I disagree with this, though. A film isn't just it's story; you can easily sell a film on nothing more than suggestion of tone and atmosphere. About as many as try to sell themselves on their plots.

I don't think that a film having a basic plot is necessarily a bad thing, anyway. My favourite director is David Lynch; his plots are usually nonsensical and trying to follow them can be a wasted endeavour. But he lathers his films in so much atmosphere that each scene becomes like an art piece.

If I'm being honest, I think that the obsession with plot above all drags film down about. Not that a strong plot can't be the basis of a good film, of course, but as a medium there's so much more it can be used for that isn't just conveying a complex story.
