how was the soundtrack to the newest movie to you all? i barely noticed it at all besides the few changes to the original theme
>>
>>78274574
Wasn't a fan myself. I hope this isn't Williams last SW soundtrack or even soundtrack in general, I'd hate for him to go out with a whimper instead of a bang.
>>
>>78274574
It had some good stuff amongst the quieter themes, but no real oomph like the Imperial March or Duel of the Fates or whatnot. Hopefully that steps up again in VIII.

Though I want to know why we didn't get the bitching version of the Skywalker theme used in the final trailer, that shit would have been on point blaring over the final action sequences in the darkness.

Is it even in the OST or do we not get a full version of it even still?
>>
>>78274574
Lacking, it wasn't as memorable as the other ones.
>>
>>78274518

ooooo man what a cool looking helmet. This guy didn't even have any lines! Boo. Yeah I know, JJ can't fit EVERYTHING into 2 hours, but this guy is so sweet looking.
>>
Who else thinks Rey is somehow related to Obi-Wan? I think they're misleading us into thinking she's Luke's.
>>
Camrip fucking when?
I need to see the movie again!
>>
>>78274518
That's not new Boba, that's new Zuckuss or something.
>>
>>78274574
Reposting from the last thread:
I've listened to the OST a bunch today, and it's definitely lacking iconic themes like all of his other Star Wars soundtracks, but it's still good. Torn Apart is my personal favorite track, it's very good and reminiscent of "Anakin's Dark Deeds" while also feeling different and new. I really hope he does the rest of the trilogy though, he's still the best there is and I believe he still has at least one more "Imperial March" tier piece left in him.

How could she be? She's like 20-21 years old, Obi-Wan died an old man probably about 15 years before she was born, and never had a family because the only woman he ever loved died during the Clone Wars.

The family the Order took him from.

He had parents, who could have always had another kid after the Jedi took him. Wanting to have an heir they get to actually keep and a child to actually raise and all
>>
>>78275141
Canon and EU never really elaborated on this that much. I know in the EU he apparently had a younger brother and was from a family of nobility.
>>
>>78274574
lack luster, felt like it actually let down a couple of otherwise good scenes
>>
>>78275106
Not only do we, the audience, not know anything about Obi-Wan's family or whether he had any siblings and could have potentially nieces/grand-nieces, but Obi-Wan himself didn't even know his own family because he was taken to the Jedi as an infant. It really wouldn't work or make sense, sorry. I personally don't think she's Luke's daughter either, but that's because now that I'm proven right that Kylo is basically Jacen Solo 2.0, I don't think there's a chance in hell they're going to resist having her be his sister. That poetry is too strong.

>>
>>78274921
The trailer music wasn't Williams.

He definitely didn't bring his A-game this time. I don't think he liked the movie.
>>
>>78275109
And you can condense most any two movies down to a shortlist of basic elements that makes it seem like they're identical.

I'm not saying that this movie didn't purposefully strike a ton of nostalgic chords. It's clear they were trying their damndest to keep this as close to the original trilogy as possible.

And I'm fine with it. If anybody's not okay with that, George Lucas made them a trilogy not too long ago that's thematically different enough they should be enjoy it.

I think he just didn't like not working with George Lucas on it. He's good friends with both Lucas and Spielberg, so it probably felt weird doing a new Star Wars without him.

People are usually too afraid to say their own damn opinion due to the fact that it's Star Wars and they don't want to look like the party-pooper in the time that this was supposed to be the 'Great Resurgence' of Star Wars cinema and are willing to nod and wave with the crowd so as not to be singled out and be called contrarians.

Not me, this movie was pretty damn disappointing and I give it about a 5/10, it was meh.

Definitely not dead, embarrassed as fuck, but obviously made it out. They didn't show Kylo Ren or Hux escape either, but we can very plainly surmise they and many of the First Order personnel did manage to escape simply because that's how it works with villains and not specifically showing them die. And there wouldn't be much of a trilogy left to make if that were the case.

I think playing it overly safe and basically doing a future remake of ANH is still a big flaw, though.

I hold trying new things pretty highly, though. Something I actually like about the prequel universe (not the prequels which are trash) is that they do a good job of making it feel like a vastly different era.

This is what, 20 years later but it's just trying way too hard to be a new hope remastered

The pacing was terrible, scenes were barely set up before we moved to the next one, the setting was horribly explained, most of the word building was done via supplemental material unlike the movie they're ripping off, ANH, which did a bang up job with the world building, despite an entire star system being lost, along with hundreds of billions of lives and the fucking Senate nobody seems to give a shit, not even Leia, who can particularly relate to such a tragedy, and finally, Rey is, for lack of a better term, a Mary Sue, she uses abilities she was completely untrained for, like being an excellent pilot for a ship she's never flown before, or being highly proficient with the Force despite not receiving any previous training.

I'm not ready to buy the idea Rey is a Skywalker yet. Why would Luke or Leia leave their daughter on a shitty desert planet as a virtual slave scavenging parts for a scrap dealer, that's literally the way to create another Darth Vader.
>>
I know it's not 100% sure but I think Rei is Luke's kid. What really convinced me was when she won the force grab duel for the saber, she won because she had connection to it's two previous owners while Kylo only had one. That and her knack for mechanics and piloting are traits for Luke and Anni.
>>
>>78276008
She was already skilled with that strange staff she takes with her everywhere, as evidenced by her brawl with those thugs on Jakku. Same principle I suppose, fighting is fighting, and Kylo Ren is very obviously not well trained for it either on top of being fairly injured.

>>

it felt to me like she was struggling to keep it together and got the "win" bc Kylo was already fucked up from Chewie/Finn and getting emotional. +luck. and it's not like she wasn't a fighter, had that staff
>>

It's more that Kylo was really fucked up and not that she was really all that good. Plus she has fighting experience with her staff

He took off his mask.
>>
>>78276008
She handled herself pretty well with that staff against those goons, so she's got some combat experience, and Kylo's not exactly an elite duelist, he had a hard time with Fin.
>>

>Rey just tapes the lightsaber to the end of her staff

>>
>>78276061
More skilled against unarmed villagers certainly, less skilled against Han Solo. Vader's troops CHASED Han down the corridors of the Death Star while he was screaming like an idiot. We don't actually know the real reasons or circumstances for Ben becoming Kylo Ren, and it would be foolish to assume that this is something they'll leave unaddressed in the next two films. Right now, I don't even feel like Snoke is a force user. Aside from his line "there has been an awakening", I don't get the impression that he's actually a Sith or force sensitive. I think he's playing Kylo Ren like a fool, like Han said. Probably fed him some lies about the dark side giving him more power, played on his insecurities and obvious family issues, in order to get himself his own version of Darth Vader. I mean, not only does he have the son of two Rebel leaders responsible for the Empire's downfall on his side which would make for great propaganda, but also has the intimidation factor/built in reputation of having his own Darth Vader going around enforcing his will. People in the galaxy still remember Vader, they were terrified of him, so if the First Order comes out saying they have the second coming of him, that's bound to keep people in line.

Don't remind me about that stupid weapon.
-ABSORBS an entire star to fire a shot.
-That shot is somehow a hyperspeed laser, which makes no sense. They could have just brought back a super galaxy gun, or made the planet arrive in range of its targets, adding a few scenes for the Republic in the mix giving a bit of goddamn context to the whole affair.
-The plasma/laser shot, somehow is visible from a planet several systems away while travelling at hyperspeed.
-The laser somehow divides up into several branches or whatever accurately hiting every planet.
-Explosions are seen systems away in real time.

I mean at least the prequels and the OT TRIED to make things as believable and plausible as possible for a space opera, when the force wasn't involved that is. This was just ridiculous, and wasn't introduced to the plot as well as the deathstar was. It just felt as Abrams was feeding us a rehash of ep IV and knew it so well he decided to gift us with a simple remastered version of the big explosion and action scenes while cutting the exhibition dialogues (like the moff conference in a new hope).

All of that to show us "successful trench run N°3" no surprises, no plot twists, no novelty, nothing.

>Distribution executives are in complete awe and just can’t believe what they’re witnessing hour by hour. After shattering the box office industry’s preview-night record with $57 million on Thursday, Disney’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to knock over opening-day and weekend records left and right. You can scratch out that $110M opening day we heard about earlier. Force Awakens Friday — which includes that $57M it made in Thursday previews — is between $130M-$145M per industry estimates (not Disney). This puts Force Awakens in an opening-weekend range of $250M-$275M; a gross that sends Universal’s Jurassic World current opening-weekend record of $208.8M back to the Stone Age.

There is a middle ground between hard sci-fi and complete and utter over the top nonsense.

The death star was presented as a huge accomplishment and was basically an oversized laser cannon, the cross sections and the pseudo tech behind it were logical in a way, giving it a semblance of realism.

This monstrosity of a weapon is blatantly retarded on the other hand and doesn't even try to hide it.

Kylo Ren is the one who is OP. He lacks discipline and focus, fights like a crazy person, but his ability to freeze people and blaster bolts with the force is unprecedented. He has significant raw force potential but it is going to waste because he isn't being taught how to actually use it. Couldn't even call Anakin's Lightsaber to his hand which is basic shit Luke could do before even meeting Yoda.

let's get one thing straight. kylo has had plenty of training from both luke and snoke.

he was given to luke or training a kid and then fucked things up as teenager probably and then snoke has trained him. he reflects on his training a lot in the novelization.
>>
>>78274518
TFA official objective opinions:

It was a rehash but it was good

Snoke is a stupid name and design

It was weird how the republic were the underdogs, shouldn't the first order be the "resistance" group?

Starkiller base was silly but at least they acknowledged that themselves within the movie

It was better than any prequel because it was actually fun as opposed to watching Hayden Christiansen furrow his brow for an hour and a half and call it acting.

And yet this didn't prevent any criticism of the prequels, which were also supposed to be Star Wars' "grand resurgence".

>Rey is, for lack of a better term, a Mary Sue, she uses abilities she was completely untrained for, like being an excellent pilot for a ship she's never flown before, or being highly proficient with the Force despite not receiving any previous training.

Luke did the exact same thing in a new hope.

He goes from being a farmer to being an ace pilot in a craft he's never been in before. Anakin did the same thing too.

He wields a lightsaber and blocks blaster bolts while blind within minutes of first training with it.

He turns off his targeting computer, which he would have needed to make the almost impossible shot, and instead uses the force to do it.

In the Empire Strikes Back, before he has even met Yoda and undergone any other Jedi training, he knows how to move things with the force and carries his lightsaber for use in combat- as seen when had to use it on a Wampa and later when he cuts a hole in an AT-AT with it. Pretty sure that had Vader ran him down, he would have used it against him too.

>Why are we suddenly acting like people are incapable of being critical of a Star Wars movie?
People got what they wanted with this new Star Wars movie, after they drove Lucas away and put Disney Suits in his place. They got the movie of their childhoods and some found that their childhood is over and realized the damn thing they wanted in the first place wasn't that filling.

I've seen this with my friends(who were harshly critical of the prequels), we watched the movie together and instead of being excited that a movie was exactly what they wanted, they were sort of bored? of it, that's the best way to describe their attitude afterwards. They weren't that damn enthused by it and aren't even going to watch it again, and instead stay home.

I'm not saying this is happening everywhere, but my friends wanted a movie that was supposed to make them feel like kids again and bring in the nostalgia, watched TFA, and are now bored about it.

I have no doubt this happened. This is what happened to a lot of people with each of the prequels and the Clone Wars movie.

But you have to trust people when they tell you that it isn't happening, and lots of people (who did and didn't like the prequels) are telling you that they legitimately like the new Star Wars movie.

You trust people to tell you when they think the thing they were hyped for was shit. Trust them when they admit that the thing they were hyped for was enjoyable.

TFA Audiobook has been added to the MEGA in the OP.

If MEGAnon is here, here's the newest Korean Webcomic(the "Story Before The Force Awakens") translations

Anyone else think we should move the the download links to a pastebin or something? We seem to be getting more downloads each day and it'd be better not to clutter the OP up.

We also need a MEGA for season 2. I've got a pastebin of the links:

You know, there will never be this much hype for a Star Wars movie again. There will of course be sequels and spinoffs, but as time goes on, people will get less and less hyped as time goes on, like with Marvel.

It was especially different this time, because weren't as hyped for the new movie as much as we were happy to have a reason to come together to celebrate Star Wars. Not just nerds and betas, but celebrities, businessmen, and politicians were all in on the celebration.

It was nice to see the everyone come together for a little while. I'll miss these past few months.

ESB and ROTJ both opened to quite mixed reviews at first, only gaining their current reputation over time.

Hwell, maybe in your case. I watch it for the effects, action, character interactions AND plot. The Force Awakens, though so far critically acclaimed due to the first three, underperforms and leaves you empty and expecting more because it doesn't do too well for the fourth. Mostly because it was a straight rehash of A New Hope, without the lore.

>>
>>78279294

He's certainly the least-talented director they've gotten for any of the Disney-Wars stuff.

Jurassic World's box-office was because of Chris Pratt and the JP name, it had zero to do with the movie itself. He's got nothing distinctive about him, he's basically a slightly more talented Marc Webb but without the same blunders on his resume.

>>78279583

Podracing doesn't hold up, the only part about it that works now is the god-tier sound design but the actual scene is like a shit version of the live-action Speed Racer races.

To be fair they where only ever expanded upon in The Clone Wars. When you here about them in TPM with no explanation as to how they really work it kinda ruins things for people.

Midichlorians were a dumb way of taking the mystery of the force as an existential idea and making it pseudo-scientific.

I don't care that there's 10 novels explaining it or that you're written a very colorful 800 page manifesto about all the ways it works so well, I and nearly everyone else find it clunky and intrusive in the setting,

So whine some more.

I really hope that they don't completely ignore or avoid Coruscant in these new films. Ignoring and moving past the prequels is fine, but that planet provided a nice center point and focus for the whole galaxy and it should still be the capital of one of these factions. It would make no sense to have no power center there, when we know how major it is, just for the sake of not wanting to associate at all with the prequels trilogy.
>>
>>78279384

Meh, Revenge may have only had one space battle but the battle over couruscant is still one of the best in the series my opinion tho.
>>

>>
>>78279741

There are legitimate arguments you can make for TPM being the best prequel movie.

I mean it's still shit, but its also the one that looks and feels most like an actual movie, and once you cut the awful political garbage out the narrative is fairly clean and simple unlike the bloated masses of the sequels. I'd argue Sith is the best PT film, but I could see someone saying Phantom is the best and I could at least see why.

Now if someone said AOTC was the best of the trilogy I'd call them a fucking moron.

TPM is so far removed from the actual narrative of Star Wars it might as well be episode 0.

The entire plot could be liquidated as backstory for Obi-Wan.
>>
>>78279507
You are objectively wrong. Please kill yourself.

You know what this movie had the prequels didn't? Life. The prequels are just one empty barren CGI landscape after another.

I loved that there was all kinds of weird aliens and shit in this like the town or camp or whatever where Rey lived/worked. Weird animals like that bird smashing his beak on the metal or the thing drinking from the water where Finn drank. That stuff makes it feel like a real alien places.

The prequels felt dead and they were also plagued by too much Hayden Christiansen which is any amount actually.

Was this movie original? Hell no but it was fun and lively while the prequels were lifeless and took themselves too seriously.
>>
>>78279502
I liked that. An iconic vision of one of the last places Luke held that blade before it kind of went off into its own thing

I can't fucking believe they made a movie with another Angsty Anakin as the main villain again.

At least Anakin made sense. I still have no idea what Weepy McPretty Boy wants besides looking cool like grandpa.
>>
>>78279889

Oh it's absolutely the most pointless of the PT, it's pretty amazing how little of it matters to the overall story.

>let's set up the Trade Federation as villains
>nvm it's the Separatists lol

You really could start the story at AOTC and just have to change a couple lines of dialogue for it to work.

Because they added a way for the Jedi to test for Force Sensitivity? And how does it take away the mystery of The Force? We still know jack shit other than how some people are Force Sensitive and some aren't.

TPM is there to also establish that, even from a young age. Anakin was troubled. It also showed us that Qui-Gon was the perfect teacher for Anakin and that Obi-Wan was too "rule-abiding" for him.

Bad. Baaaaad. For whatever reason, I was under the impression that it was composed by someone else, and I totally believed it because it was so weak. I know that Across the Stars was a ripoff of the love theme from Romeo and Juliet, but it tied together and bolstered the prequels beautifully. I need something like it or Duel of the Fates and I didn't hear it.

The theme of the Resistances was particularly. aggravating in how it missed its mark.

>>
>>78280042

>TPM is there to also establish that, even from a young age. Anakin was troubled

Why does that matter? And Anakin is barely a character in TPM, all we learn about him is he loves his mom and is good with machines.

> It also showed us that Qui-Gon was the perfect teacher for Anakin and that Obi-Wan was too "rule-abiding" for him.

Qui-Gon was too little of an actual character for that to work.

>>78280042
>Because they added a way for the Jedi to test for Force Sensitivity?

Yes, it didn't have to be any more complex than feeling it. Lucas wanted to make it more finite with his own chubby ham hands for his reasons.

>And how does it take away the mystery of The Force?

Because, again, instead of a mysterious nebulous spirit concept, midichlorians reduces it to paperwork. Check yes or no, call us if your erection lasts more than 4 hours.

>We still know jack shit other than how some people are Force Sensitive and some aren't.

Which is how it should be and is appealing.
>>
>>78280256
don't get all flustered,
it's a movie thing in general, let alone a star wars thing.

If i didn't like it here I wouldn't like any movie ever.
>>
I feel like I'm the only person who noticed that the entire central theme of the film was that of emulation and hero worship. Kylo Ren is emulating Darth Vader because he idolizes him for some reason, the First Order is emulating the Empire by building a Death Star and pretending like they're still in charge, Snoke is emulating Palpatine, Rey and Finn are both sort of trying to emulate Han after they meet him, the Resistance is emulating the Rebel Alliance because the New Republic won't fight, the film itself is emulating A New Hope and the OT in general, and J.J. Abrams is emulating his hero George Lucas. People are calling it a rehash and whatnot, but it is literally the through line of the entire film inside and out to the degree that it cannot simply be lack of originality or laziness.
>>
>>78280042
>TPM is there to also establish that, even from a young age. Anakin was troubled.

The fuck are you talking about? He's a sad little doed-eyed slave boy.

>It also showed us that Qui-Gon was the perfect teacher for Anakin and that Obi-Wan was too "rule-abiding" for him.

That never happened at all. Annakin is just a sweet padawan score for Qui-Gon to showoff to all the other Jedi Masters.

Snoke is the lamest thing about the new films.

>>78280352

well, if they ignored the cast, or did a 100% more original story like in the PT, it would not have gotten the love it is getting right now.
So they needed the new characters to pretty much see the old cast as godly figures (like the viewers) .

Just watch though, more original cast will die or be replaced with the next movies.
>>
>>78280415
We don't know nearly enough about Snoke or Kylo Ren's backstory for your criticism to ring true. Snoke is almost entirely an unknown beyond what he looks like and the he's in charge. We don't know what he's trying to accomplish or who he really is. And beyond knowing Kylo Ren's real name, we don't know why he fell to the dark side andbjoined Snoke or what he's really trying to do.
>>
>>78280392
Delete this and do it better.
>>
>>78280490
Yes. That is the problem. Thank you for repeating it.
>>
>>78280196
>Qui-Gon was too little of an actual character for that to work.
Was it really not obvious to you? Qui-Gon was the Master who would foster Anakin's talents and treat his development with compassion, patience, exception and a occasional reality checks because Anakin, starting his training just at the precipice of adolescence would have required it. Obi-Wan was meant to be Qui-Gon's foil. This is kind of made even more obvious in AotC when we actually see how Obi-Wan and Anakin are as Master and Student. Funnily enough, Anakin's catalog of his problems with Obi-Wan to Padme are more less on the dot. Obi-Wan may have been ready to become a Jedi Knight but he was certainly not ready to teach a case like Anakin because he never really did take his own Master's lessons and advice fully to heart, what with seeing things as "pathetic lifeforms" and such.

Of course, the execution was flawed and missed out on addressing some of these notes in TPM; it could have been done better, I won't omit that, but it honestly wasn't that hard to see
>>
>>78277193
Ask how R2 woke up at the very end right on cue. Seriously the worst part of the movie for me. Took me right out. Nobody puts R2 in the corner, and it was just dumb writing.
>>
>>78280548
No, again, that's wrong. Snoke isn't lame because you don't have enough information to make that call and saying we know Kylo Ren's entire backstory is dead wrong.
>>
>>78280415

>why wasn't everything explained in the first movie

do you really think the next two films won't tell us more about snoke and kylo? Really?
>>
>>78280945
Don't be fucking dumb. A movie needs to set up its character motivations before doing things. Imagine if Return of the Jedi was A New Hope, shit wouldn't make sense.
>>
>>78280637

we know the same amount about snoke as we did the emperor in ESB and ANH.
>>
>>78281069
We actually know way more about Snoke than we did the Emperor in ANH because he's actually in this film. I don't even recall Palpatine being mentioned in ANH.
