ITT: Comics that everyone pretends are good but are actually shit
I always just assumed Hush was like Syder's Batman in that plebs love it but everyone whose read more than 5 Bat comics knows that it's overrated shit. It's a mystery that ends with a full issue of the villain literally explaining the entire story to the reader.
Long Halloween and Dark Victory, on the hand, are timeless and great. Sale drawing rogues and gangsters with HEAVY black noir inking is perfecto.
Yes they're recommended for starters but that doesn't mean they're not great.
The art is amazing, the mysteries are tight, the characters are great, all of the rogues are used well as an ensemble, the premise of the gangsters losing the city to the freaks is a smart one and it's probably the definitive Harvey Dent story.
The mysteries in Long Halloween don't make any fucking sense, what comic were you reading?
That book is the proto Loeb book all his tropes all his trappings and the plot that doesn't make a lick of sense to boot.
Yup, the themes are so poorly fleshed out
Contrast with pic related
Sounds like you just didn't really get it
I think any backlash against LH and DV comes from people who've read Loeb's later, shittier works and when they reread his earlier Batman stuff, their mind subconsciously sees some of later Loeb's storytelling quirks. Kind of like how it's hard to read Year One and take it seriously when you know it leads into ASSBAR.
Pretty sure that's just Miller brilliantly writing Cap trying to reconcile his beliefs with 80's Reagan foreign policy anon.
It has nothing to do with comics changing or generational shifts.
Sad part is this is the only time people give a shit about Elliot. Art is nice, and the Catwoman stuff was cute, but its a shitty mystery for a story where one has to ask "why couldnt Riddler just be the villain from the get go?"
It was Alberto Falcone and then either Harvey or Gilda or both depending on who was covering for who (which is deliberately ambiguous).
The specifics of each murder aren't explained because they don't need to be because the motivations for all of the characters is thoroughly examined and it could be any of them.
Personally I feel like one of the key tenets to writing good mystery fiction is you walk away feeling like everything has been explained to satisfaction.
The 2 page epilogue in that book destroys all that came before.
Speaking of anti batmen, I really want Killer Moth to get a revamp. I miss the good old days when he literally was an anti batman defending crooks, not the joke he is now. Fuck Wrath, and that gary stu Prometheus
/co/is so full of retarded idiots, the composition and art of that comic is fantastic and the story is great, it works as both satire of the reagan years and as a straight forward story about batman.
>Daredevil: Born Again is bad
Yeah you have shit taste
This isn't a company wars thread though. But we are lacking in Marvel suggestions so I'll contribute one
>cuck whines about his waifu not wanting him
And said cuck gains omnipotence in a really fun, large-scale cosmic tale of utter nonsense, going so far as to kill half the universe and juggle planets that spell out his name just to impress her.
I fucking love this story.
Everyone says they love the Fourth World however when they say that they mean Mr. Miracle and New Gods
This and Superman's Pal are so incredibly boring and my eyes just fall off of those pages.
It's just not as good as people say
Off the top of my head I can name so many Superman comics that are so much better but are never talked about as frequently
Superman: Secret Identity
Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
Superman: Red Son
All Star isn't bad (it certainly isn't trash like Birthright) but it isn't some kind of magnum opus either
It will never be what DKR is to Batman
I agree with Forever People. But Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen is great
It's bretty gud
I don't hear anyone saying it's a masterpiece but it's gud
FUK THAT'S WHAT I MEANT TO WRITE
I read the comic in a volume with the wrong title
I agree with what you said, FTMWHE is the good one
Those are all very talked about and honestly not that great. WHTTMOT is actually crap and I say that as a huge Moore fan. ASS just gets that obnoxious reputation because of idiots posting that one page over and over again because they heard it's great but the context is what truly makes it a powerful scene, and it is a powerful scene, even if it being reposted a million times kinda takes away it's punch in the long run, but if you stop and empty your mind of all the internet talk for a minute then you remember just how great it was when you first read it.
Post excellent Superman Stories
I agree with both of these.
Here's another one.
I like some of his 60's stuff. Mostly Captain America, Fantastic Four once Joe Sinnott starts inking, and when Thor starts to focus more on Asgard than Earth
Basically if Loki has the ludicrous sized horns it's the right era, otherwise it's Jane Foster romance drama every other issue
At some point it was like I broke through the wall and saw the charm in Lee's dialouge
>Superman: Secret Identity
>Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?
>Superman: Red Son of all things.
>any of these above ASS
Yeah that's better, still below.
Overrated doesn't make it bad, despite the overhype is still the best Superman story by far.
Give me Kamandi and OMAC and Silver Star and Captain Victory every day of the week
Also if I had to pick an inker I think I am partial to Royer
Have you read The Losers? I grabbed as many of those DC collections as I could, hoping for Demon reprint
I would actually go ahead and say ASS is underrated. Most of the praise it gets is shallow
>Oh I heard these people say this is great so I'll say this is great
>Oh I really like the plot here and there, this is great!
But all the nuances are lost. Like the structure, how the 12 issues are the 12 hours of the day.
Any comic with Batman and the Joker. Seriously they are both supposed to be human yet the Joker somehow escapes and survives everything. Like that one comic in New 52 where he kills all the police by walking into the precinct. Absolute bullshit.
Fuck off sure he's got god awful tonal problems (excessive amount of families with children getting slaughtered) and a bit of an overuse of dialogue but his stories are great and he really gets charged plus he's the Cereal King
that comic you like
Man, now that is some shit taste.
It's only problem is that it isn't quite as good as The Dark Knight Returns. It's literally the best story-in-continuity ever written.
Fucking hell, the plebs on this board man.
Hears some things which are actually shit but get praise:
>The Killing Joke
>The Walking Dead
Those stories are garbage because at best they have good art but shitty writing (The Killing Joke) or bad art AND bad writing (Maus & The Walking Dead).
I was going to add Superior Spider-Man, but at least it's fun.
You completely miss the point of fiction don't you?
The point of fiction is stuff happening which DOESN'T happen in the real world.
Were you pissed off in Lord of the Rings when Aragorn killed a bunch of Uruk-Hai or orcs?
>Casuals defend only reading one comic for a character
Unless there is only one major comic for a character (Say Cerebus the Aardvark) you never should say there's one comic that defines the character
ASS is great though
>Cap having adjusted to the new world, holding disdain while still seeing the advancements and improvements (ie learning to use computers)
>not about generational shifts
>not about how cape comics used to be literal propaganda and have changed to a genre that has become subversive and edgy
>LH and DV are the most entry level Batman shit
And when you go back and read them again couple of years later, you realize it was just good art wrapped around a piece of shit mystery story that barely makes sense, because Jeph Loeb can't write mysteries without making it retardedly stupid.
From what I've heard, Kirby's run tried turning the Losers into a kiddie friendly Hogan's Heroes version of WW2, iirc, because he didn't like the previous cynical and nihilistic tone of the book. Which sounds atrociously bad, and apparently a lot of Losers fans hated it.
My interpretation has always been that Gilda's explanation was true and can be taken at face value: she and Harvey were the killer. Alberto's confession, then, was a ploy to get back at his family because of his emotional baggage with them.
Art is amazing and delivers on 100s of pages of actual insane fighting between beings with unbelievable and visually dynamic powers and abilities. Hate the story all you want but this shit fucking delivers on the premise
>all these comics that are universally decided to be objectively good
>/co/ pretending to be contrarian with flimsy "it's bad because I think so" reasoning
>not even mentioning the fact OP made this thread because he was bored, had nothing original to contribute and knows this shit community only responds to SU threads and shitposting
Can you fags just kill yourselves already? I'm so glad Barneyfag is ruining this place because why the fuck do you dregs of society deserve good anything
do people really say Hush was good around here? I thought people either just said it was shit, or saw it as a sort of junk food comic - obviously terrible but still sort of enjoyable
Some of the writing is okay. A lot of the internal Bruce dialogue as he reflects on his friends is actually quite good. Also, Jim Lee's art is fucking beautiful.
But yeah, the story is a dumpster fire. Tommy Eliot is a garbage villain. While I kind of dig the idea of the Riddler working out who Batman is due to Lazarus Pit chicanery the execution of that is horrid.
Like, I was kind of hoping while reading it the Ra's was going to find out who used his Lazarus Pit and go on the war path after him and Batman having to stop Ra's from killing him. That could have been cool, but nope nothing like that fucking happens.
>But people putting it on the level of star wars is blasphemy
Haven't read Saga yet as I'm waiting for it to finish before picking it up so I can't say for sure whether it's better or worse than Star Wars, but...
... Did you see that abomination called Force Awakens? Or that worse abomination called Revenge of the Sith? Or that absolute pile of flaming shit called Attack of the Clones?
Why do people pretend Star Wars is good? It hasn't been good for thirty fucking years?!
That's like saying Romeo & Juliet is super liberal. It's about two lovers on different sides of a conflict who care more about each other than they do about the inane conflict
>Fucking Shakespeare, what a cuck! Capulets are niggers!
Revenge of the Sith was pretty good.
I won't defend FA or AoTC, though.
I'm not talking about the star crossed lovers bit. I've seen scans that imply it's up it's own ass with feminist and trans issues.
>I've seen scans that imply it's up it's own ass with feminist and trans issues.
Because they had a guy giving a girl head? Or was it two girls fucking? I can't remember exactly.
Jesus Christ people are such sensitive fucking snowflakes these days. When I was like thirteen and I found two girls fucking in my comics, I would've had a fap.
Nowadays fucking cuckold fetishists complain about EVERYTHING!
>Revenge of the Sith was pretty good.
Mah nigga. Watching Anakin slowly break through the whole movie was pretty great and ended up being very sad. Probably one of the best SW movies besides Empire and Return.
Haven't seen FA though, but I plan on it soon. Wish me luck.
>that whole sentence
I'm dling it now, but that shit made me sad. Still, I like jumping space ninjas with laser swords, so maybe it'll be good for something. I've seen a few threads here and there about it, and while it sounds like shit on paper(especially the mastering of the force so goddamn quickly) it's probably worth at least one watch.
>ASS may be baby's first Superman comic
but the reason it's enjoyable it's because it's a summation of 60 years of Superman. Some lore knowledge is required. Dunno why it's recommended as an entry point
>not using something that I cannot even fucking describe that in the real world rips pieces from fucking nowhere
>he thinks black man on rocket skies are inventive
