pretty insane how they do some of that animation

Can't wait for Kubo and all the other Laika movies yet to come.

I was lost when I first went into it, but I kept thinking that "It's a Laika film. They'll probably make sense of everything as it goes on.
Nope.
I was even MORE lost by the end of the movie.
And every "twist" in it my friend and I called out loud before it was even revealed.
Like for instance the crazy old guy being Eggs' father for the few frames that we saw him on screen.
Madame whats-her-face being Snatcher, etc.
We called them all and weren't surprised at any of the twists.
Not to mention the moral is summed up in the first like, 6 minutes of the movie "Yeah, we're the good guys" and you can even fucking tell that those two Are going to have a change of heart. Not to mention most of the characters are either disturbing (in a non-charming way) or non-compelling.
It hit every cliche in the book, while trying to "mix it up" and "throw a curveball" but everything was predictable, and you've seen this message in about 90 other movies out there already.
I never got sucked in watching it and I was fully aware the whole time I was watching a movie. Or watching stop-motion puppets move around.

I really wanted to like it, and I went into it with that mindset, but it was a sorry disappointment for me, sadly
>>
>>78206549
Understandable, nigga. Here's hoping Kubo is a step up.
>>
>>78206549
You have to admit Snatcher exploding and his body parts going all over everything[/spoiler wasn't something you'd normally see. That and Nobody believing the kids even after knocking snatcher's wig off. Overall I really enjoyed it, and Snatcher's whole motivation being a desperate need to have the approval of those he with status, but if you didn't, that's fine.
>>
>>78206799
Yeah, Snatcher's character was definitely one of the most interesting parts of the film. He was despicable but in a wretched, pitiful kinda way. I was almost hoping he listened to Eggs at the end before he exploded. Funny how the movie was called "The Boxtrolls" and the villain got more development/focus than the Boxtrolls
>>
>>78206705
Yeah. Coraline was one of my favorite movies of all time, and that's what kept repeatedly running through my head as I was watching the shittiest parts of BoxTrolls.

I know they have the talent, and the magic.
But where the hell was it during that movie?

I hope they get someone else to do the story and script for Kubo. I really do.. Because goddammit it's LAIKA...

>>78206799
Actually, that was fucking disgusting...
And Snatcher is one of the most sickeningly vile (not in a fun or funny way) villains I've ever seen in a movie. Ben Kingsley was AMAZING though.. like holy shit
>>
I think I only really liked boxtrolls cuz my man grickle worked on it
>>

Also, holy shit,

>While the drawings and paintings sold respectably, the puppets were the real stars of the auction, with twelve of the figures achieving over $20,000, and twenty others selling for over $10,000 apiece. The top lot of the auction was an Evil Other Mother puppet that sold for $50,190, five times its pre-auction estimate of $10,000.

Presumably still in development. I wonder if they would do the whole trilogy: Wildwood Chronicles on it's own is kind of weak, but by the time the third novel comes around the series really develops into something special.

I got the sense from the original teaser that he was sent to kill Kubo or something along those lines: the way he's spying on him behind the rock at one point is shot ominously. I agree, it was a disappointing movie. All your points are right, though being cliched isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's being uninterestingly cliche and not excelling while doing it that is the problem.

In it's only defense, the animation was still FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. I remember at one point, when Eggs is spinning around sometime during the ballroom scene, I was floored by how good the animation looked, and I've been paying attention to details for years. Admittedly the Snatcher dressing in drag was pretty funny.

>I really wanted to like it, and I went into it with that mindset, but it was a sorry disappointment for me, sadly

I know that feel bro.

Worse, after the stellar movies of ParaNorman and Coraline (this latter being an all time favorite of mine), I was convinced that Laika was in the groove to continue making great films. So when Box Trolls came out I invited my mom to come see the movie with me. She handled it well but... ugh, really really not what I wanted to impress her with. I'm still slightly embarrassed by taking her.

I am hopeful for Kubo and I'm REALLY HOPEFUL for the Wildwood film. Feels like a return to Coraline and ParaNorman-esc works.
>>
>>78205024
>>78225895

You know, having watched this video, I must say that Box Trolls isn't as bad a film as it initially felt to me. It's just that it followed to really good films. There's a lot of great elements in there, but they just didn't blend together to create the finer quality film. Still, I think I can admire a lot of the work, and the tiny touches they gave it. The Snatcher is definitely full of them, along with the animation.

>"I guess you could say the odds have never really been in our favor.... conventional wisdom says this wouldn't and shouldn't work.
>
>Yet here we are."

Bless you, Laika.

Still, the fact that we have to argue about it makes it that much more impressive
And makes all the shit stock smoke effects in Boxtrolls that more disappointing
>>
>>78214762
I recently rewatched all I could stomach and its pretty shit
AWFUL voice acting all around with really bad songs.
Shit character designs, with the most "Tim Burton" you can make the characters without appeal
The undead skelton parts were cool, but besides that it was pretty uninspired and just felt like a hot topic preteen's fan fiction

Though it was just a contract job for laika, so it shouldn't reflect too much on them since the animation was still great

Well, Coraline was directed by Henry Selick, who was the director on Nightmare Before Christmas, while Tim Burton directed Corpse Bride. Tim Burton was only a producer on Nightmare Before Christmas. So that's probably why you felt that way.

You should check out Aardman Animations. They did the Shaun the Sheep Movie this year, which was excellent, as well as Shaun the Sheep the TV show, the Wallace and Gromit shorts and movie and Chicken Run. They're very different in style and tone from Laika, but they're dedicated to stop-motion and their work is consistently high quality.

The Psychonauts 2 crowd funding thing has made me remember something I've thought about for years. A while ago I came to the conclusion that there is only one animation studio I would trust to be able to do an animated adaption of Psychonauts, and that is Laika. I mean the art style of the game could very easily be adapted to stop motion (and would probably look better that way than they did in the actual game to boot). And the tone of Psychonauts ranges from goofy, dark humor, REALLY dark humor, and just plain dark/depressing/scary, all of which Laika has managed to convey perfectly within their previous films.

And more than anything else, I just want anyone reading this and both have played Psychonauts and are a fan of Laika's movies to try and picture what Black Velvetopia would look like in stop motion animated by Laika. Just think about some of the other impressive visuals Laika has accomplished like the other world garden in Coraline or the confrontation with Aggie in Paranorman, and then just visualize inside your head what Laika could do with Black Veletopia alone. Because what I see inside my head is absolutely amazing, and the realization that it will never EVER happen is soul crushing.

Coraline is an adaption done right. It keeps the bulk of the book, even using a fair amount of lines word for word, and adding things to it in order to make the movie more cohesive. I'm so glad they went with the doll aesthetic fro the other mother, really helped to make her more sinister.

I would say that's the point. We see the world by the perspective of Coraline, so that's why she is approached by the Other Mother in the first place: she was baited by a seemingly better world than the one she was before.

I loved it, I bet Gaiman was proud he finally had a decent book movie.

On the other hand, I'm sad Laika will probably never touch any of Pratchett's books. I think "The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents" would've been fucking perfect, especially the ending seqence in the darkness, with the white rat. >>
>>78288096
that's because you assume they are going for realistic features
western cartoons have the grace of not being overly detailed (and there is a difference between being detailed and realistic), which means they can have characters that look like whatever being squashed and squished whichever way, and as long as it's not tweened it's seen as good animation
In the same way that anime's problems are geometric undistinguished faces, western cartoons almost never have the characters facing in directions that aren't either directly at the camera or 3/4 view, giant eyes that have tiny black pupils, and in extreme cases, shots where you can obviously see that the closer a character is to the camera the thicker their outlines are, showing how lazy the animation process is

Was Eggs really that forgettable?

No. It's just based off the titles.

ok, maybe i missed the boat on this, but why is everyone convinced that she has a thing for the buttocks of women?
>>
>>78302121
I don't know for certain, but it all just comes down to how many lewds there are of Coraline and the Other Mother though I find it disappointing there isn't more porn between her and her actual mother. The Other Mother and Coraline's actual mother's defining feature is that ass, so I guess the idea evolved that Coraline's just an ass girl in general.

Fun fact. Mr. Bobinsky has a liquidator medal. They were only given out to those that participated in the Chernobyl cleanup. It's probably the reason he eats raw beets which help repair hemoglobin that was probably damaged by radiation.

I love Laika but does anyone agree they'd like it more if it was a 2D studio? While not many companies are doing stop motion it does get made due to Tim Burton. There are no studios making theatrical 2D movies in America.

I'm madly in love with any figure that uses real fabrics.

Unfortunately you can't notice it unless they do a closeup which they do but I wish they were more prominent.

That's really cool. Was he a character in the original book (and if so was he ever associated with Chernobyl)?

Is Tim Burton even going to make any more stopmotion?

I do have to admit, I'd love to see what Laika could do with 2D just because I prefer that medium more than stopmotion.

Though ideally, I'd love to see the next wide release 2D American movie be a huge surprise hit to the point of convincing all the big animation studios to start a trend and all jump on a 2D bandwagon until its brought back to being almost as big as CG again, and I don't have faith that a film made by Laika could have a wide enough appeal for that. Not that I think that scenario is very likely in the first place.

Mr. Bobinsky confirmed a bro
>>
>>78269579
Laika are pretty much the only ones that do it.
>>
>>78309614
He was a character in the book, and I think he may have even had a medal, but I don't remember if there was any indication that he was a Liquidator, or even if he seemed particularly Russian. I think it was implied in the book that Coraline's mom thought he was an alcoholic, though.

The... MCs from the Laika movies?
>>
>>78309723
He does make it every once in a while. While I like Laika's stop motion movies much more than his stop motion IS getting made. Or maybe Laika could do both but that's spreading them too thin. I just want some studio to make 2D movies.

I could see them experimenting more with mixing stop motion and traditional animation after some of the stuff they did in Paranorman.

Oh shit I haven't heard of Kubo before.
Looks fucking great.

That would be really nice. There didn't seem to be much reaction to it though, and it came right before the Zootopia sloth trailer, which got a lot of laughs including one from me.

Gives you some idea how fucking long it takes to animate "just" 40 seconds of footage.
>>
>>78249949
I saw it at an animation festival a few years back. I really liked it, though some of the plot was a bit convoluted at times.
>>

It always amazed me listening to Harryhausen talk about having to use to motion in conjunction with live action. Having to line shit up frame by frame sound crazy.

Is Kubo a kung fu movie?
I can't fucking imagine how to even possibly animate a well choreographed fight scene in stop motion. Can't fucking wait.
