screamer became more of a joke. He didn't change as much as he lost aspects of his personality, and that doesn't really make for a satisfying arc.
