Huh? The guy said he'll draw an example and I'm simply interested what it'll turn out to be, especially since somebody mentioned different styles focus on different values or something.
>>
>>78186009
Don't you mean, there's nothing better than shutting out all criticism that isn't glowingly positive?
>>
So I've hit a writing block in my comic. There aren't enough characters and I'm not really sure how to fit more in. I think the story might be too short and too small for a webcomic.

Basic outline:

>girl is nearly hit by a truck on the street
>girl meets Death (pictured: a grim reaper kind of character), finds out she was supposed to die
>girl convinces Death to take a vacation and experience the world of the living
>Death really enjoys the world of the living and, as a byproduct, stops doing her job
>Death (the concept) slows to a halt and people are not dying, Death doesn't care because she's having too good of a time
>girl has to find a way to fix what she ultimately got herself and the world into

The way I'm writing it, the girl is the only person who can see Death, so I'm not sure how to fit other characters in.
>>
>>78186446
She has to get Death to start doing her job again, so I imagine there would be a lot of comedy where she tries to convince Death to do her job while bystanders give her funny looks.
>>
>>78186446
Isn't this the plot of a family guy episode? This sounds more like a short comic than an ongoing webcomic.
>>
>>78186525
>Isn't this the plot of a family guy episode

You're fucking joking. Is it? Oh my god :(
>>
>>78186525
Also, yeah, that's what I was thinking. It seems like it'd be more of a short than a full-length webcomic. I have other concepts for longer webcomics, but everyone always says to start with a short one. I'm just worried it's /too/ short.
>>
>>78186549
Yep, Season 2, Episode 6: Death is a Bitch.

Death comes to reap Peter but sprains his ankle while in their house. He's out of action for a while, so people stop dying. Peter has to do Death's job while his ankle heals.

The idea of a little girl befriending Death is still a good one though, you just might want to think of a different angle.

Make it a short story, rather than an ongoing. Aim for 20 or 24 pages, and you can eventually print it out as a self-contained comic.

>>78186625
I think there's even a Brother's Grimm story about a man who catches Death in a sack, and everything stops dying.
Doesn't matter if the idea has been done before; what matters is the execution.
>>
>>78186616
The girl doesn't take over Death's job, Death just starts being a lazy ass. Still, that is pretty similar.

G-god damn it, /co/, I've been working on this story for years. My refusal to watch Family Guy has finally bit me in the ass.

That's an old russian folktale, and he does all kinds of cool shit. Catching death in a bag is one of them. What's awesome is once he lets him out, death is too spooked to ever come near him again, so he's immortal. Similar things happen when he tries to just WALK to both afterlives. he's too badass for his own good

I also liked Chakan the Forever Man, dueling death, winning, becoming immortal, and then being tasked with destroying all evil in the world and being tortured with all the screams of everyone in the world in pain whenever he stops
then when he clears out all the evil on earth it turns out they expect him to clean up all the universe

point is nothing is totally original

Sorry for being lazy about it, but I don't have the pdfs of the books that talked about it in greater detail anymore.

In the top left is one of the earlier versions of Bugs, which didn't have as many "golden ratios" as the newer version.

Next is a drawing someone did to make guidelines for Elsa. A lot of the lines follow the same rules, and prominent features land on meeting points. This is pretty common in Disney characters, and goes pretty far back in their history from Snow White to Big Hero 6.

Next is Pixar's rendition of Toothless, from How to Train Your Dragon. They modeled him after a cat, and his facial features follow pretty closely to a golden ratio because of this. It's the same reason babies and baby animals look so cute. Big foreheads, disproportionate eyes, button noses, they all follow a substantial curve. Lots and lots of images have been made showing those lines, some more credible than others. It's hard to dig through the shit to find what you need.

Then I picked two random anime screenshots. One more moe, one more 'realistic'. Both of them very different, but both have similarities. The eyebrows meet at a point similar to where the pupils meet the cheeks which create a gap for the nose that meets a line for the mouth.

I was a little lazy with it and it definitely isn't perfect, but the idea is that the ratio makes things more pleasant to the eye. It's not an exact science that artists use, they just draw something 'close enough' to create appeal. How they proportion things to reach that 'close enough' is up to them, but as a general guideline if you want something to look appealing, make sure it has good proportions.

If you want more exact lines and comparisons, find overlays on real human faces. There's a program called PhiMatrix that helps to do this with your own pictures, but I haven't tried it so I can't really vouch for it.

Don't take it as a law, because there are always exceptions. It's just a guideline that helps.
>>
>>78188231
Generally, you want to keep track of the eyes/pupils, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and chin. Those are the main features that you want to have fit the curve.
>>
>>78188231
the corners of those squares don't correspond to anything in the drawing though
>>
>>78188231
But Frozen is ugly. The nose is too low. Why doesn't your diagram show that?
It looks like someone just drew random shapes afterwards and said "See?"

>>
>>78188631
The corners aren't the only thing to worry about.

>>78188677
The diagram wasn't drawn to show phi, it was drawn to show proportion. The fact that you're already seeing phi in it shows that already.

And, if you could read, I said that it's a guideline. Not a rule. I personally hate all of those characters other than maybe Toothless, but they're all still good examples of multiple studios and artists following the same guidelines.

I need a answer.

It is really worth it? Ms paint seem to be more funnier than gimp.

I really love Binary art.
>>
>>78189328
>it's worse when you lazy out the backgrounds and everyone notices

It's worse when you intentionally put in an Easter egg and people obsess over some random generic background character looking like so and so from some obscure anime you've never heard of.

Readers are weird.
>>
>>78189824
And it's WORSE when you put in an intentional Easter egg/reference/homage to a popular thing and get a bunch of people going "oh, Anon's ripping off [such-and-such]"

I fucking hate comics but here I am
>>
>>78189691
i hear you dude. not everyone wants to work in vector.
but just because you work binary doesnt mean you have to use something godawful and be scribbly. Ideally you'd like your work to look like, say, Prequel, right?

>>78191097
Yeah, the "bargain with death" story is pretty common. I'm glad people are giving me so many versions of the story, part of it makes me discouraged, and another part of me is thinking "well, there's already this many versions of the story, why not".
>>
>>78191722
give it a twist of some kind
instead of the same ol' grim reaper (or the almost equally cliche 'actually he's a chill guy the grim reaper'), make it something else. Maybe it's anubis or thanatos. maybe it's some kind of fat little bird like the one sitting on her head (i mean i guess a raven is more thematically appropriate). Maybe a guy who comes off like the superintendent of a building. something where you're surprised THIS guy is in charge of ALL death, and really go into his personality so you understand why he'd wanna just chill out
>>
>>78191820
I don't know if I want to change her into a guy. I'm pretty attached to the idea of her being a little girl. I think that is kind of surprising, considering what she looks like. Then again, maybe that's cliched too.

>>78193014

>>
i want your tender opinion /hywc/ - would you most be interested in a short comic about:

-a girl witch, her weeaboo best friend who uses spirit week as an excuse to wear cosplay to school and wants to major in "sequential art", and their other friend "wolf girl" a shy girl who wears wolf ears and a tail to high school
-a trailer trash scene kid whose dad is a high school football coach and mom was a professional cheerleader and his four siblings living in, you guessed it, a rural trailer park
-high school girl who does color field paintings for her AP art concentration fantasizing about having her own episode of Art21
-other trailer trash kid who really loves foreigner pretending to be a real juke box hero

all of these would be comedy/magical realism (though the first two would have more of the latter)
>>
What makes you think you have what it takes to create a webcomic? Genuinely curious. Was it praise from your peers in your youth that gave you the push? Or was it inspiration from something you've read?

Or are you just a retard who doesn't know what's going on but wants to put pictures with words?
>>
>>78193014
wait, so that girl IS death?
OH fuck, you did say 'pictured'
but you also said 'a grim reaper kind of character' and she isn't remotely one visually, which is typically what that character archetype means: a look.
... well now i think she's almost perhaps a bit too generic. but I'm still cool with this.
>>
>>78193071
it should be house numbers all the time until you get 'flagged' or whatever, which gives you the unsolvable captchas (literally unsolvable), at which point you have to switch back from legacy to click-the-pictures. and you'll know when you're unflagged because the pictures will stop 'requiring more solutions' and require fewer pictures clicked per solution
>>
>>78193127
Girl witch and jukebox hero sound the most fun to me. You could do a lot with both of those concepts.

Yeah, I worded it like an idiot. I thought describing her as Death and "grim-reaper-like" would give more of an idea of what she's like, but I ended up being redundant.

Here's some old designs of the characters, I wanted to keep Death's clothes darker and more robe-like, and her skin is pale and sickly-looking to kind of give her that "dead" look, I guess
>>
>>78193133
I just always wanted to make comics... I started making zines when I was 12 and just kinda kept going. I didn't really make anything I felt good about until about two years ago though. Also I got to take my first storyboarding test for a TV show months ago and that convinced me I couldn't be totally awful since somebody thought I was good enough to function professionally. How dreamy!!
>>
>>78193336
that helps. i wonder if she'd like, insist on being referred to as a PSYCHOPOMP and not something so crass as a reaper
also your art is familiar.. reminds me of chickenscratch and also that one guy doing that one comic about things fighting.. it had a shark guy and a ginger
i would make the girl on the left's hair rounder but otherwise I really like her.

shit, othergirl looks full-on dude now. unless that's what you're going for, gotta keep an eye on the face length and nose size. but death is way cute. i'm getting a kinda star-vs vibe now. I wouldn't be able to tell, the first thing I thought when I saw your drawings here was "wow, that sure is a generic tumblr art style there". Try to push yourself to be a bit more original, you'll want to get to a point where people who do see your art could recognize it as yours, and not have it look the same as half the art posted on some blog site.

I have nine pages to go on it, but desperately wanna finish before 2015 ends. I've had it totally planned out since about August so it's just a big ol slog at this point - I'm ready to make my big comic after the small one.

The new small comic will be around ten pages, but I think it's borderline irrelevant since I'm not gonna post it online until after it's printed.

Besides, it's not like "what it takes" is all that much, depending on the kind of comic you want to make.
>>
>>78198197
One of the main cast is half of a Mary Sue, she's extremely talented but is shunned by society. She's in the story as both an example of an archetype characteristic to the genre and a counterpart to the main character.

I'm still not sure if it stays like that though, I change at least minor concepts and plot points pretty much every week.
>>
>>78195060
That sounds like my adventure with programming. I used to be so enthusiastic about it in high school, but after finishing college and two years as a programmer I left my job. Everything is more appealing to me now, I worked as a cashier on 14 hour shifts recently and even that was better if you don't include low salary and how little free time I had for myself. This is also why I don't want to ever make drawing my job. If somehow I launch my comic and it gets successful, I'm planning to not charge a single USD for it. I imagine Jeph Jacques must be living through hell.
>>
>>78200202
I had a cashier job too oddly enough. I'd rather draw but being a cashier took no hard thinking. My spine and hips couldn't handle the standing and I was very sick of half the time I was working. The main reason I draw at all is because I hate everything so I know it's either I force myself or I do nothing.

Had an idea for two webcomic though it never went passed planning stages because of multiple reasons, mainly the fact I can't draw for shit.

The first one was inspired by something that I read on a Calvin and Hobbes thread. It would be set in a 'Battleworld' like setting, where many famous artists lived. In this world, a regular man would desperately look for originality and then attempt to create his own stories. The entire message would be about how even if it seemed that everything had been created you should always try something new.

The other was a book about a group of immortals all of whom achieved immortality in different ways and were based on the Myers Briggs personality types. This book would be a mixture between something like Constantine, Doctor Who, Baccano! and Kara no Kyoukai. The immortals would either investigate or be dragged into various abnormalities of the supernatural in at different time periods. The cast would slowly change as time and stories went on as certain characters would fade into the background or die. The only cast members who would be guaranteed to show up in most arcs would be the Immortals themselves who sometimes may just have supporting roles.
Pic would be the basic personality types.
>>
>>78200149
Honestly, the definition of Mary Sue has become so broad it describes any main character the reader doesn't like.
I think the Author self-insertion combines with the character being good at almost everything is what makes one.

I mean, heroes in an adventure series will MOST OF THE TIME be compétents/talented at what they do; it's almost inevitable. Mine are competent too, though ultimatelly tend to need help for one another to progress.
>>
Don't call me edgy, but are there any pieces of fiction that ascribe demons (red skin, horns, work for the devil, chill in hell) as aborted fetuses? As in they immediately are sent to hell to be raised by other demons instead of just being fallen angels/corrupted men/blood related to Satan

Secondly, what about very young children (younger than 2 years old) who unknowingly commit sin before tragically dying going to hell and raised to be demons?

Just curious.

Client work is the devil. Never again. Still so much more to do. Here's some side-project stuff from a script I need to finish rewriting. We got the vibe down finally though. New Sisters this Friday.

>>78193133
I was young and foolish once and we decided against science and law enforcement. That and we saw a lot of people doing it wrong and wanted to do it right.

Also early teenage years during the webcomic boom/bubble in which it seemed like a good idea. Which I think is probably the reason most people are here. It seemed like a more powerful media when we were younger.

>>78193127
>Girl Witch, Weeb, Wolf Girl.
Honestly, you've got the skill enough to make this endearing. That's some very sad content material and seeing it comedy/magical realism could sort of uplift the subject matter. Because everyone did embarrassing stuff in high school while trying to figure out who they were; and they may laugh about it someday but the rough times spent trying to find your tribe can be brutal.

>Juke Box Hero
This is also the correct choice.

>>78201428
An aborted fetus is covered by much of the same scripture that says "If you never knew about God, and had the potential/good in you; you go to Heaven." And that's without stepping into the whole "are they even human at that phase" thing. Most of the time they count as innocent for the purpose of further condemning the aborter to Hell.

Very young children who unknowingly commit sin are in the same situation. With the bonus of possibly being baptized. Intention and penance are huge deals, and if it was unknowingly committed it lacks intention. And if they died tragically, could take a God's Will form of cosmic penance. Likely not hell.

What you're looking for, comic-wise; is probably something like the Succubus/Incubus deal. Succubi gets enough seed to then corrupt it and become an Incubus to create a horrible demon baby/corrupt hellspawn child. Which is really more a Fish Out of Water Hell on Earth thing.
>>
>>78201428
Not sure if it counts but theres a creepypasta called My Best Friend Never Existed where a guy is haunted by a miscarried baby. It takes more an an Anya's Ghost kind of turn though.
>>
>>78201610
The setting would have to establish Christianity as following a stricter/older denomination, or some fictionalized mashup that allows babydemons, with the ignorance clause some Satanic disinfo (like fossils).
>>
>>78201428
I don't know of anything that fits those criteria.
The game Dante's Inferno did have a bit in Limbo where you plow through unbaptized children with your scythe, but given its Christian basis, they weren't really demons.

>>78201610
The modern Church's position is indeed that unbaptized innocents can go to heaven, but it's been a topic of some debate over the millennia, with some theologians arguing that they ended up in Limbo (Pope Innocent III, 12th cen, though I don't think he ever called it limbo or made it official church dogma) or even some corner of Hell that might not be as horrible as everywhere else (the opinion of st Augustine, 4th cen).

Even if it's outdated theology, it might still make for an interesting story.

Comparison: First concept design sketches (two months ago) and recent ones. I changed a lot. I hope for the better. At this point thanks to you folks for the input you gave so far - I think I worked most stuff in.

General Info: Project's going slower than expected, since I work on so many "construction sites" (visual concepts, worldbuilding, script, etc.) at the moment. My inital plans to start the actual comic in January won't work out. But I'll give my best to not slack around too much.

And sorry all I showed so far are the same two stupid character concepts. I think I'll do some reference sheets and be done with those two rascals for now. Critique and notes, like always, very appreciated.

Since I need to force myself to draw on the tablet more (at least a bit every day would be the best), I might as well redraw my character sheets so I don't have to open my notebooks turned sketchbooks. Not that it's very important as there's no real model set in stone, as in no exact eye/nose/mouth placement, no exact head shape, everything is drawn in a "yeah, kinda like that" way. Even when I had exact models and proportions, they kept changing, so now I don't bother until I find something to really stick with.

Anyway! This is Anita, the main character. Haughty, self-confident, with a bit of a nasty attitude. After winning every competition in her hometown in her age category, she's allowed by parents to move to a high school in the capital in order to compete with the best youths in the country. How will she manage, coming from a backwater town at the foot of the mountains to the big city full of talented fighters?

I love sports manga, so I simply want to draw my own. Won't be my first attempt, though the said first one was an abomination pacing- and plot-wise. At least I learned something from that, I suppose. I also like drawing girls, no surprise here, so I'm bending the world and the setting to accommodate a fighting sport where women can compete on an equal or higher footing against men (World Trigger is an inspiration). I've got a lot of details to work out though. Anita has big breasts because I like drawing big breasts. I'm still not sure if main characters will be going to high school (17-20 y.o.) or to college (20-24 or so), but I think certain plot points will work better with highschoolers, and it will be closer to my chinese cartoons too, ha ha.

I'll be posting these sheets hopefully everyday until I run out of already designed characters. I posted several images of my concept in these threads over the last two years, maybe it's time to finally get to work. Thanks for reading my blog.

I know the pose is off.

>>
>>78205652
Thanks. Well, it's just trial and error for me when it comes to costume design.

>What's the story about?

tl;dr: The two main characters travel through a wild west fantasy world.

Lucia Domadora is looking for someone. While being chased. By imperial agents. When she arrives in the frontier, Lucia thinks herself save - she was never so wrong! Even here, far away from the Imperial Mainland she got a big bounty on her head. It was naive to think she could get away with stealing a hierotool* from the royal armory. To get through the wild west world she (kinda) needs the help from Jaime, a former mountaineer who now earns his cash with shady activities. (...) I could tell more, but everything else would be spoilers, so I won't. Sorry, I know very well this tells nearly nothing about the actual story.

*What are hierotools?
Hierotools are weapons or gadgets powered/ activated by aeonite - a psychically receptive mineral. (This means it unleashes energy depending on thoughts and emotions.)

Thought I should give out this info since it gives Aeon Frontier it's name.

>>78201428
The problem is that it's needlessly edgy. There have been more than enough "evil" people in the world to fuel a massive army, you don't need to go looking for new sources. Not to mention, greater demons and the likes don't come from man. In Christian mythos, they're angels that broke away from God. Not all fallen angels were "evil", but a good number of them were banished to Hell.

I've been meaning to ask this for a while - big margins suggest you've switched to Manga Studio, yet panels are still slightly misaligned. How come?
>>
>>78206781
Well I've actually been using Manga studio again sense chapter 12, and you see, I use the panel too to make the panels, you know, the basic square tool. I try to get them right, but I just can't get it pixel perfect. But it's close enough for me.

abortion was considered basically the same as infanticide (and wasnt considered that much of a big deal, basically the same as using birth control) for most of history in most cultures, so i don't think anyone has ever found that that much of a deal.. however there are definitely chinese demons that are dead babbys
>>
>>78206737

Either the couch and Annabeth have to be larger in the first two panels or Jack will have to be smaller. There's no way that girl can reach him in the second panel with the distance he is from the couch.

I think you're the same tracing guy from yesterday and I still agree with some of the assents there. Your style of face looks really odd compared to everything else. It's kinda like the lazy porn where they put animated characters heads on real bodies.

I guess if you like it, keep on trucking, but you're probably gonna get the same comments forever.
>>
>>78202032
that's prty edgy. more fun if you make it some world where catholicism sprang up earlier and instead of adapting the various pagan traditions it did, it got the much OLDER stuff. molech and ashtoreth and all those.. wrapped up in it.
also a meta hurrhurr at creationists is going to rankle my stanks, i'd rather you said dinosaurs were demon creations that fought in a big war and got turned to stone skeletons as a result of angel spells

Didn't Manga Studio have a feature to make panels through division of the drawing field? That would ensure perfect alignment rather than just close enough, but maybe I'm mistaking it different software.

Hmmmm... I think they looked a little better before m8. I love jaime's new boots, a lot, and I see he's now a lefty. always cool. but the way his cape used to have a nice little aegis / poncho look to it really contributed, whereas I've never been nearly as big a fan of duster jackets. and the extra orange makes it one of his primary colors instead of just a 'highlight'
Lucia's new pants and boots and gauntlet are awesome, i wouldnt change a thing, and I love her top. and I guess her sword is more slender now? also cool. but her old goggles, neckscarf, and smaller eyes worked for her I think. just my five cents
oh and I guess it was silly before to have a baldrick UNDER a jacket, but if you're losing the jacket then you can put it back!

Yep, the same guy. Maybe I'll put back my name with the next picture I post for easier recognition.

So you're saying mangaesque head full of symbols won't work with (somewhat) realistic body unless you alter the latter appropriately too? I've never thought about it before but I do think you're wrong if that's what you're trying to say. I don't have enough experience in art to prove you wrong, but applying those ratios you (?) have been talking about in this and the last thread proportionally in one place to make up for a change in another seems like a logical fallacy. After all the reality is the only true ideal; finding rations in stylized work seems to me nothing more than frantic attempts to fit rules into something that has strayed from them on purpose in the first place. The image in >>78188231 doesn't convince me at all. No offense.

Which version of Manga Studio are you using? But I don't think use of the Frame* subtool is restricted across Debut and EX, either in MS4 or MS5. It's not the same as the Direct Draw Rectangle tool.

what that guy is saying is often true (of other people), but it's a rule you have not broken. your style currently works, and looks like plenty of real manga. not the majority, but plenty, especially in the older days. >My personal opinion doesn't suit your facts, sorry.

You've had multiple people tell you your look works strange for a reason. If you refuse to listen to reason or explanations and insist on doing what you've been doing then that's fine, but acknowledge that it's your own stubborn behavior that keeps you doing it. You're just refusing to take the time to learn.
>>
>>78208252
>multiple people
samefagging is bad enough, don't selfcite.
face it man, your advice is good but it doesn't apply to this guy, his style is great the way it is. he did listen, he's not being stubborn, so cut the crap
>>
>>78208461
I'm not the only one that told him his work looked strange. Go look at the last thread. His style looks strange and dated because it is. Quit samefagging to defend yourself, it's pathetic.
>>
>>78208546

If the artist doesn't want to take the criticism, then just drop it. It's on them to take it and if they don't accept it, don't post a dozen times arguing with them.
>>
>>78208753
That was the end of it, if he wanted to keep samefagging to try and defend his awkward art style because he thinks only one person finds his work weird then I was going to let him. I just wanted to make it clear that it was his choice to do that.
>>
>>78208252
I wish I knew if there's more than one person I'm talking about this with.

Let me get this straight: the ratios apply differently in different styles and one feature might correspond with completely different features depending on style we decide to study, so actual application will vary heavily between each artist's work. Not only that, but the ratios are only guidelines rather than rules, meaning it's fine if they don't even align properly with the facial (or whatever is studied) features in a given style.

What I gather from this is that these ratios are nothing more than a puzzle where you take two rectangles and rotate/resize them until they (kind of) fit into something on a studied piece of art or a drawing. It's very convenient, but it's way too vague for me to consider it a "fact".

In the end I'm not buying it at all, unlike a lot of other information and tips from art books and other sources I have more or less incorporated into my drawings. I might be stubborn, sure, but I'm not going to follow something I neither accept nor fully understand. It's possible it's just an issue with communication though; are there any books or publications on this?

>>78208937
I have a couple pdfs somewhere that I know address it but I'll have to find them. The principle is addressed in this video, where he talks about how when you change or exaggerate one thing you need to do it with another: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMUYG1hkY5c

There's a reason for it. In your picture, you gave them larger eyes but the nose and to a lesser degree the mouth stayed the same size, as well as the skull and neck. Because you didn't really change anything else, it looks unnatural. Specifically, it looks unnatural because it doesn't make sense. When you draw something with a style, it helps if the skeleton under it follows rules.

To start, the jaw and cheekbones you drew in the full-body drawing doesn't match the bone structure in the other two. To a certain point this doesn't matter too much, but you've gone past that point.

You made the eyes bigger while keeping the forehead and eyebrows near realistic proportions as well as the nose, so the skull looks very cramped with very little negative space to balance things out. On top of that, you gave her a very masculine neck and masculine trapezius muscles as well as a stocky torso. This probably would have looked feminine in a more realistic drawing, but because you emphasized certain features and didn't change others it looks out of place.

If you're consciously deciding to do something for the sake of style then it's fine. Keep doing what you like and there are bound to be other people that like it. Just don't forget that these are tools to make your work better when you want them.

>>78209166
I'd tell you, but you're not one to listen.

does anyone else have problems drawing backgrounds?

I mean, its not like I didn't watch tutorials or took a look at drawing books but everytime I start, I just feel like, what am I even doing? I feel like I'm drawing every brick on a fucking building or every leaf on a huge ass tree.

I mean its different with drawing characters, every detail is important, the expresion, the gesture, even clothes are part of who the character is but with backgrounds, it feels like they are necessary, this needs to be there and serves no other pupose other than to show, yeah the character is in a physical world and is not standing somewhere in a empty space.

I've tried a lot of things but even with simplifying, denpending on the story, certain elements need to be there, you have literally to fill the whole canvas one ways or another, you can't draw just a tree, you have to draw a jungle and even if it is a simple one, it just never pays off, as you just wasted time drawing a fucking tree.

>tfw I had everything written out, and I accidentally hit some keystroke and loase half an hours worth of writing.

Short synopsis; a group of travelers strung together by fate, uncover a century old conspiracy and save the world from ultimate destruction.

Our story starts with our main character, a ruffian boy who is forced to work as a bodyguard for a corrupt politician.
On a sea voyage, the main character meets a mysterious young girl with an even more mysterious necklace, and an eccentric old scholar of a mysterious race, who are both being illegally transported as slaves.

The captain of the ship (a member of a shifty lizard-like race) reveals himself to be a pirate, and he and his crew make a move to ransom the politician. In the middle of the pirate crew and the bodyguards clashing, the ship is overtaken by a storm, and capsizes.

Our main character awakes to find himself on the beach with the mysterious girl, the old scholar, and the pirate captain. Our main character makes quick work of the surprisingly spineless captain, forcing him to guide them to the nearest town

Meanwhile, the politician finds himself wandering alone on the beach, having a hold of the mysterious necklace the girl was wearing. As he makes his way towards civilization, the necklace slowly starts to drive him mad with power.

Later, the crew finds a shifty tavern wherein the pirate captain is greeted by some bad people who he owes a great deal of money. Just as fighting ensues, the politician makes his appearance, having now been transformed into a malicious beast driven by a desire for power.
>>
A fight ensues, and the crew manage to take him down. However, the people the pirate captain owes money to make off with the necklace, leading into a chase across the desert badlands, rife with thieves, bandits, bounty hunters, and desert monsters.

After a long journey, the group finds that the necklace has found itself in the hands of the richest merchant in the city of Goldhaven, who runs a palace made entirely of gold and treasure. Inside, the merchant prince, Au Shah, the Magnificient has been transformed into an evil grotesque monster, driven by greed.

After a lengthy fight, the main character and his allies have finally gotten ahold of the necklace. Only to be swiftly interrupted when two mysterious warriors, one made from black coal and the other of pure white marble, enter the room, demanding the necklace, as it is an artifact that will end a century long war between their two nations.

END ACT I

ENTER ACT II

The main character and his allies somehow manage to defeat the two warriors, despite being exhausted from the previous fight. The two warriors explain themselves.

The black coal warrior is from a race of creatures, who until recently, had lived underground, unknown to the rest of the world. The white marble warrior is from a race of people who live in the region where the coal race had surfaced, his people have been forced out by the other race.

The main reason for this war, was for the coal race to fulfill a prophecy set out by their unknown god to "turn the white stone black," naturally the white marble of the opposing race was the first thing they went for, and they proceeded to burn and char the region and its people.

The two warriors explain the importance of the necklace, whose centerpiece is a mysterious white stone. And its connection to the prophecy.

The girl decides that if her necklace can be used for good, then it is her responsibility to bring about peace.

The group travels across the world to the war torn regions of Xervanos and Fervor, all the while being chased by bounty hunters, bandits, and a mysterious group knwon as Xu.

Xu is an organization of the coal people whose objective is to bring the artifact of the white stone to the leaders of Xervanos to fulfill the prophecy. It is largely composed of members who are in it for their own personal gain.

As the group travels along, they uncover each individuals past.
The main character grew up on the streets after his parents were put to death for treason against the country. The mysterious girl does not have many memories of her past, only small inklings and many dark places, yet despite this maintains a cheerful disposition.
The scholar reveals he was once a high standing official in the region of Fayearth, but he had been exiled from his country under false pretenses by a colleague he once saw as a mentor.
>>
The pirate captain also grew up alone, and tried to strike it rich, only to end up in tons of debt, so he turned to a life of pirating. As for the marble warrior, he was born into a proud line of warriors and his mothers side was superb in the arts. As for the coal warrior, he is reluctant to tell about his past.

Our group finally makes it to the war fields of Fervor and Xervanos, where they interrupt a major battle. They are set upon by both sides and must fight both armies.

In the midst of the battle, they are betrayed by the coal warrior, who was a part of Xu the whole time. The group is arrested and taken away by the Xervanos army.

The necklace is used in a ritual to revive the Dark God, a god representative of the Xervanos people (each race in this world is represented by a god, as the Xervanos is a newly borne race, they have no god of their own, until now)

The group escapes prison, and are joined by the coal warrior, after realizing the wrongs he had wrought. The group commences battle with this newly borne god, in an ultimately climatic fight.

It is at this point, our true antagonist is revealed. The god is defeated and sent back into obscurity, and from among the ashes steps forth the colleague of the old scholar, the one who had exiled him.

The colleague, who had been gifted with god like powers, reveals that he had been acting as an agent of an entity older than time itself. In this world, the world is run by twelve gods, and it is generally believed they are the crafters of the world.

However, unknown to the world, the twelve gods were originally mortal, and had been granted power by a single entity, the true god of the world. Fearing that the power they were granted could be taken away, the twelve gods locked the first god away for eternity.

Using the colleague as his agent, the colleague crafted the coal like race of people himself, and created the prophecy for the sole purpose of acquiring the necklace, which was in truth, the key to releasing the First God from his prison, and the girl as his vessel.

In one move, he wipes out the entire race of Xervanos, as they had served their purpose.

END ACT II
>>
Has anyone here got any savvy with Tapastic?
>>
As for the final act, I feel like its still kind of bare.

Essentially what happens is they travel to the far north, to speak with one of the twelve gods, the only one who decided to maintain his mortal form, and live atop the highest mountain in the world.

To do this, they must make it through a frozen region filled with barbarians and monsters (pretty much Skyrim)

After they meet with the god, he reveals to them the true beginnings of the world, and how he and his comrades overthrew the First God.

However, the colleague of the scholar character appears, who declares he needs the power of the twelve gods to bring the True God back into the world, and turns the mortalized god into his puppet. A climatic fight ensues, and with the last of its strength, the god sends the group to the Essebu capital (the Essebu are the race that the scholar and the main antagonist are of)

There they reveal the plans of the evil Essebu to the Essebu Council, the ruling party of the Essebu people and a collection of the most powerful mages in the world.

The end comes when, in an attempt to stop the antagonist, the Essebu Council themselves are turned and are forced to fight our heroes. After a long and arduous fight, our heroes come out victorious. The antagonist steals away the mysterious girl and makes his way into a pocket dimension to use her to summon the First God

The defeated Essebu Council use the last of their strength to tear open a portal after them.
Our heroes go after the antagonist and defeat him, but not in time!
>>
The First God has been summoned, using the girl as his vessel, and he plans to destroy the world he felt he so foolishly created and start it anew. With the fate of the world in the balance, our heroes fight an epic battle tearing the pocket dimension to shreds.

The First God is too much for them, and seems to have defeated them in battle. As all hope seems lost, but then the girl overpowers the First God with her overwhelming desire for peace in the world.

The story ends with the girl ascending to godhood and ruling over a world of peace and prosperity.

END STORY

Well, I have one. And I've been recommended to repost my work there too so that a wider audience might find it.

If I've got two posters saying "Don't do that. At all. You must never do that." you've piqued my interests in the alternatives you know of.
>>
I've been playing around with this idea in my head for a while, and I want some second opinions.

I don't know if it's going to be a webcomic or a comic I actually try to get published. Either way, it'll be a while before I get to it. Since I'm already writing one webcomic, and starting another one after that.

So, basically in the world, magic does exist. But, it's been 'locked' away for so long that it's become a fairy tale. Kind of like the real world. The story is set in a medieval-ish time period in a made up country.

Throughout the world, there are giant stone statues depicting giant monsters and beings. They've been there so long that no one really knows where they came from. Most people don't give them too much attention, but there's a small group of people who worship them. They think the statues were the 'Gods of the Ancient World'.

That's pretty much the general setting and backstory.

The main character is a young prince. He's sent on a strange mission by a spirit that visits him in the middle of the night. It guides him to a large room deep under the castle. Without going into too much detail, he gets a little magic power in this room. Then, the spirit guides him to one of the stone statues, and tells him he has the power to awaken the beings inside.

When he awakens the first being, the statue shoots a beam of light into the sky and alerts the whole kingdom. The prince has to go on the run, and goes on a mission to free all of the imprisoned beings.

Eventually his older brother and some girl become his companions on the mission. Every time he frees a being, a marking shows up on his arm, and his magic gets a little stronger.
>>
>>78211544
that'd be nice
>>
>>78214686
Why does he have to go on the run? If no one knows what the statues do, then why do they know what the light is?

Mind posting some of your work? I feel it may sorta depend on what style you utilize too, although with mine I have simple cartoony characters over backgrounds that I try to make more detailed and intricate (could also be due to me loving BONE).

If you're drawing a tree or something for instance, I'd say to let yourself think of where the light source is roughly and add more detail in the opposite direction to reflect that (here's an example from a tree in one of my comics, actually). A decent amount of detail but still a clear sense of the light source, obviously you'd do more or less on detail depending on what you want to achieve in your style though!

Try to look closer on comics you really like to study the things most readers don't consciously register. I'm still working on this myself and it leads to me spending more time on a page of comics than most people.

Also, how much do you know about composition and perspective? Not knowing nearly as much as I should has caused me to hit walls and spend too long on certain pages, that may be the case with you as well.
>>
>>78215038
Yes, I am. You want to split your readership for some stupid reason, and I'm telling you it's stupid.

This isn't the Skype group, you can't shut me out for not being nice about it.
>>
>>78215084
>split your readership
How do you imagine that works? Explain it in depth.

>This isn't the Skype group, you can't shut me out for not being nice about it.
This is all true, and an excellent point.

But I'm not sure why you're bringing it up with me specifically!
>>
>>78215139

>>
>>78215163
>>78215139

>>
>>78215038

I think what they mean is that you shouldn't split your readership. It's good to reach out on different platforms but your comic should be in one place where you have all the control (and ad revenue).

I've found comics on taptastic but only because the writers/artists advertised on other platforms like tumblr and twitter. It would make more sense to promote yourself on those sites and just direct new readers to your own website.
>>
>>78215017
I actually do have an idea for that part, I just think it's kind of spoilery. It might not end up being the final idea, so I'll just write it out anyways.

The prince's great, great, great Grandfather was alive when magic was still used. He lead a campaign to lock away all of the giant beings, and succeeded. Magic at that time was a very privileged ability. The average person couldn't just go around using it. So, it made it easy for the Grandfather to take magic away and 'lock' it up. Since then, he entrusted the responsibility of keeping the beings locked away to his children, and eventually their children, and so on.

I kind of like this idea because I think it makes the conflict a little more personal for the prince.

>>78215076
>I feel like there's too much here and not enough at the same time..
Yeah, it's really just a general idea, with a few specific ideas right now. I try to make time to work on it when I can. When I'm not working on the two aforementioned webcomics in my first post.
>>
>>78215289
Okay, but don't you think that's still kind of weird? You said the main character was a prince, so shouldn't he know about all this? And what does he have to gain from unlocking the beings? Or why would he? Were they actually peaceful or something?

It just seems like you picked a story formula and then started trying to press things into it.
>>
>>78215289
>>78215338

Or wait, the beings are synonymous with magic? So if the beings are locked up then magic is locked up and no one can use it?

Maybe I'm just not understanding.
>>
>>78215338
>so shouldn't he know about all this?
He's a young prince, and he has an older brother who's set to be king. So, he probably would never have become king anyways. There's really just a small inner circle of people who have access to the information.

Either way, they aren't told that young. Kids have loud mouths.

>And what does he have to gain from unlocking the beings? Or why would he?
He's mainly doing it because they're imprisoned and doesn't think it's right.

>>78215360
Or wait, the beings are synonymous with magic?
They're basically just giant creatures. I wouldn't say monsters. Think Shadow of the Colossus type beings.

Magic is locked/ hidden away so no one has the power to free them.

There were 3 moderators originally.

The one who created the chat, making him the one able to make other mods.

And the people he chose were me and Chickenscratch. The original creator left, taking the promotion power with him. Chickenscratch has been away for a long time now. At one point he was in a car accident even. Now, I don't even know.

If I left the chat, or never used my power again, there would be no one there managing it. 50+ people, without a way to govern anything that ever goes wrong. For the most part I take a very hands-off approach to moderating the chat. Anyone can add. Only I can kick. But anyone who is afraid of me because I might kick them just because I can, has not been paying enough attention; Maybe they've only been there for like a couple weeks and believe all the rumors from posts in the threads like these. You never really know. You certainly don't help, but I understand the thrill of starting rumors about "the other." I'm not upset, I'm just providing context here.

Some guy. With some out-of-the-freaking-sky diatribe about "sandniggers." He's unreasonable and it's not fair to keep that buck. The solution is simple. Kick him. And thank GOSH there's someone who can, because lacking that, you have to rely on the nebulous sense of decency.

Anyone who becomes the sole boss of anything, by any circumstance, is going to get this drama tacked to them like a lamprey. Very simple explanation for it: https://youtu.be/uqNozJpctNo?t=1m55s Of course, I'd rather it not be me. Who needs to get randomly attacked for something like this every day? I'd have passed the mod powers on to someone else if I could, but Skype sucks a fatty and never thought of my situation! But I'd gladly take a little drama, than people having to endure more of that 'sandnigger guy' and people like him.

I'll be screencapping this post. Expect it to be the only response in the future. For you. For anyone.

Started with a fascination for anime and manga that was originally a love for Pokemon, Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and eventually InuYasha.
Fast forward to high school, I was full on weeaboo, Naruto headbands, GaiaOnline threads, and you guessed it, my very own crappy DeviantArt comic.

Over time in high school, I learned that my desires to create manga would never be a success in Japan based on the soul fact that I was not Japanese. Of course, I was already known throughout school as "the guy who draws anime" so I couldn't just stop. I drew to escape from home life issues.

Graduated high school with no other skills than drawing, which even then wasn't good by professional standards, but I was 18 and suffered from "special snowflake-itus." Moved out, got my own place, started drawing for 4chan, /co/, /ic/, /Drawchan/, and came to realize how terrible I actually was.

Started practicing on my own, went to community college and got a degree in Studio Art, developed basic drawing skills, improved some. Most important thing that happened in college was I made a lot of connections with people who believed I can draw. Read a lot of Scott McCloud and Will Eisner's work on comic theory, became a scholar in a field with very few other contemporaries.

Now I'm very well known as a professional in comic theory in my county, started a comics business with my other associates, still working on improving my drawing.

I've been doing this for the past 6 years and it's all I know, and I'd be very scared to NOT do it. I sometimes feel like I've trapped myself because if I dont keep moving forward there is nothing there behind me to keep me going.
Please help me

That's awesome to hear! all of it!
'Zat right? Yeah Sasha rarely does anything anymore. desu I never understood how to write her. She was originally going to be kind of another scrappy kid, then I remembered her brother was a grown-ass adult at 11 so she would be too.. which gave them another sensible adult, except one divorced from polite society, so she's just totally chill. I wanted her to keep doing animal-y stuff like sniffing people and invading their personal space, but I forgot, and Fenrir kinda took care of that. and in battle she was just melee so she had little to do sometimes, I had to write myself notes like "give the giant monster some minions for Sasha and Fenrir to fight". Once I gave her the silk scarves she had something a little more unique.. and soon after the timeskip she had the diablopilo, so that's cool
what I should really probably address is that now that she's pushing 19 she's gotta be past her prime at her aging speed. But how do you write an over the hill werewolf?
Anyway neat to hear you've got an internal powerchart. shit like that pleases me to no end. i CAN say that at the very fucking end i am giving her a super secret awesome upgrade, but there won't be time to enjoy it. that'll be pure fanart fuel. and i have no fucking idea where her future is going or who she's going to end up with or anything.

I'm also curious how Riven slid so far. Buuut it's not a contest I suppose.

>>
>>78217227
It's not that they've gotten bad, but that the others became more relevant in my eyes. Kaen is the father figure of the group, and he does a good job IMO, so he gained points in my book. Mizu would too if he took her role as the mother, but she never does, but I like her post-TS looks the better.
Riven... I dunno, she went from being the gadget-magical-elemental girl to fat jokes and ponchos. It's not bad, it's just not for me I guess.
Kimchi and Hel went really uphill for me, mostly due to their shenanigans. I wasn't fond of them pre-TS, but they grew on me, and now both are really fun to read.
Robin got better to me because now seems like she has a role, that it's not exposition.

yeah Mizu has had a lot less mom-ing to do since the kids grew up. Seems like it was just yesterday I was unintentionally ripping off the 3rd Sailormoon movie by having a pied piper hypnotize all the kids and the adults having to spank them to snap them out of it and then remark on how bizarre that is
for some reason I just wanted Riv to seem more vulnerable. She was a bit of a scaredycat before, with some slight identity issues being a Merculatto, which she worked through.. and then I thought it'd be cute if the brainy one was kinda chubs. but then I just dropped that when she got back into shape and now she's merely the curviest.. so yeah I guess there's less for her to do now other than just be smrt
and yeah god Ribbon was so superfluous but I never minded since she was easy to add to a scene and had her own unique word bubbles.. but having a smart one and a magic one on the team fills her role entirely. In case you were confused, Ribbon was a proper fairy, hence tiny, and Robin's only half fairy so she's just humansized with wings. and if I remembered, she'd always be turning into various random shit or changing size for fun.. but I never remember.
god damn i love talking about my own shit thank you

There's also how webcomics are edition-free. Not that I resent editors, but I despise the idea of content policing like a motherfucker and don't even want to risk it by going out and looking for connections. If I go full /pol/ I don't want to be stopped unless it harms the story.

yknow because joseph told his brothers about how he had this recurring dream that all the celestial objects and breakfast cereals kept bowing down to him, and every time he told them out of sheer 'hey isnt this interesting?' they kept grumbling all 'yeah we get it, god thinks you're hot shit and he's giving you special dreams. or else YOU think you are, and you're telling us this as a taunt' to the point that they eventually wanted to murder the bastard and only cut it back to selling him into slavery and FAKING his death at the last minute
because that's how mary sue stories make people feel
>>

>>78217675

"She has an unusual and dramatic Back Story. The canon protagonists are all overwhelmed with admiration for her beauty, wit, courage and other virtues, and are quick to adopt her as one of their True Companions, even characters who are usually antisocial and untrusting; if any character doesn't love her, that character gets an extremely unsympathetic portrayal. She has some sort of especially close relationship to the author's favorite canon character — their love interest, illegitimate child, never-before-mentioned sister, etc. Other than that, the canon characters are quickly reduced to awestruck cheerleaders, watching from the sidelines as Mary Sue outstrips them in their areas of expertise and solves problems that have stymied them for the entire series."

This is talking about the fanfic version, but it's the same deal. If your character isn't your masturbatory self-insert that solves every problem by just being awesome, you probably don't have anything to worry about. And even if they do, it might not be a bad thing. Just look at Samurai Jack, he's basically a Mary Sue character and people love the fucking guy.

It's all about how it's executed.

I probably talked about this in a previous webcomic thread, but I once had the idea for a comic about two news reporters [one was the actual reporter, the other the cameraman], who would always try to get the inside scoop on the insanely bizarre happen stances that occurred in the city they reported in [and sometimes outside of], but more often than not their own lack of hindsight would get them involved in said event.
The comic would be over the top at times, self aware, or even parody some things [Actually, fun fact: This idea started as a Rec parody]. Sometimes, a huge thing would happen that wouldn't carry over to the next 'arc', ie: the entire city is destroyed but is fine the next arc, etc etc.

The name was Live!, but if I ever redid it, I'd call it "Coming to you, Live!" cause, I dunno. Or "Live from Channel 13", or something. The characters were Steve and Tamara [respectively].

I tried it once, LONG ago, in highschool but it didnt ever go anywhere due to me not liking how I was starting it, so I stopped it and said "Ill do a restart!"... and I never did. I sometimes still draw them, and I've debated going back.

They are animals cause I am terrible at drawing people, originally it wouldn't have much animal people humor, but I may add some if I ever do a reboot of it.

I dunno, what do you think? Also I just drew this picture of them because I haven't drawn them in literally years.

This is for the spirit journey story I posted a while back. The spirits and creatures in the forest are going to based mostly on Eastern mythology.

So, I figured I'd change the protagonist to an Asian girl. This is a shitty quick sketch, she'll look more Asian when I draw her again.

Thanks for your input!
Lucia will keep her goggles and she also has a poncho, that's why she won't have goggles, scarf or jacket in this version. I decided for Jaime, however, to give him a jacket, since Lucia and the chapter one villain will wear ponchos and I didn't want all three main characters to wear ponchos in chapter one, if that makes sense. It also fits Jaime's rogue like personality more, I guess. But I'll consider toning the orange down and giving Lucia smaller eyes is probably not a bad idea - going too much into anime here, haha!

Not the one who started the topic, but I think the guy was referring to sites like Smack Jeeves, Taptastic, Comic Genesis or others.

I used to update my comic in long gone MangaMagazine/InkBlazers besides Smackjeeves, and splitting the audience wasn't good for me, overall watches increased but comments decreased a lot.

Now I have Smackjeeves and my own website that I barely update, but once the new website is up to date, I'm planning on leaving SJ behind and ultimately keep everything on my own website.
>>
>>78218991
Isn't Smackjeeves also a format..? I'm confused how it works.
>>
>>78219085
All the sites I mentioned are free hosting sites for webcomics, not sure if that's what you mean by format.
The reason I originally picked SJ was because they let you customize the whole website, which is great, but non users still see ads among other things.
I'm yet to check out Taptastic, but I'm not sure I want to try another site.

SJ works pretty much like Deviant Art, but only optimized for webcomics. They have a "central Hub" shall we say were you can see latest updates or most popular webcomics, and you can check out profiles for webcomics and authors.

The biggest difference is that you follow works and not authors. It also allows a webcomic to have more than one author, which means groups of artists have an easier time managing the webcomic itself.
It has premium features, and they're not expensive, but ultimately it doesn't do that much for you.

I think bones once accused me of ripping off a character from FLCL, which was super funny because in the very same thread I said that character was designed after Android 18.

I don't get much of that because I normally use modern, urban settings, so I use common clothing you could see anywhere, nothing so characteristic.

I did used designs in previous works based on vidya characters, but I made sure to let everyone know... even though most of them were really obvious like pic related.

Man, seeing it now, it's really embarrassing. If I ever re-do this story, I may do a few more changes on him.

It's important to recall that vampires, first and foremost have been allegories for plutocrats. The super rich.

interesting theory.. I wonder if that holds up to the older myths or only the modern count dracula / lady bathory types.. because older vampires seem to just be a mass of mental disorders and aversions to things known to be healthy (silver is antimicrobial it turns out, as is garlic, and of course running water's gonna be less scummy).. or else related in some way to corpses (especially chinese vampires) being that they lack essential elements of life and try to regain them from the living

>>78219869
That seems like an overly narrow view. Vampires work just as well with themes of rape, addiction, disease and a host of other things as they do with upper class exploitation.
>>
>>78220027
From what I've understood that's a baby vampire bat, and the nose gets more creases as it becomes adult. I think more complicated designs don't work so I'll have to boil it down to something like that. Also I'm not sure if to give them black beads for eyes or go with a more expressive cat-like thing that's still predatory but with a bit of range. I need to have them act a little bit.

>>78220027
I think it depends on the time period and location. If you look at Eastern European vampire tales of the middle ages they often follow the cruel count / countess being absurdly depraved and evil, but vampires are old as dirt and most older stories portray them as evil undead driven by revenge or thirst for murder and sex.

Rape, because you have the money and power to escape the consequences.

Addiction, because the super rich tend to only know "more" and never "enough."

Disease, because greed is one.

Vampires have always been an allegory for the rich. Carmilla, pretty much one of the first named vampires in fiction, was based on Elizabeth Bathory. And my god, have fun reading about what she did.

>>
>>78220280
No, that's not true at all. Vampires were beings that stole 'essence' and life. They took your soul with your blood. They were monsters that lurked in the dark long before they were monarchs and aristocrats.

The fear of the undead rising and stealing the life of the living has been around since long before money was even a concept. It was only within the past two or three hundred years that vampires were associated with the rich, specifically in south-east European countries.
>>
>>78220280

Yeah vampires are just as old as ghosts. Ancient Romans used to put dates on their doorsteps to stop vampires from entering and IIRC there are Chinese vampire stories that are super old.
>>

There were even concepts of them before that in ancient Mesopotamian lore, and records that show the idea had been around since long before that. The guy insisting they're based on the rich seriously needs to go do some research.
>>
>>78220269
Yeah, but he wasn't considered a vampire before modern times and Stoker's book.

>>78220280
Carmilla's less than 150 years old. It's a classic of gothic horror, but it's not all that old in terms of vampire stories.

>>78220307
Bathory wasn't made a vampire before modern vamp fiction either, though. Even the bathing-in-blood myth only painted her as a crazy woman, not somebody with supernatural powers or a deal with the devil.

Nose is much improved.
>>
>>78220269
That's a VERY broad time period; But I think you mean Vlad the Impaler who protected Romania from the Ottomans. That's who Bram Stoker's Dracula is inspired by, as far as I know.
But I THINK the term was first used in the 1700's for some serbian serial killer who may or may not have existed and drank the blood of his victims by hiding in water mills and killing the millers (I was doing some research on Vampires a WHILE ago for my own webcomic.)

No they haven't. That's barely even a modern thing.

People were digging up the recently deceased and driving stakes through their torsos up until about the 19th century, and it almost always corresponded with misfortunes of some kind. Bad crops or disease epidemics. And they always targeted their ow dead as vampires- poor, ignorant, superstitious rural trash.

I'm not quite finished with schooling yet, but the field I'll be entering at the end of it is one where nothing ever really gets better - it's important work for sure, but at best, you can go home at the end of your shift content that things didn't get worse. It was pure libel.

Lovin' this guy.. He's sportin' some kind of a half poncho half cape.. I feel like it's kind of to his detriment, as it covers his neck and chest and shoulders, and then has a longer cape in back.. it feels like it should be either longer overall or shorter in front so it's merely a piccolo-cape. but i love how it seems to be made of reptile hide with an arm and everything, that is great.
Only other thing I would tweak (fuck everyone, thigh belts are cool) is the bare upper arms. Somehow it just doesn't befit an older guy like this. Full sleeves I think would look better.

yeah between that and ancestor worship, people have always been pretty obsessed with death. i'm sure someday people will look back on this era and laugh at how everyone expected technology to make them immortal
funny thing about that ancestor worship, if you look hard enough you find a LOT of the common house-elf stuff to derive from that. Many of them were given epithets one would give to one's respected patriarch, and it would seem whenever people moved into a place, they venerated the first leader of the clan Jebediah Springfield style until his legend evolved into 'there's a little guy in your house that'll help out if you leave him some milk or whatever' and then household gods and all that other stuff.
and it's funny because that's so opposite from the whole typical fairies and elves and nymphs thing being untamed nature, the OPPOSITE of your home, but in fantasy we treat them as being the same things.

Hello, it's me again, continuing with my daily character dump.

Caoimhe is tall, slim and full of positive energy. She started magical fighting only recently, but she finds it really, really fun and she hopes she can make new friends at the beginning of her first high school year.

Caoimhe is supposed to be a shounen manga main character archetype (or at least close to), complete with a bit of tragic past. I'm still thinking how to exactly incorporate it into the story; I'd rather not make her eventual flashback obnoxious or silly. Otherwise I want her to create a contrast for the actual main character posted in >>78205595.

She has an Irish name because I find absolutely hilarious how the letters don't match the pronunciation at all when it comes to traditional Irish names. The jokes are writing themselves. Also freckles. Freckles rule.

As for the technical part, my anatomy is still random so I can't say if that's exactly how I wanted her to look, jaw shape included. She's supposed to be somewhat lanky in the beginning and getting a bit more toned body later on.

>Caoimhe is supposed to be a shounen manga main character archetype
Are you sure you want a female protagonist for a shounen?
>>
>>78229899

So how do you pronounce it?
>>
>>78229899
That front-view nose really isn't working for me.

waifu achieved.
how IS that pronounced? Connie? Irish names are hilarious. Just ask Ewen Cluney

What do you mean? It's been done multiple times already, if that's what you're getting at.

Don't ask me about the family name though, I only know it's English equivalent.

>>78230090
I know, you're not the first person to say this. No wonder really, it's not even a proper nose with the way it's drawn. It's been like that for a long time already and unless I come up with something I really like, I won't change it. Then again her haircut got changed after well over a year, so it's not impossible, ha ha.

>he doesnt read shounen manga with spunky female main characters
do you even live
>>
>>78230257
just add a little upside down triangle or kind of dogdish shape for the undernose bit. then you're fine
>>
>>78230246
Queef-a

Very unfortunate.
>>
>>78225305
Feeling of accomplishment and hopefully some work discipline. I'm also vain enough to enjoy positive recognition if it ever happens.
>>
>>78229899
If you're going for "lanky", I'd narrow the torso a bit, maybe having her ribcage be only 1.5 times the width of her head.

'kipedia says kiva. i imagine it varies.

Does this psychology check out,/co/?
>Child has abusive mother and loving father.
>Mother is emotionally distant and pushes daughter to dominate, tells her to be harder than the world, harder than life.
>Loving father dies, but not before teaching child kindness and love.
>Child grows up outwardly cold and disdainful, but still loves bith her parents and battles feelings of constant inadequacy by a cold veneer of cruelty.
>Deep down, thinks she doesn't deserve to be loved.
>>
>>78231596
psychology isnt real, anon. it's a step above phrenology
in any case, I'm sure this could happen for some people.. but more common would be just hating the one parent and loving the other. though why those two very diffrent parents would get married in the first place i have no idea
>>
>>78231596
It's a plausible outcome. Rather than making her self-loathe I'd make her difficult to get close to, all in all she lost the figure she warmed up to the most.
>>
>>78231731
Lol this guy

>why those two very diffrent parents would get married in the first place i have no idea
It happens way more often than you'd think, hell I think it's the most common scenario though not as extreme as Anon's story.

That's an alternative spelling, not a pronounciation.

>tfw no one reads your web comic
What's the point then?
>>
>>78232508
Improving until they do.
>>
>>78215890
...Tumblr and Twitter? Yes, they're effective but it takes time and work to market yourself. Honestly, you should just look at how other successful webcomic artists are using social media to increase readership. Dumping your comic onto every hosting site available isn't going to do you much good.
>>
>>78232508
Keep plugging away. That's what life is, isn't it? We do what we can until it tears us in half.
>>
>>78232470
how would that be an alternate spelling?
>>
wow new thread time again
get it ready, anon. get the good times rolling. you can do it. it's your time to shine.

Because those are two different ways of spelling the same name?

The name's still pronounced the same way, it's just two spellings. Sean vs. Shawn. Except in this case, neither are phonetic.
