Last drawing of 2015 for me! Happy New Years, dudes!

I'm still struggling to get my comic off the ground. The issue is I'm torn between "professional" methods of doing pages(comic boards, pen liners, etc) or just doing them like a pleb the way I'm used to(as pictured: ballpoint pen on regular paper).

>>
>>78571269

>She came here because of a shojo manga called Godchild (It's only good for the fab drawings of classy hot men and having a nice gothic aura. It's trash otherwise).

heyyyy.... the story isn't completely garbage. It had a neat "crazy murderous psychopath whodunnit" per chapter format served in a elegant victorian style.

I'll admit I haven't read the end series, I only have the first volume.
>>
>>78571470
It wasn't the dudes that she liked it for. I own the series myself for that reason though. I wanted to learn how to draw attractive men. It didn't really help so I'm stuck with it. yeah, I'm that dumb.

I don't think she even realizes dudes are asking her out or what being asked out means.
>>
>>78571556
It becomes SUPER gay after volume 3. That mangaka really likes unconventional romances (in this case the unconventional bit is more the abuse than the gay) seeing as her other popular work is about incest. I got up to the mad hatter in Angel Sanctuary before I had it.

The final product is presumably 1920x1080, or at least scaled down to that. I guess the only way we can really know how large a cartoon draws is to look at their raw character models and backgrounds.. Adventure Time used to have a blog with all of those. If you looked at the images at their absolute fullest size (meaning binary art) they were absolutely fuckhuge

Not webcomic, but the General Drawthread thinks I ought to post in here.

Anyone have any tips for drawing metallic armor? I can't seem to get Felanor's armor to look right.
>>
>>78576673
there are many better tutorials on shiny things you could easily google, but basically pick a light source, add disconnected shiny bits facing that light source, and then disconnected dark bits facing away. The fact that they're disconnected, instead of running right up to the outlines, is because even the shadowed part of a shiny-thing still has a bit of reflection from surfaces below it, lightening just that rim.. I don't know why the same goes for the lit side, but I believe it's because the light is staying reflective and isolated instead of spreading out over the surface of the thing

>>78576673
I'm not sure but Felanor's armor seems like it's made from shiny gold. So it supposed to reflect many different light sources (like secondary light source). Your biggest mistake is reflections don't match. It seems like chest plate, shoulder armors and leg armors have their own light sources that don't effect other parts of armor. Also chest plate looks like it's A non-shiny metal, like thor's chestplates.
I also would recommend to study some armor renderings. And most issues of conan that are colered by Dave steward are good references

>i need a video or any sort of visual reference of porcelain or any similar type of materials being cut into by a weapon
That's not a thing that can happen IRL. Porcelain is wayy too rigid to be cut by anything like a sword and will just crack and shatter from the impact long before the blade can cut into it.
There's plenty of reference of porcelain shattering in slo-mo on youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=11gzn31BcsA
You'll notice that even with the slow motion, it shatters pretty much in an instant - IIRC that's because shockwaves travel at about 4 km per second in something that rigid.
If you want to cut something like ceramics or rock without shattering it you'll need a saw of some kind.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVHi8T1HusU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB0CSpmPlH4
Note how much dust is released.

Hope this helps, anon, and good luck with your comic.

Don't make that kind of mistake again, Dewd. It's so much worse than all of your other anatomy and spelling errors. If you let that page as it was originally get published, it would have shown your readers that you care so little about the comic that you can't even get major character design details right.

I don't care if it sounds snobby, as a webcomic creator, you need to hold yourself to a standard higher than the audience holds you to, so you can strive to consistently exceed the expectations of your reader and constantly improve your work. Here are the stats for my comic's first complete month without any advertising. We did about 2/3 of the traffic we did in November when we were advertising on several sites, which is way better than the traffic we were doing before we started advertising. By my estimation we have 2-3 times the reader base we had before the advertising started, possibly even more.

This month I'm going to do a lot of free advertising on low-view PW affiliates, see what that gives me. If I get even one click it'll be worth it because I'm not spending any money. Besides that I think I'll do some cheap PW advertising as well on more popular sites.

My favorite face is always dotted eyes. Or this >>78584071

IIRC the studies show that an 0.7 waist-hip ratio is the most popular overall.
Also that the butt should stick out at a 45 degree angle.

Of course this is all pretty academic to comic artists, since it's unlikely these stats are the same when it comes to more or less stylized art and we should probably play to our strengths and draw what we like best ourselves anyway.
But it's interesting.

definitely charming. If you practice a bit more and get your anatomy really up to snuff, this will actually serve you quite well. In particular watch out for those arm lengths. Anytime you're not sure, ask yourself if the guy could comfortably masturbate without looking like a toddler awkwardly reaching into his pants (limbs are shorter at that age)

Yeah that one was.. that was a clusterfuck of meta, because I had previously referenced the monster maskus (it was just the placeholder I had in my head so I went 'fuckit, use that'), THEN went ahead and pointed it out because I realized it was odd for her to just have a mask and just explaining it was all I could think of, THEN the 'welcome, matt' coming to mind automatically.. as did 'weclome', being another homestarism.. and so fuckit I am saying that mat is talking to Matt Chapman and thanking him for the influence

for something I do because I can do it without thinking, I do end up thinking a lot. But I only think about how much thinking I did when someone brings it up, which is why these threads are amazing and great

Please explain, I haven't even read the threads about it, let alone the comic itself. I only heard it was a clusterfuck at times, is that what you're implying?
>>
>>78604542
No.

Shut up.
>>
>>78604616
It's not really really awful like DC is most of the time but the reader will naturally try to read panel 3 and then panel 6, moving left to right like they did with panels 1 and 2, rather than go down to panel 4 like you want them to.
>>
>>78604530
My concern is that the action in panel 3 is going to the left, out of the page, instead of leading on to the next panel.

Similarly in panel 4, her attention is directed to the upper left corner, but the next panel is in the lower right.

The trick to comic panel composition is to subtly guide the reader through the page, directing them panel to panel through the actual panel images themselves.

Image poster here. Is this really important?

To give some context, I never paid attention to the flow and I've been reading comics (well, manga mostly) for many years. I paid attention to the layout which assures the correct reading sequence, the space given to each panel as an indication of importance, the space between speech bubbles as an indication of time passing between each spoken part. The flow as you describe it? Never. I do see it mentioned often when advice is given either in these threads and on certain other board though. Guide the eyes of the reader, make them flow, pardon me if I got it wrong.

This brings me to another point. Let's forget my sketch and layout for a moment and discuss things in general. Is it worth to alter what you have in mind and what you want to show for the sake of the flow? I can see it as a crutch in a similar shape to the ones in modern video games, where you have buttons to highlight plot-relevant elements of scenery, exclamation marks showing you where to go and so on. Sure, they make playing easier, but is it always worth it? Should a comic be treated in a more fluid way, closer to animation, or rather as a collection of important, more standalone images, closer to book illustrations? I see the general advice pointing towards the former often but wouldn't it feel awful to sacrifice the impact for the flow?
>>
>>78605178
If you have to actively think about the layout when reading a comic, the flow is poor which takes the reader out of the comic. You aren't actively supposed to think about the flow either. You follow it without thinking about it. This helps with immersion.

Look, if you just want to make a comic but don't care about it being good, than just keep doing what your doing.
>>
>>78605178
>Image poster here. Is this really important?
yes

>Is it worth to alter what you have in mind and what you want to show for the sake of the flow?
yes

> I see the general advice pointing towards the former often but wouldn't it feel awful to sacrifice the impact for the flow?
You're not getting the point. Flow is probably one of the most important aspects of a visual narrative. People say (the original) Onepunch Man (you should be familar with as a manga reader) is badly drawn, but they often forget that it flows really well and has great panelling. Ideally the flow you create MAKES the impact. Don't get me wrong, but it just seems you look for reasons to not redraw your sketches. You talk about a comic being closer to animation and more fluid - this is a good way for looking at it, yet you have to know what to cut. We don't need every small movement captured in the picture - that's not the point. But we want to have a sense of movement going through the page and action sequences that make sense. I know some animators personally and their comics read really well, because they know how to make a scene dynamic, yet also have a good flow.

>Guide the eyes of the reader, make them flow, pardon me if I got it wrong.
I think you got it right, but I also think you don't quite get the importance of it. You want to create the illusion of movement. If you shit on flow, your comic will lose it's impact, and, most importantly - it will be hard to read. The easier a comic is to read, the better.
>>
>>78605178
>Is this really important?
Yes.
Sometimes.
For example if you want to do a reading pattern that's more complicated than just "go right until you hit the edge of the page". For instance, there are a number of things you could do on your page to make it harder for the reader to go straight from panel 3 to panel 6, like adding a downwards motion in panel 3, separating the two panels with a wider gutter, having the girl's arm cross over to panel 4 etc. On the other hand, I don't think having the girl's gaze on the upper left in panel 4 is a big problem, because the reader's not going to reverse direction and read the previous panel again. It will slow the sequence down, which might be bad if you want it to feel fast, but it won't ruin it or bring the reader out of it.

>I see the general advice pointing towards the former often but wouldn't it feel awful to sacrifice the impact for the flow?
There's no objective hierarchy. Ideally you want to have your cake and eat it too (this is where creativity comes in), but sometimes flow is more important, sometimes impact is more important.
Interrupting an established pattern can increase the impact of a panel. Sometimes having something lack impact is exactly the point you're trying to make.
>>
>>78605423
Hey, no need to get so defensive. And please let's not get my page draft into this, I'm already trying to change the layout. I just want to talk about this problem in general, it's interesting.

I'm wondering why the flow of all things is important to immersion, rather than the characters, setting or the story. Or maybe it's not "rather than" but "along with"? I can imagine the comic being hard to read if panels are completely out of whack, sure, but I can't really agree on it being a principle when designing whole pages.

My reasoning is that the comic as a medium was conceived as an extension of picture books. You lose narration but get to actually draw each scene, provide an image of what's happening. What about connections between each image, each panel then? I'd say it depends on the context. Action, for example, could use some flow to get the feeling of fluid movement (though I imagine even that can be foregone if you have an awesome still in mind). On the other hand, if action stops and or slows down severely, wouldn't breaking down the flow be actually a good thing? You know, to get the feeling of a pause or maybe even for indicating that more time passed between these panels than between previous ones. This is all very subtle though, and would be probably lost on me if I were the reader, ha ha.

Actually I'm going to take a look at some comics I have later today and see how the flow feels there, just to compare our ideas.
>>
>>78605788
>I'm wondering why the flow of all things is important to immersion, rather than the characters, setting or the story
They're all important. The flow is what lets the reader get immersed in the characters, setting and story, by making it easier for them to see all those things in the proper order they're meant to be seen. If a reader has to work to read the comic, they aren't going to spend as much time getting invested in anything.
>>
>>78594620
To start a webcomic.
I have a clear, simple idea fleshed out, but it's all in my head, and I haven't drawn anything seriously in years now. Basically it's gonna be idea a start from scratch, but by the end of the year my goal is to have it setup and start making updates, probably one page a week. It's gonna be tough, but I've been delaying this for too long already.
>>
>>78605503
>Don't get me wrong, but it just seems you look for reasons to not redraw your sketches.
Not at all! I just seem to have a different opinion about this than you guys but I haven't paid much attention to the problem before, so I'd rather talk things out to understand your point of view better.

To not quote your whole post, I can see where you're coming from. You mentioned animators' comics, mind pointing me to some? It'd be a great reference material.

>>78605772
Yeah, that layout is already gone save for panels 1 and 2. It's actually quite a lot of work to design a page keeping all those things in mind, huh.
>>
>>78606017
Well, one of the more known animators I know that also do comics would be Zeurel. The other ones I'd rather keep quiet about, to not reveal my identity. So just look him up on DA or something to see some of his comics.

Size seems right, but was bigger than I expected. Really weird covering the artwork with it, even when I thought I'd written a relatively small amount of text.

Anyone have thoughts/advice on text?

Also, characters introduced!

Nobody is going to remember this from however long ago it was when it was posted (early days, slow start for me and the penciller), so here's the first page (mostly finished, panels need jittering about a bit).

Peaceoneers is a Thunderbirds style affair, very team-driven and retro goofy action.

True. It's a two person team on these pages, with me on script and colours then buddy on pencils.

Thanks, I don't think it's unreadable level bad, but what you're saying about making sure the art makes allowances or works with the lettering is something I need to work on for sure, and it could definitely be better here.

I might ask penciller-buddy to leave marks where he imagined the text going - which will be much easier now we've got a rough idea of letter sizing.

Appreciate the feedback, ta.

Yeah, penciller went above and beyond there.

Really fun to colour, too, especially messing with the line colours and trying to make use gradients without looking too digital. I'm even more new to colouring than am I to writing comics, and getting to experiment with a nice panel like that was a blast.

Readers tend to critically analyze the comic a whole lot less than most creators do. What you think isn't good, a reader is likely to not even notice. The reader also doesn't know the behind-the-scenes story behind each page so things will escape their notice that you can't forget.

I love your art and anatomy and flow- the characters are all great!

I do think that sometimes the camera stays in a little close to the faces- and overall the camera stays at a very consistent length away.

I'd love it if the camera pulled away more, or just had a little more diversity in the closeness of the characters to the viewer.

Webcomics don't exactly have very high technical requirements, so you'd probably be fine even if your pages never passed this loose and sketchy stage.
How's your script? What kind of schedule are you aiming for? How much buffer do you plan to have before you start uploading?
>>
>>78614165
Second down on the left side? Yeah. Sleeping old woman. There's going to be heavy shadowing in the scene so I wanted to make sure to mark off where her eyeholes were.

>>78614197
Haven't gotten that far in planning to have answers for all those. I'm pulling this story from a pre-existing story I wrote a while ago; it'll be an expansion and semi-continuation of Ouroboros: The Sacrifice's plotlines. Not sure what my schedule would be like. Maybe a page every two weeks? I'd probably wait until I had 6 before I started; feels like I'd want a month or so of space in case I have medical problems and whatnot.
>>
>>78614197
Also, what size do you work at? With the way monitor sizes and screen resolution is going, 600x900 might be a little on the small side for uploading.

Two weeks per page seems like a pretty reasonable starting plan if you're gonna go all out on the artwork. The comic's progression is gonna feel tortuously slow, though, both for the readers and for you (That's almost an entire year to make a 22-page chapter, y'know?), so you'll probably want to make it a priority to get it down to at least once a week once you settle into the groove of things a bit.

As fast as they can get it. If I could update my comic more than once per week I would. I'd update it every day if possible. But for you, the artist, it's all about how quickly you can work without sacrificing quality.

Personally, I vastly prefer full color to B/W.

I know I've improved my speed and efficiency at full color pages a lot from just toughing out those early pages that each took two weeks and had me clawing at the walls, and I'm not sure if you can learn that kind of stuff without doing all the slow awkward pages.

Webcomics generally seem to fit an on-going soap opera sort of narrative, but is there any consensus on that being best?

I only really known slice of life style or gag strip webcomics (this thread has been great for introducing me to more action oriented stuff like Miss Melee) and I don't think I've ever really seen a webcomic that tries to imitate published comics with contained 'issues'. Arcs, sure, but never really standalone stories.

Is it just that webcomics fit the ongoing character-driven stuff better as a medium? I feel like I want to do 'issues' with clear structuring and beginnings and endings but also want to do it as a webcomic - does /hywg/ have thoughts on this?

Have Santa in a Peaceoneer uniform for your thoughts.
>>
>>78618252
self-contained stories are nice, a lot of people do it (I think it's a higher number than you think). Sometimes I like those, but other times I just want the ride to never end.. and a selfcontained story means you don't begin what you cant finish
>>
>>78618252
That is the route I would want to be taking. Something of Ann online comic mixed with the occasional interactive media like prequel

Technically Atomic Robo started that way and changed to webcomic afterwards, but.. Seriously? You've never seen one? There's LOTS of them. Lots and lots.

>I don't think I've ever really seen a webcomic that tries to imitate published comics with contained 'issues'.
There are tons of comics that do that. Obviously mine, which you mentioned, but there are a lot more. It's just the ones at the top are mainly daily strip type things.
>>
>>78618398

You're right about Atomic Robo, I really should have thought of that as an example.

I'll admit I'm probably lacking in webcomic awareness - my old favourited links are the most obvious, gag strippy titles there are, and I've never really put the work in to find others outside the big popular names until now.

Yeah, fair point, there are certainly titles I need to check out.

I still think I'd be right in saying that the most popular are the neverending character-driven soap operas though, right? Aside from the video-game gag ones. Which is probably down to what >>78618288 says. The ride should never end.

I don't think one is better than the other, but tight story structure is definitely what I want to work on right now. But I do want it to be a webcomic, not just an 'amateur webcomic'.
I was thinking about doing stuff like 'meet the team' extras, little character pieces with quicker, lower standard art (maybe me drawing not the regular penciller) that are more about the characters and their personalities and relationships. Little extras that you wouldn't get with a published comic but that webcomics seem to thrive in (>>78615343 is such a good example, real concise and just so full of personality, fucking love it).

What kind of differences do you webcomic creators find in the medium? Because webcomics definitely aren't just like published comics.

I actually did learn the basics of drawing over people on DA. Then I looked into /ic/ and launched into more valid resource material. But to be honest: I did improve faster when I still was active on DA, because I drew a lot more. Because I had fun with drawing for and with other hobbyists. Nowadays I pracise specifically what I need for specific things. It's really hard to find a line between wanting to improve and being open minded and yet not taking art too seriously or being too stuck up with it. I feel like I should be able to draw well enough for an okayish looking comic in foreseeable future, given the rate I improved over last year. I'm kind of sad I can't go back to 2014/15 when I wouldn't overthink art and would have no troubles just getting stuff done. When I say I envy the dewd, it's genuinely. Just having fun with your hobby is a blessing. But once you get a taste of the satisfaction of spending more time on something and seeing it finally work out and seeing your improvement, it's hard to go back. You want more of that sweet taste, but you have to work for it. Working for a hobby. How ironic. Considering I started to have something to escape from my dreary everyday life.

A; of course you should, it's fun
B; If you suck, there's no better way to improve. Just drawing characters or environments won't teach you a lot of the skills you'll need to use them in a comic.

Play to your strengths and make sure you remember there's more to art than the technical stuff and you'll be fine.

Just post it, I read 3/10 art comics and enjoy them, look up "Order of the Stick" is one of my favorites. Simple visuals and clever (entertaining) writing and characters. If you have a half way decent compelling story and entertaining characters and visuals, then that is enough, remember, people want a story more than art 9/10 out of the time. Visuals are nice, but, visual story telling is what the name of the game is, so, the story telling usually trumps over the visuals most times, unless you want to create a silent, non-verbal artsy fartsy comic. Would love to see and read what you have in mind, post away, no shame!

Does anyone else get wary or worried about posting their ideas and pre-story writing online, in fear of someone taking and using them? One of the main reasons I have lurked here so long and went anon-status is I never really posted my plot, which I am nearly done with, and I have sketched thumbnails of my pages, need to just work on them fully in a quality manner now, but I wish I could muster up the courage and not be worried about posting my plot or ideas here for critique, not so much of the fear of the critique itself but of the possibility of my ideas or actual entire plot being taken.
>>
>>78633875
Yes, very worried, which is why I never posted any of my ideas until after my comic was online.
>>
>>78633875
You made the plot and it is special to you and appeals to you in a specific way. Nobody is going to have to determination to see some body else's storyline to fruition. The worst you can expect is others taking inspiration or mirroring tropes or minor ideas from what you say about your plans, which you probably took inspiration for from someone else.

Anyway, even if someone tries to make a webcomic based as on your ideas, the difference between their interpretation of what you've written in a thread after being reworked and moulded and what you would do based on your own ideas would be too large for that to be a problem.

Nobody's determined enough to copy word for word your entire expansive plan of a comic, so stop worrying.
>>
>>78633721
I never knew a moth could have childbearing hips like that.
>>
>>78633893

>until after my comic was online.

Basically what I am planning myself too.

Back in high school and college, I had people taking my ideas, just leeching mooches, in college it got me really upset in my art classes, we have to discuss our ideas in a group manner for critique and some rich smug kid who's daddy was paying for him to piss his time at art school cus' he "Didn't want to work a hard, real job" was there, he kept taking my ideas, I noted it to the teacher which she said she did notice and was going to talk to him about, but instead pussied out later on and allowed him to keep taking other peoples ideas, that's when I took my worst ideas and pre-project planning designs and presented them in group critique discussion and hid my best work until after I completed the project, both for shock and awe effect, but the main reason, was to not have my idea taken and used and abused...

Other incidents happened like this in high school, which I hated with a passion, again, someone of a preppy manner, taking my ideas and stories, when I confronted the adults, teachers, they scoofed me off and praised them for their brilliant beautiful work, it made me so hot and mad, the only person who believed me were my Commanders, an enlisted Marine and a Naval Officer in NJROTC, since they knew I was an art-fag, and was working on this, they heard my work as I showed it to the other cadets in the program and word got around in the NJROTC department that I could draw some nice stuff and write some cool stories, but alas, it has taught me, to hide my construction phase of work, this was even later solidified when I learned Da Vinci wrote his works in backwards and in code, because others tried stealing his radical ideas and inventions at the time, simply for profit, rather than for the progression of art, design, engineering and humanity.

>>
>>78626187
I started to do shitty comics when I was 14, I used to imitate poorly local artist Carlos Vogt, and was merely knowck offs of hollywood action films from the 80s.
Then I watched Sailor Moon for the first time in 1996, and started to copy the style of the anime.
I did that until 1999 I think, when manga became more popular and it was easier to get, where I got my hands in the people that inspired me the most, Sonoda, Takada and Adachi, and Betten Court, who are today, my biggest inspirations.
Some years ago, I decided to branch out of manga style and started to test new stuff, and reading new stuff like I Kill Giants, Sky Doll, and other non super heroes comics.

I like to find talents unknown to me, so I'm always on the look, but most of what I learned came from making comics myself, and the feedback from friends and strangers.
I have lots of tutorial books, but I'm terrible to follow them properly, that's why last year I took that seminar on digital illustration.
Which reminds me, one of the guys who taught in that seminar kept in touch with me and offered to take a seminar on animation on another place, which is less expensive than the former, and he insists that learning traditional animation will help me improve my current work.
I see his point, but I'm not sure if I should put another year of my life in something that I'm still doing as a hobby. Then again, I have nothing planned for me this year, other than my usual job.
>>
>>78626187
I wanted to become a cartoonist because of Astroboy.
>>
>>78626187

I started when I was very little, maybe around 5 or so, I used to doodle drawings and pictures almost cave-man-ish on the walls in my room with stories I heard from lullabys and kiddie stories. I remember I used to draw on my math homework, with doodles of little creatures eating the numbers, since I hated math.

I got a lot of inspiration when my mom took me to her work off base in Japan at high schools and colleges, especially in the art departments, my mother taught English in Japan as my father was a Naval Officer in the Navy at the time, we were stationed in Japan. I saw their works, mainly artsy fartsy anime-ish works, but more, better quality with a disciplined classic art background to it. I began to draw little comics of things that inspired me, I loved the one USA military guy from Street Fighter and drew him a lot, since I thought at the time, that's what all military ppl did, super humans that protected ppl like super heroes.

I then began to just mess around with drawing later on in Elementary and Middle School, making characters and goofy little vulgar comics of almost South Park lvl. satirical works. Then in high school, I really got into writing and drawing, I would spend hours on both, using what I learned in my art classes from public grade school and tutorials I learned online.

In college, I took a lot of my classical training both from my grade school art classes and college art classes and applied them to my comic and planning process, thumbnailling ideas, gesture drawing, contours, blind contours, life drawing, etc., and improved further.

The bottom line, art classes are where I learned to draw the basics and build upon that with my own personal studies and experimentation. Some online tutorials are okay, most I hated, and I despised using them, I got a lot more mileage out of actual in person art classes than online tutorials, which I use now more for coloring and effects, not so much drawing.
>>
>>78626187
>>78635818

Focus on classical training if you want to improve, research classical art teachings, which a lot of places don't teach anymore, how to build successful compositions, correct focus/focal points, how paintings and works read across the scape of the picture and where it leads the eye, pre-planning using classical and romantic teachings, etc.

in the process of improving your lines you're thickening them. obviously there's a certain thickness they need to have in order to look right to you
so a bigger canvas means those big thick lines will look normal once you've zoomed out to view the whole thing, but they'll also look better. that's how the pros do it, man. have you seen professional comics before theyre shrunk down to print? HUGE. even newspaper ones

>again, someone of a preppy manner
this delegitimized your whole story for me

ideas are a dime a dozen - execution is where it's at. even if somebody stole my ideas, they wouldn't be able to execute them the same way. my freshman year of college in an art program a girl saw a drawing of my webcomic characters and asked if she could make a comic about them based on it. what she made had characters and aspects that were superficially the same, but everything else was pretty different - even though we were working from the same source material!
>>
>>78637214
you can't be this naive
yes, nobody can truly steal your talent, but if they do your idea first you will always look like a ripoff. a SUPERIOR ripoff, but a ripoff.
It's not like movies where which one is the ripoff is obvious because the ripoff always comes out first (carnosaur, etc)
>>

Why, do you fall in that category of snotty rich kids, regardless, he did take many of my ideas at the time, especially in sculpture class, I created these sculptures using mainly limbs and body parts, everyone else did their own unique thing, but this guy would copy other people's work almost perfectly, usually whatever design we had that we wanted to execute, we had to have a group critique discussion before we actually went onto the material creation process, the designs we showed would be our final designs of how we would execute creating our works, these were out final, FINAL designs and would be created as so. I made a design of a hand, the forearm grew and changed into a tree, the fingers, the roots, I showed this to the class, everyone else had their own thing going, one girl liked avian, birds, nature, etc, another guy really was inspired by metal, and industrial stuff, etc., etc., the rich kid, he was inspired by minecraft and was going to do something blocky, which basically looked like a Creeper that he recolored and added arms, his works always revolved around some sort of gaming aspect or pop culture reference, after the project was done, I come in with my hand tree sculpture, he comes in with one almost exactly like mine in the design, he reversed the hand so the fingers tapered off into branches, and the forearm was the stump, but he had it painted black with black ooze leaking from it, (looked like a disaster anyways). He got points taken off for not sticking to his original final design, and hacking mine, which the teacher told me and noted. Regardless, he did this to other classmates, which made him rather hated and outcasted, similar incidents of him taking others ideas. People began to ignore him.

I remember how bad I felt when I was 9 and I realized everything I wrote for the 'make a book' activity was ripped off of something I just read in a book, whether a real one or one another student had made. The dude had to call me on it. It just happened automatically, I parroted (and usually condensed, as if quite bored)

I believe he dropped out and went into the music program or something to become a DJ, he was into dubstep at the time, and similar stories of his mooching'ness came from the music department, as I had 2 friends who were music minoring, he was disillusioned and rather a mooch.

This anon gets it, ideas "in general" are a dime a dozen, but stories and art, that are meticulously thought out with purpose and passion are works in themselves, these are different than just brainstorming ideas, which, are a dime a dozen to an extent, it's how the individual puts them together and puts their own interpretation, symbolism, meaning and passion behind it that makes it in a sense, respectively their own. When these ideas are taken, it's rather upsetting, time, effort and sweat are put into them, only to be hijacked by someone else.

Luckily, only he and another girl out of the art department students did this, and they were both rather outcasted for it.

The fact that the teachers gently reprimanded them but did nothing else tells me that school's priority is just to collect tuition
>>
>>78637936

It was just a community college, getting my basics out of the way to work on my Bachelors at a better Uni. The art department was actually quite graciously funded, both by the community, and older folks in the town, the town had actually quite a nice art scene with some decent connections in the industry. We were also fortunate to have a lot of talented teachers, a lot of Illustrators, Designers and Sculptors who retired to teach art on the side.

>school's priority is just to collect tuition

But, that is how all college's operate now, they are usually ALL into it for the money, look at how ridiculous tuition is at most places, and the useless degrees they still offer, some college's I've seen, you can major in Pop Culture, or Philosophy still, or some sort of History, which you can only usually get jobs in the education field afterwards. Unless someone majored in Military History paired with a BA (Business Admin.), if you were in the military as an Officer, could get you to some places fast high up in the rank, not excluding the work put into it of course.
>>
>>78638174
indeed. typical short-sighted thinking. What good does it do to squeeze money out of people if you're contributing to that money being worth less? How many recessions do these idiots have to go through before they stop trying to bring the whole world down with their dying overglutted industry?
>>
>>78626277 here again, trying to write a good villain character, any advice?
>>
>>78638586
As long as they have depth, they can be good.
>>
>>78638586
"villain" is a very nebulous role for a character.
Figure out the exact reason they're the villain of this story and not somebody else.
Is there a moral or theme to your story? How does the villain embody it?
How do they match up with the hero/protagonist?
>>
>>78638436

They'll keep doing it as long as they keep making money, sadly, and it will bring us to our knees as an economic super power. So called "educated" people wanting high paying jobs, with degrees that are worthless or do not have a high income rate. Though, funny enough, there are some degrees and programs out there, even 2 yrs. Associates that can make you six figure incomes in as little as 3 to 7 yrs, welding (45k to 65k), semi-trucking (55k to 100k+)(certain accounts), etc., etc. But, no one does their research anymore BEFORE they attend college. Which falls a good portion onto the failure of the public education system of not properly preparing students for the real world, "boy this high level abstract math training is great, but how do I finance, budget, save money, pay bills, go to college and decided what I want to do with my life after school and college?" .

i reckon they're afraid we'd just kill ourselves from the fright
hell, the tiny sliver of 'real life' i had revealed to me in my youth convinced me hard that I wanted no part of it. and now at 30, having still only had a little real life experience and basically having retired from adulthood, I never want it again.
>>
>>78638586
Take a part of yourself that you hate. Make that your villain's defining trait. Obviously don't stop there, but I find that "write what you know" is a good starting point for villains (and any character, really).
>>
>>78638771
You seem like you've got a major chip on your shoulder, buddy.

>>
>>78638849

Yes, real life is terrible, if not taught properly or even at all, I was lucky to been taught by my Commanders in NJROTC, who basically told me this on the first day of class, "That I am nothing but a number to people, to the gov., to my company, I am, as well as most others, are basically livestock to the system, the better number you have, the better you will do and be and given, and even then, that is not guaranteed, so work hard, study hard, and never stop learning, to get ahead of the game"

>Retired from adulthood

So you are retired atm, I don't quite understand, sorry, lol.

>Is there a moral or theme to your story?
what it means to be human
>How does the villain embody it?
Am having a couple different villains through the the series, the two main ones are both god-beings but each has different motives
>How do they match up with the hero/protagonist?
Hero's are trying to stop the world from ending but it's more of a comedy/slice of life than an action story. Going to try and buy lots of subtle feels in there.

i'm not being sarcastic when I say, dayum, you sho r smart.

I pretty much agree with everything you say even if you do come off as really proud and paranoid...

Opinions on my lettering and spacing? Flow/etc. suggestions are also welcome.

not the world's most readable font.. not the best spacing between words.. usually either not enough or too much. but I wouldn't have noticed or said anything if you hadn't asked.

Ah, well it is my first attempt at hand-lettering so all of that is good to keep in mind while I write. Guess I need to account for taking some time after the page is done moving words around so that they gel nicer.
>>
>>78639924
that's hand-lettering? wow, up close I can see it but from a distance that shit is.. very consistent. weirdly consistent man. it looks like it takes a long time to do, too
I'd save that kind for bigger stuff, the letters look really neat up close.

Thanks, anon. So far I'm clocking about a minute per 4 words, which isn't too miserable for me. If ever there's a big text block though: screw that - I'm using a font!

People have told me I have very neat handwriting. This picture here I drew up when I was 14 or so - though I feel I've gotten significantly less decent at lettering and spacing since then. Granted, I spent about two hours IIRC writing all that text down (slow, smooth strokes)

font needs to be bigger. Letters within a word need to have a bit more space between them

I guess that winds up as 'dialogue boxes need to be bigger'? My original writing was larger, but I was told (a while ago) doing the stuff in pic related was a cardinal sin in comics (letters going outside bounds, touching borders, not having a healthy whitespace border between the dialogue border and the text).
>>
>>78640345

I really like the eye panel.

They definitely look better with more room in the dialogue boxes.

The 'I am not a goddess' is obviously meant to be drawn out, but I think it looks strange with the words so spaced out...maybe divide into individual boxes or use ellipses? First panel looks too neat centered like that, maybe it would look better slightly off? I don't know, I trying to work out how lettering works myself (not so ambitius as you with the hand lettering - kudos to you there) so feel free to ignore me.

fuckin beautiful handwriting. so curvy. I just feel like it's only appropriate for things like this. Something a wizard wrote down in an enchiridion.

I disagree, the space between letters is fine, widening that space would not be a good idea

Draw one single picture. There's no way you can fail it.
>>
>>78642640
I feel if I set myself with such an easy goal, I would spend the rest of the year in bed, replaying old games and bitching on /v/
I need to step up my game, I know I can do it, but I don't know what should be my goal for this year.
>>
>>78643618
Draw a 4 page comic, it's such a small project that you have very little chance of fucking up and could nurse it all year if you really wanted to.

You could even use it to show off to publishers.
>>
>>78643618
>I feel if I set myself with such an easy goal, I would spend the rest of the year in bed, replaying old games and bitching on /v/
I mean, you were probably going to do that anyway.
>>
>>78643739
Yeah, I could get started with something different from my usual work, even if I don't get it too far.

>>78643746
Absolutely, but the difference lies in how much I'm gonna do it this year. I proudly admit I barely bitched this 2015, compared to 2014.

The short comic project seems like something I can achieve, so we'll see.
>>

First page is coming along; this is the first time she speaks so I'm trying to figure out what her 'speech' in this form looks like.

If you were writing/directing this comic, and her voice sounded like this, what would you draw her 'speaking font' like? http://vocaroo.com/i/s1zyhToZ2t1V
