Which one is the peak of the Transformers franchise, Beast Wars or Animated?
Neither. Both are higher points than most but I don't think any single TF media can be considered "the best" without giving into nostalgic whims or personal preferences that may not exactly be objective. I will say though, that in my personal opinion pic related is probably the piece of TF media that best captures the spirit of the franchise that all others should take note from, if that counts for anything.
>Beast Wars is a sequel and doesn't make any sense on its own; you have to have seen the G1 cartoon
>Animated is a standalone continuity that tells a complete story in and of itself.
Animated wins since you don't have to watch any of the other TF shows to follow the plot. If you've see them, you'll get the homages and in-jokes, but the story can stand on its own.
I want to say Beast Wars, but it's continuity sandwiches it between the cheesy/mediocre G1 cartoon and the legit terrible Beast Machines.
Animated is a short and sweet story that isn't tied to any crappy prequel or sequel series. Plus the animation holds up better than Beast Wars, which is quite unsightly to look at even if it was groundbreaking in 1995.
>>Beast Wars is a sequel and doesn't make any sense on its own; you have to have seen the G1 cartoon
Totally false, The G1 cartoon ended years before I was born, and I was able to watch BW perfectly fine using only the context provided within the show. Its like saying you can't watch Star wars episode 4 without watching the prequels.
Hell, a lot of people in my generation think Beast Wars was the ORIGINAL transformers, and the vehicle stuff came after.
I think pretty much every single TF show moved far away from the G1 formula....for better or for worse? That varies from series to series, but they all did their own thing
The anime's had their fucking kiddy anime aka Pokemon/Digimon/Beyblade vibe going on, Prime was dark and moody and closer to Beast Wars comparatively in tone than G1, and the most recent show almost has like a Power Rangers type lighthearted monster of the week vibe from what I've seen of it
>closer to Beast Wars
Beast Wars was a fun, cheesy cartoon with dark moments. Prime was closer to the movies
Closer to Beast Wars than G1. Beast Wars had a lot of cartoon humor that made it great, but it was still more dramatic and took itself more seriously than G1 was when it wanted to, that and the focus on a smaller cast of bots rather than a never ending revolving door of an ensemble cast are what Prime and BW have in common.
I don't see what Prime has in common with the movies honestly other than the designs obviously being a halfway point between the bay designs and Animated
>bland and soulless
>plots that didn't go anywhere
Prime has a lot in common with the movies
>BW took itself more seriously than G1 was when it wanted to
G1 has the movie that was 100% serious business. All the cartoons have serious moments and funny moments. Prime took itself serious all the fucking time.
>G1 has the movie that was 100% serious business
Have you....ever seen it?
>Retardinobots that were a cartoonish "groot" tier version of their original selves
>Junkions and the hero cast dancing with them to Weird Al's "Dare To Be Stupid"
Yeah....so serious bruh, that movie was GRIM
>Prime took itself serious all the fucking time.
I recall an episode that was literally a giant parody of the meme zombie genre
The peak is probably IDW, honestly. Theres a lot of good stuff in those comics. The art is usually good to great. The stories range from the usual "why the fuck am I reading this?" to "why the fuck isn't EVERYONE reading this!" that comics tend to go through, but on average is better than most mainstream comics these days.
Something like that. Funny part is the toy is so goddamn good not even 3P's have put out a better one yet, and they cost 4x the amount or more, easily.
Not any weirder than Marvel's men-in-armor designs.
Honestly, I ended up feeling bad for Prime Scream. He's the biggest cunt of them all for sure, but his Megatron is a psychopathic cokemonster and you can tell he's terrified of him in every scene they're together.
Calm and collected Megatron who takes no shit is a good Megatron, but I prefer crazy sharkteeth Welker Megatron. He's just more entertaining. He makes me happy.
Prime Starscream being the worst Starscream also makes him the best Starscream, if that makes any sense.
Animated Starscream was strong as fuck and he killed Megatron in the fucking first episode. Prime Starscream was everybody's bitch
To put it really simply, Shockwave is treacherous in the comics but loyal in the cartoons.
I've read Dark Cybertron and as cool as that made "Senator" Shockwave seem, I've just never understood the devotion to him by fans. Of course his Ray gun alt form is pretty cool from a toy stand point, but why should I like him more than Soundwave or Starscream?
I'm not the best person on the subject, so I'm hoping Shockwave fans chime in. I'm already regretting replying the first time. Personally, I've found his loyalty in the cartoons to be endearing, and the IDW Shockwave plot was impressive in its own right.
I'm actually pretty partial to Marvel Shockwave, though, who was a great treacherous SIC. He also showed a lot of emotion for someone who wasn't supposed to have any.
I wish TFA didn't have such an obviously rushed final season due to the sudden cancellation news mid-season. In spite of that, it was fucking great, though. I'm still sad they didn't have 2 or 3 more seasons, but it was great as is, anyway.
why is it Ultra Magnus' destiny to be played as a chump whenever anyone but Furman is writing him
>gets owned by sweeps in the movies
>hurr maybe I should have used these giant rockets on my shoulders that are probably best for airborne enemies
>no gotta try to take the easy way out with this magic trinket Prime left me
>which one is the peak
which one had the brown loli?
Animated Megatron was a big guy
no kidding, he was a beast
As far as intelligent writing, Animated was the last time we had that in a TF cartoon, but I won't deny that Prime and RID2015 are very well animated.
Hopefully Boulder Media has better writers than we have had since Prime.
I grew up with Beast Wars as a kid so it has a special place in my heart. I've rewatched it about a dozen times and I think it's still really well written and has some of the best character development of ANY TF story. Mostly in part to the small cast and lack of any human screen time.
However, TFA will have to be the best for me. It captured my attention in a way no other TF media has in any context. The new characters introduced like Lockdown and Lugnut, the spin on old characters like Prowl who was made actually likeable, and the story which was the most radical one we have had since HE. I really loved how they handled the cultures between the Bots and Cons. Something JRO sorely fucking lacks when writing them. I think there was an understanding that those characters were made to be fucked up, but also to still have their own compassion that didn't need to be hamfistedly made into a bitch fest of woe is me and traitorous redemption arcs with character assassination.
I miss TFA. Every day since it ended.
How can you even tell, lack of illiterate short form due to temporary dodging of the hivemind hook using a larger display is designed to induce?
HEY YOU, ARE YOU JUST DOING THAT ON PURPOSE?
Probably the strangest thing about Animated
It's artstyle looked like it would be impossible to create into toys. Yet the toys were probably the most accurate representation of the shows artstyle it's not even funny
Beast Wars. Never been interested in robots turning into vehicles.
I only wish a few more characters had gotten more development but otherwise it's the GOAT
No bully, plz.
>given a mission from the original Megatron to change history so the Autobots loose the war
>says "Nah, fuck that" and hijacks the plan with his cronies for his own ends
>takes NO shit from ANYONE, puts Dinobot down the second he declares his rebellion
>actually bothers to keep tabs on his Starscream (Tarantulas) since he knows full well the little shit absolutely WILL turn on him the moment it's convenient
>turns Ravage, someone given explicit orders to capture him, to his side with a simple pep talk and video from Daddy Megs
>makes a nearly immortal super crazy killing machine into his bitch
>comes THIS close to killing off proto-humanity before they evolve into a threat
>when pushed into a corner, is perfectly willing to END EXISTENCE AS HE KNOWS IT just to win
>does this by DECAPITATING OPTIMUS PRIME
>comes back to steal his namesake's spark, gains that bitchin dragon form
>when TF version of Goku/Superman shows up to kill him, he practically laughs in his face
Yessss......best Megatron indeed
>he practically laughs in his face
Best Megatron is the one who actually cares about his kind an isn't blind by a selfish lust for power
>Managed to cockslap time and space so hard that he became an anomaly in TF multiverse
>Managed to conquer cybertron
>Managed to hold the reset button of TF universe
>Git beaten by Optimus Primal who had the Matrix multiverse helping him
>Still lives as an anomaly in TF multiverse appearing even on TFA Universe with the name of "Joe"
>tfw no proper Animated/Beast Wars crossover
My younger brother bought the Optimus vs Megatron set back when the series started. They looked RIDICULOUSLY good and i was always looking for excuses to pose and transform them myself (he never quite learned how to)
Double Pretender Optimus Prime says otherwise
Yeah, with the DVD of the first two episodes and everything
Feels like the last quality Transformers toys i saw, the ones i happen to see these days in stores are mostly movie tie-ins and all have that cheap look, like i could snap them in two with my fingers. Although that's how the toys industry as a whole looks to me. TMNT seems to be the only franchise worthy of decent looking productions
Beast Wars. This isn't even a contest.
hey, no one ever said that being megatron wasn't unending suffering...
It really doesn't help that the most obnoxious nostalgiafags on this board in general are of course 90s and 00s kids, please leave Transformers out of that shit.
I'm not saying anything against either show both were some of the best TF stuff, I just get that sneaking suspicion of nostalgiafag motives here and can't stand the thought of actually sharing Transformers those types of people who think Teen Titans was an amazing show.
>please leave Transformers out of that shit
How old are you? Transformers is the /co/ genwunner franchise. Being a nostalgiafag if the core of the fandom.
Realtalk, if they ever make a Transformers set in ye olden days, maybe during the Italian Renaissance, what would the characters transform into? Personally I think it would be fresh if we had Transformers shows/comics in different eras. IDW did that I think with that Heart of Steel
The toys are detailed and very posable, but the paint-job on most of them... it's almost non-existent. Really terrible. Makes them look cheap despite all of the sculpted details. .
I repainted mine.
>How old are you? Transformers is the /co/ genwunner franchise. Being a nostalgiafag if the core of the fandom.
>Let me guess, Prime was your first TF cartoon
G1 was my first TF cartoon
Some are nice, some aren't. I'm still mad I never got a Soundwave
That would be fun, but immobile. Maybe use Da Vinci's flying machine and tanks. It would be his wet dream and worst nightmare at the same time.
Also ships and shit.
100% Beast Wars. Animated started off really weak and only got worse into its second season. Season 3 picked things up and started getting pretty good... And then they cancelled it. Beast Wars was god-tier from start to finish
I honestly don't like watching the megatron and starscream scenes, they're just so intensely uncomfortable
I wish they didn't fuck starscream over just because blum did a funni screm
That was kind of a weird form change under very specific circumstances. He was carrying the original Megatron's spark alongside his own, which as was established from Primal doing the same with Optimus' spark, apparently causes drastic, unpredictable shifts in their forms.
With Primal, he gained jet and tank altmodes and became more technological looking. It's possible something similar might have happened to Megs, but he was blasted into a pool of lava and sank in it before he could really start changing. I guess being damaged, drowning in molten rock, and most likely BURNING with rage at his potential defeat at such a critical moment pushed the transformation away from his robot mode having priority and onto his beast mode. So the tyrannosaurus mutates into a dragon.
It doesn't actually make a lot of sense, and is mostly just there to look cool. If you really want a serious explanation, it basically boils down to "don't fuck around with the physical embodiment of your soul".
Everyone knows the best version of transformers is the one where
Soundwave is undeniably gay for the supreme leader.
I feel like if Animated didn't have such a shit artstyle it would be universally loved. It took an interesting spin on the lore with it being after the Great War and dealing with the post war issues, not to mention the great characters and dark subject matter.
It also has the best Megatron since he truly believes that he's the good guy and is fighting to free the Decepticons from Autobot oppression.
>being this wrong
S1 animated was way better than S1 BW and it got better in S2
That last part is kinda the Megatrons after Animated. TFP Megs fights against tyranny and becomes a tyrant, IDW Megs same, Movie Megs fights for his planet against what he believes are race traitor autobots.
Prime Megatron is shit. He shows up way to much which makes him a jobber and you can't take him seriously.
In Animated Megatron was hiding in the shadows for the majority of the series so when he finally got his body back you knew it was a big deal. Then you see that it is a big deal when he immediately kicks all the Autobots' asses. Even after that he doesn't fight that much until the final few episodes which makes it feel like a big deal.
>"With the power of the All-Spark I will reclaim Cybertron for all Decepticon-kind"
>"did your friend tell you how the autobot kind have oppressed us? Driven us from our home?"
This is why I loved Animated Megatron. He actually cared about his people.
>tfw pretty much all the Decepticon were 100% loyal to him, even after his "death"
Feels good, man.
Animated did a good job of adding grey morality to the Autobot vs Decepticon conflict. There's stuff like how the Autobots used living weapons of mass destruction to end the war and the fact that they kept Decepticon prisoners in what sound like Concentration Camps which are apparently bad enough to drive an innocent Autobot insane..
>such a shit artstyle
But the artstyle is great. It's the most interesting looking artstyle of the franchise
>Prime Megatron is shit. He shows up way to much which makes him a jobber and you can't take him seriously.
In most TF media Megatron is the primary antagonist, so yes, he usually shows up all the damn time since he's the main guy to fight, and yes he usually loses because it's for kids and good always beats evil
Just finished watching Prime. Holy shit, what a good series.
I fucking hated that about Animated. Animated Megatron didnt do shit so the entire series is just waiting to see Megs do something...which only happens in maybe 3 episodes. It sucked, and this coming from someone who loves Animated.
>Damn Wyatt and his inexplicable urge to make fanservice references
Animated was the best, because it took the best parts of Beast Wars (Blackarachnia and Waspinator) and combined it with the best parts of every other previous series.
It was like the greatest hits album of Transformers shows.
as much as I love Animated, neither of those are Transformers vs GI Joe
BW had this hilarious scene so it wins.
>best parts of Beast Wars (Blackarachnia and Waspinator)
You could've chosen from Dinobot, Megatron, Rattrap, Inferno, Depth Charge, etc and you chose those 2. Such shit taste.
Fire truck > ape
Animated has this gem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JNb5NaphMQ
That's supposed to be a fire truck? It doesn't look like any Earth vehicle I've ever seen
>He shows up way to much which makes him a jobber and you can't take him seriously
Well yes, he's like G1 Megatron tuned up to 11 with a dose of space coke.
I'd rather Megs and the decepticons show up and job than shitty filler human villains every other week. Animated had way too much of that.
>blackarachnia is the mother of maximals and predacons
There actually was a Rattrap cameo in one episode of Animated, plus a bunch of other characters who only appeared in the art books. If they had gotten season 4, who knows who else they would have brought in.
I'm not against your initial statement. Though I like Animated, human villains should always be more of a side thing for TFs
But let's not pretend humans haven't always been a part of Transformers, there were only two shows that didn't have humans and that's only because those shows took place before humans existed
The shows about giant alien robots take place on Earth, you know
Any specific series or just in general? There's been multiple publishers with multiple continuities.
Damn, I was hoping that there was just one mainline continuity. I don't really know, I've just been seeing some old beast war stuff and it made me want to check out the comics to see if they were any good.
Transformers in general is one big collection of different continuities. That guide there is for IDW's main G1 series, the current publisher and the biggest run. They've done other stuff like movieverse comics, Animated comics, RID2015 comics, Beast Wars comics, an insane GI Joe vs series, a fun Mars Attacks crossover one shot, etc. There's also the original Marvel series and Dreamwave's G1 and Armada series, and the 3H and Funpub convention/club fiction.
I love almost everything Transformers to some extent, but I can't get into the comics at all....they just feel so, non Transformersy, every one I've read gives me that gross Beast Machines feeling of "this is just a story someone wanted to write, but used Transformers as a means to write it"
G1 is the peak like it or not, it was when the series was a cultural phenomenon and where every other series borrows from. As from between Animated and BW, I would say BW if only due to animated sadly coming at the same time when the live action film franchise started. Like it or not the films eclipsed the series. I consider both pretty solid.
WTF? not going to ask about this one
Literally she was part of the Crew, Since her ship was a chasing the Darksyde along with the Axalon, but it was blasted out of the sky by laserbeak and Buzzsaw who allied himself with megs after he stole the golden disk
the reason of why we find her as a Spark in a Protoform was because they managed to retrieve her damaged bodu along with Tigertron's one, and the operation to transfer it to new protoforms damaged their memory banks since rhinox didn't had the proper equipment to do it without risks
>trying to bait this hard
Would you like to see a show with fem Starscream instead of your regular Starscream?
>Armada Starscream was a good, loyal soldier
>his Megatron was an abusive, incompetent manbaby
Starscream deserved better https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6dI4ttTvQ0
Scioli's style is basically 60's/70's marvel as drawn in a contemporary fan-zine, with all the excitement and rawness of an amateur artist trying to copy Jack Kirby. I love it, but I get how it'd rub people the wrong way,
"What is that Awful noise?"
"I... I think it's music."
"impossible, who could be playing music so loud that it would use the very fabric of space as a means of vibrat-"
(in unison) "Astrotrain"
As voiced by Xzibit.
>It's the most interesting looking artstyle of the franchise
It's literally DCAU style transposed onto Transformers. It's not very interesting, especially if you grew up watching Batman, Superman, Justice League, etc.
>It's literally DCAU
It's not. It's a more cartoonish version of the Teen Titans style. Ben 10 omniverse has the same style. Does it look like the DCAU style?
Beast Wars. It was much more engaging for me I dunno.
Oh man. I love the shit out of Animated but NOTHING can top this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8vvbRovPO4
I loved both of them but Animated was taken from us TOO SOON.
Oh don't mind me, best transformer just passing through
>the gun from S2 that remote controls the transformers
Because Animated tried to minimize mass-scaling (not as hard as they could have, like Prowl being tall, but they tried) and it turns out military aircraft are actually really big.
Sorry anon, I searched high and low. All I found was an entry in the lexicon. Can't be read anywhere that I know of.
Can be found on ebay history, none for sale though
I was pretty happy to meet Alec Willows at TFCon a few weeks ago.
>Beast Wars is a sequel and doesn't make any sense on its own; you have to have seen the G1 cartoon
I'm willing to bet most kids who saw Beast Wars had never ever seen Transformers before and enjoyed the show immensely.
or you were like me and had Beast Wars reruns while Armada and Energon were airing and not realizing it was the same franchise.
cause in Canada, Beast Wars was called Beasties and didn't have the Transformers in the title.
>look in the related doujins tab
WTF I like Optibee now
>couldn't call it "Wars" because that sounded to violent or some other bullshit reason
>But they refer to the conflict as the BEast Wars in-show
>And the toyline was still sold as BEast Wars
>And if you were a kid who had Fox in addition to YTV, you watched the show under both titles anyway, so you knew what it was called anyway
It was really one of the most pointless pieces of censorship
Why was Animated Waspinator so big?
Yes, but if I could understand it solely through context provided in the show as a 9 year old, anyone should be able to grasp it.
Its like the original star Wars movies, they give you enough info on the past so you know why its important, but you don't need to watch every movie to get the full story of the original trilogy.
>cartoon Starscreams are whiny losers
>anime Starscreams are based as fuck
Prime Starscreamfags will defend this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU0HeRY03UM
Megatron's boner assumed direct control
Don't mind me, just the
most criminally underratedMaximal coming through
>Its a slutscream episode
pretty sure the only thing starscream would willingly fuck is one of his clones but
there's nothing wrong with a little force
>they's no way you'd get away with the typical Megatron/Starscream dynamic if SS was a fembot.
It rustles me, but it's true. If SS was a fembot and Megatron was beating on her, it would definitely be shown in a way meant to evoke sympathy from the audience, and probably imply somewhere she didn't really deserve it .
Whereas something like Starscream getting kicked around in Prime or G1 is seen as a justified enforcement of the saying
>Act like a bitch, get treated like a bitch
to be fair primescream did a lot of bad shit and got punished but also gotten beaten for no reason
It sucked seeing him go from a guy who skewered cliffjumper and had reasonable control over the decepticons to some whimpering fuck
Beast Wars, easily.
Though I felt Animated had some interesting interpretations of characters. I like that Shockwave was a secret agent for Megatron, I like Blitzkreig and Lugnut. I thought Megatron tricking people into rebuilding him was cool, especially with how strong he was when he came back. But it had a weak over stroy and weak characters.
Characters don't always have to get better/more powerful as time goes on, Starscream made bad choices time and time again and dealt with the unpleasant consequences, because that's what happens when you are a coward who constantly betrays people and tries to play "lookout for number one" in a war with two clearly defined sides
Sure, it might suck if Screamer is your waifu, but I never understood people like that anyway, Starscream has no admirable qualities
Yeah. Prime-scream was a scheming coward from the start. He offed Cliftjumper when the latter was injured, unprepared and defenseless. He's constantly shown to be the lowest of the lowest in terms of morality. He deserved everything he got.
Animated doesn't come off as pathetic because he isn't actively Megatron's second in command, so he doesn't get bitch slapped around as much,
>Animated doesn't come off as pathetic because he isn't actively Megatron's second in command, so he doesn't get bitch slapped around as much,
That and he isn't shown to be as obviously afraid of Megatron. He doesn't turn all "muh master" or begs and whines in front of him. But animated Megatron also doesn't seem like the kind of Megatron to throw a screaming rage tantrum and kick you half to death for being too cheeky.
Not so sure with Prime-megs. He had some serious anger issues. Animated was reasonable with his subordinates as long as they weren't directly trying to backstab him. Prime-Megatron started treating Knockout like shit as soon as Starscream left.
No but ideally a character should get more fleshed out or at least remain interesting.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not suggesting redemption, but it's possible for villainous characters to change while still remaining evil. And yes, that includes becoming worse.
Maybe if Starscream had been even more powerful in the beginning and then basically had a series long breakdown, but like >>94257566 said, he wasn't really that far up the scale.
Maybe if he lost his sophisticated airs and the likes and becoming more savage, that could have been interesting.
But Prime!Screamer became more of a joke. He didn't change as much as he lost aspects of his personality, and that doesn't really make for a satisfying arc.
Sure he was. Later he just became less deluded and realized being a respected leader was never going to happen, so he became determined to stay loyal to Megatron instead. Which he, surprisingly, did keep up with.
You know, Prime gets a lot of shit because of its writing and rushed ending, but think about this
Megatron saw the error of his ways and retired from tyranny, for good. Optimus Prime sacrificed his own life for the greater good. It wasn't all great, but it had some epic stuff like that in its conclusion
I haven't seen much RiD so I don't know how the whole ghost Prime thing played out, but from what I've seen of that show you may as well consider it it's own series as much as the games are
its VERY childrens anime if that makes any sense, you need to be in the mindset for it. very episodic, goofy, non-serious, but has some cool moments. only beast wars 2 is subbed right now
>That and he isn't shown to be as obviously afraid of Megatron
Prime Starscream is pretty much the only Scream who is afraid of Megatron. Actually, Prime Scream is afraid of everyone: his "comrades", the autobots and even the humans.
It's best ship in animated yo
Though you can really ship animated bee with anyone and it's perfect
this is now my fetish...whatever it is
G1 Starscream gets down on his knees and begs pathetically several times/is often beat up by other decepticons. He was just (like everyone in G1) a bit of a retard and made no attempts whatsoever to hide his treachery.
>I'm stupid I'm stupid!
Sari is a loli turned not loli so she gets no twink robo cock sorry anon I don't make the rules about shota robots
>Go against his defining character trait and actually become loyal to megatron, even reacting in horror to Meg's death
>When Megatron comes back he's "Welp. Changed my mind, might doesn't make right. Ok bye guys" and fucks off leaving all his followers behind.
No wonder RiD2015 Starscream was pissed at him, I'd be too if my boss pulled that.
Truly TFA Bumblebee is the strongest of bees. I'm honestly surprised there's more Shockblurr than there are bee pairings, Shockblurr's garbage.
Its ear-play or audial-play in robo terms. I think its fucking cute when people give bee the whole "his horns are sensitive" treatment.
what are you, fucking straight?
Oh dear god, fuck no. All Hail Megatron was a fucking mess, and if you're going to start that early into IDW you might as well start from the beginning, which is what I'd suggest anyway.
>WE AUTOBOT NOW
I only watched Armada, Energon and Bayformers, but I see a lot of cool looking shit from IDW. Any reading guide/chart to help me out pls?
