Flashpoint caused the nu52, which was an almost total reboot of the DCU (Batman and Green Lantern kept most of their recent history intact, but most every other major character got a fresh start). Rebirth started last year and it's not a complete reboot, but it's gradually bringing back characters that were erased when the nu52 started.
Superman got the most build-up with the pre-Flashpoint character returning in Convergence, then being brought to the nu52 Earth along with Lois and their son Jon. The overall Rebirth story is still going on and it's probably going to be another year or more before we get everything explained and see what all the Watchmen references are leading to. The arc that currently going on in the newest Superman books is (hopefully) going to explain what been going on with Superman over the last year. I think these storytimes are going to cover it if you just keep reading, but Superbro dying and Superdad taking over for him is just the beginning of a year of weirdness.

This has been my problem with superdad since he's taken up the mantel. Nothing he's done feels earned. The only thing he's earned so far is respect from luthor who he refused to kill. Everything else he hasn't earned yet. When New Super-Man feels more like he has a right to be superman than Superman does something is wrong. Especially the way he throws his weight around universe. It just feels wrong.

You must not have been reading a lot of issue. He was a primary heavy hitter in a lot of things JL had faced since Rebirth, as well as the entire Eradicator thing, which was televised to the planet, etc. etc.

Of all the outcomes I hope he gets brought back simply because I would love to see him having a reunion with his batman. I'm dreading him being fused with SUperdad as that just seems like a cheap way for them to try and fix the problems killing off a superman and bringing back a different superman caused. I miss him too though. His first arc was so good and Superbro as a character has some of the greatest superman moments for me. Fair enough I haven't actually read much of the justice league comics since that weird giants book and then all the leaguers getting emotionally distraught or something. Just didn't seem like a good book. I meant things like he didn't earn krypto (who has fully morphed from wolf to hound somehow) he stepped into the adoration of the people not earned it himself. Almost every league member were on board with him within an issue save for batman. He's going to be clark kent again without ever being a kent in this world (Well maybe he was but honestly the time line is so fucking bonkers I still don't understand how this is supposed to be the same world). All this while we get moments of the writers basically telling us to our face that this superman is great and maybe even better than the old superman. I'm not trying to shit on the character because I can totally understand the reason people would want the og superman back, but the way it's been written just doesn't click right with me. I can't properly explain it but in action comics and superman at least something has just felt off about him whenever he's in combat or dealing with someone who isn't Lois or Jon.

It feels kind of like a "damned if they do, damned if they don't" sort of deal: Unless Superbro turns out to be Kon or someone else, there doesn't seem like an easily justifiable way for him to be Superman, considering the flying bricks already active (Superman, Superwoman, Superboy, Supergirl, Steel, Sex Luthor, Kenan), but at the same time, he was pretty much thrown under the bus and the fact that a fusion dance is his best bet at surviving beyond Reborn is pretty sad. What they're doing with superwoman is one of the weird while also being one of the fucking cruelest things done to a fictional character. So while superbro is dying his power fractions off and splits, with it affecting two of his closest friends and giving them superpowers. Only his powers are now killing them, well already killed one of them and killing the other. Like imagine how Superbro would feel if he knew he ended up being the accidental cause of two of his closest friends deaths. That's just mean as fuck and even if they don't kill lana killing of Lois to try and fix a loose end caused by shoving a different continuity into this one. Which raises the question what the fuck was superbro doing shooting off energy beams as he died and how the fuck does that give superpowers? Seriously the ending had some touching moments but it's left a fuck tom of questions that could use answering.

I'm honestly impressed. I've never had a storytime with this much retention, let alone one this long/consistent.
I'd actually enjoy storytiming the new GLs issue Wednesday, because of the variant.
On the other hand, being restricted to a single storytime means I get to read my floppies unspoiled.

I liked Superbro. I genuinely enjoyed Morrison's Action run, really liked what Pak did with him before he was forced to do the entire depowered/Savage Dawn, yadda yadda that they all did for cross-overs. I enjoyed the way he was written for the Batman/Superman book, which probably has (next to Morrison) some of my favorite moments in Superman ever in Crossed World, and except for The Cereal King's stupidity in the first arc, liked him quite a bit through Justice League. I read certain issues of other comics (like the Starfire 001, because Superbro was in them.
There were even some beats that Lobdell wrote that I enjoyed in his run(s). The problem was (a) too many cross-overs; (b) too many POORLY WRITTEN and unnecessary cross-overs (DOOMED, H'EL, RETURN TO KRYPTON), and too many writers doing their own thing with little regard to whether it even made sense to Superbro's status, power levels, sense of self, character just one year earlier, even in some cases, six month's earlier, throughout the entirety of the New 52.
Krypto is a fair point, especially the shift from a Kryptonian Wolf Hound to standard issue Original Flavor Krypto. Even in All Star Superman, they have the page where the Superman Squad talk to the first Superman (at the earliest stage of his career) and say, to the effect, that his (first Superman's) Super Familiar is thrown off by their scents (the Superman Squad's) because they are familiar to him (since they share original flavor's genome) but Krypto can also smell the future on them.
Something along those lines should have been written in the issue where Superdad took Jonathan to Superbro's fortress for medical analysis/help. And, at minimum if at some point they address as some sort of fuckery by whomever the Rebirth big bad or Mr. Oz or some such, they need to retcon THIS Krypto as being Clark's original from the old Pre-FP timeline or some such.
