Watching a promising webcomic with a promising story, fun characters and great art become nonsensical, cliched schlock is depressing as fuck.

This is pathetic. Two updates a week were a mistake. And the art still makes me want to vomit. Fuck, I wish I had an image to perfectly illustrate my bitterness and anger so I'm just gonna post something that makes me smile instead.

My friend who also read this comic died last year, during the Zarei date scene. He will never see the comic return to its former quality. Neither will the rest of us, for that matter, but he died during what can only be described as the total nadir of quality.

Man this whole ordeal just lacked any subtlety, style or charm. It's so ham-fisted. There's winking at the camera and there's grabbing it.

I just finished reading the entire comic from the very beginning to see what all the fuss is about and the pacing... left a lot to be desired.

But less in a “Zack is dragging things out” way and more like… Chapter 4 introduced SO many things that would have been better introduced at an earlier time. I feel like there are chapters missing between 3 and 4. The few payoffs were confusing and hardly gripped me. Isaac feeling betrayed by Max withholding information, Eightfold getting separated from Isabel, Johnny getting all introspective of his bullying, etc.

- The comic really should have had a few more “one-off” chapters before falling into Chapter 4. It certainly feels more on-rails than before. I didn’t feel much about Eightfold’s goodbye because Eightfold was introduced in the very same chapter and was barely properly established before she was snuffed out. I guess I was supposed to care, but I left wondering if it was a lost opportunity for some "feels."

- The whole thing about the grandfather whining about Isabel using her book too much was introduced in the same chapter as well and it felt almost hamfisted that shortly after, Isabel was put in a position where she wasn’t in reach of her book and had to rely on herself. Too on-the-nose.

- The scene with Johnny and Ollie after hitball was so melodramatic, he’s been such a meme at this point that it felt like whiplash for him to suddenly get all introspective. I guess he has an excuse since he’s now seeing ghosts, but I dunno. It's also weird to see Ed go from a grinning carefree goofball to an angsty useless weak-willed nerd. He doesn't even feel like the same character from the beginning.

Let's be honest, when these threads were getting popular everyone treated this comic like an alternative to Homestuck. It was fun but it was never the greatest thing ever, it just seemed that way in comparison to HS.

At least have solace that it will never actually be THAT bad.

You're on the nose with basically everything.

The "dragged out" complaints stem from the way Zack uses his pages and his upload schedule. He'll use 30 panels across two or three pages to say something that could have been accomplished in half a page, because he feels a need to give all possible dialogue its own facial reaction. It creates this weird problem where nothings ever fucking happening when following it serially because everything moves so slow, but it's not even satisfying in the long run because there's no substance in any of the scenes either. This is only exacerbated by Zack skipping numerous updates a month at this point.

It's probably why he's throwing so many fucking subplots together at once instead of introducing them at a natural pace as their own focused chapters. There's so many in Chapter 4 especially: Hitball, the School Store and Max's blackmailing, Isaac following Mr. Garcia on a false lead and probably discovering the Cousinhood, Johnny's self reflection about bullying after dealing with a spirit who called him out on it, and whatever the fucking bullshit with the interracial disabled lesbian date is supposed to be. But because the story updates so slowly he probably thinks he's saving time by combining it all together, and that's just making every development shallow and rushed.

Basically this. Paranatural is a B tier comic with F tier pacing, that tries to do this really weird and grand story but has no idea on how to do weird and grand plots with good pacing.

We should be in Chapter 7 right now. Chapter 4 works as an extra long chapter with 2-3 running plotlines and a tangent in the middle, but Chapter 5 should be at least 3 separate chapters. One for dealing with the adults and the aftermath of Ch. 4, one for Max and Student Council, and one for Hijack, Hitball, Demitri, and the kids dealing with the aftermath of Ch. 4.

Zack needs to stop working for a few weeks. Take a breather, and actually plan out what he's going to do. He could have had a lot of momentum going from the end of Homestuck but instead he wants to do this gag-a-week bullshit.

This chapter is such a rambling mess, as well. Every couple of pages we seem to bounce to a new subplot.

Hitball would have worked perfectly as its own chapter, and had all the components. It would have been relatively short and a breather after the heavier Train chapter.

Instead, it's bled into this whole big mess of subplots that just keep cropping up. Add to that the fact that there's supposedly a ticking clock, Hijack, that's lost all impact, because he hasn't been relevant in months.

He's not threating, because the story has basically forgotten that he's supposed to be the villain. Instead we get Minority Bing Lesbian shenanigans and Z-List characters stopping our main characters ever minute.

Speaking about Johnny, what I don't get about he and his gang is this: we're informed they're bullies, but we haven't seen how far their actions can go.

Like, it seems to me that all I see them do is just talk tough and extort pocket money. We hardly see anyone else in/ outside the school getting trashed hard by them. Even Johnny's confrontation with Max at chapter 1 was OFFSCREEN. And now I'm supposed to believe...

You're entirely right about needing more establishing chapters, and you can kind of tell he's actually trying to do that.

Each new chapter tries to focus on a different member of the group, but I think the pace at which he makes the comic has kind of forced his hand.

He can't pump out a 26 episode each week like YYH, so he's tried to compress all the stuff he wants to do, because otherwise the main plot would have gone nowhere in like 7 years.

This isn't to defend him, because, honestly, his art and his writing has seriously lost its pop over the years.

The art may be technically better, as in Zach's become more technically proficient, but the old art had far more character in it than the new stuff does. The writing is just worse, and I feel like he's been too influenced by his new Webcomicker friends and his audience. For example, his ramping up of "Reaction Images" in every page.

I reread some of chapters 1-3 to compare with current pages and the difference in writing is just agonizing. Parantural's dialogue was never really realistic or succinct, but it was just really clever and fun to read. Dialogue from current pages feels like it's from a completely different writer, and the comedy is usually either poorly timed or non existent.
Paranatural always let its scenes run a little long in my opinion, but it was hardly a detriment due to the comedy. It was funny, so people could stand to wait a little longer for the next plot point.

Fuck, it's making me physically angry now with how good Paranatural used to be. Everything in that page was funny, Everyone had good dialogue, The art being actually nice to look at, BACKGROUNDS ACTUALLY BEING INCLUDED IN EVERY FUCKING PANEL, NO PASTEL HORSESHIT.

But what really gets me are the character designs. They went from sharp and unique with nice color palettes to blobby Steven Universe rejects with putrid soft colors that blend in with the pastel backgrounds. It's horrifying with what this webcomic became.

I've said this before, but if he ever actually makes physical comics of Paranatural, I will buy them up to the end of the ghost train arc and will pretend that Zack discontinued the series after that.

Just like you can see girls from decent households straying off the path and zoning around with wannabe-homeless false punkheads, but soon returning to their family for more comfort (and the last ipod), you usually see these webcomic authors defending the cause of teh weak. Without having any idea of what their lives look like, because they're no way they'll ever spend a day around them.

ii) colours ruined because he wanted to be one of the cool kids
iii) digital art and new styles because he wanted to be quicker like one of the cool kids

This results in the core story expanding unnaturally and his focus becoming diluted. Now we're stuck with a million fucking hanging plots so that he can say that he 'did it'

So right in the middle of the ghost train arc. This was also the point where the art was getting visibly worse and writing/pacing started to completely fall apart and collapse at the seams. You could tell Zack's influences and inspirations had changed, as well as his target audience.

Hitball was where it just shits the bed and dies, and there's no going back. It took me a while to realize this, but the shitty forced melodrama between Isaac and the rest of the group, combined with how awful the art got was like a massive siren going off telling me everything I just said.

Drunken rant incoming.
I'm a speedreading pleb and I don't expect much from webcomics so most of what co has to say about it doesn't concern me that much.
I used to compare it to egs but with very different art for the similar plot (childrens get magic and a fuckton of plot threads get pulled).
I know co hates egs but I think each of thoses two should learn a bit from the other. Dan has progressively learned autistic tier discipline in writing, consistency anf efficiency at the cost of having his art feel a tad bit artificial. He also didn't loose too much of his soul to the SJWs even if he's way more apologetic than necessary.
On the other hand, zack had a very dense and rich visual and textual composition that made me like it despite its shortness. But he reacted very badly to feedback.
I think it's like comparing talent to hard work. As much as paranatural has more soul to it, egs will keep its momentum and be around until when dan kicks the bucket (especially since it's dan's fetish relief). I'd still be okay with the current state of paranatural if I had a guarantee zack would never let it die, because I'd be fine waiting very long for all the plotlines to be resolved but his current descent seems to be heading toward an end for the comic.

What I really liked about the first few chapters was the fact that every kid had a 2000s fashion look to them. Overall it just looks more pleasing instead of the new pastel stuff that's hard on the eyes in all aspects. While I mostly agree, it just feels entitled to think that 4chan should have any say in how Morrison does his comic. He's allowed to decide who he feels has valid criticism or not. He shouldn't have to listen to 4chan anymore than he should have to listen to tumblr or Twitter.

That's not to say there's nothing useful to pick up from the criticism that goes on in these threads. I feel like he could gain a lot from them. It's just not something he owes to anyone. /co/ is no exception.

I think that's fair. There's no way to make a comic appeal to absolutely everyone, and as much as I appreciate the brutal honestly on 4chan it doesn't make the critique necessarily any better or more helpful than other sites.
I guess what bothers me most about that tweet is 1) its dismissal of an audience that was, at some point at least, pretty damn supportive of his comic and 2) its needless virtue signalling, like shoving a bunch of underdeveloped diversity and pastel colors into the comic are going to scare away the 4chan goblins like the righteous fire of social justice. It's just the absolute lowest common denominator appeal to moral superiority.


At the end of the day he doesn't really owe anyone anything-- except his patrons, maybe-- but it still sucks to see decisions being made to appeal to one particular crowd that lower the quality of the art and story in the end. And if neither of those are compelling anymore it makes you wonder why it's even happening still.
