As far as speculation, I think that despite the facade of action and comedy, AT is a sensitive shoegazey show about feels, which attracts girls. In the end it's more about relationships than missions, like even when Finn kicks IK's ass, the show worries about how IK feels and what's really bothering him.

There's "romance" too, but it's mostly so shitty I can't understand why that would be a draw. But it must be -- Burning Low is highest rated episode forever and always. Maybe because girls like romance to be excessively melodramatic?

So yeah, even though Steven Universe is outwardly feminine with its pastel colors and tears and strong independent wimmin, its strong structure, plot, and direction probably appeals to boys. It has romance between Steven and Connie, but it's not melodramatic at all compared to AT -- it's focused on the two of them as an action team.

I find this really hard to believe, kind of sounds like bullshit to me. Maybe you see girls buying more merchandise because girls buy more of that stuff in general. I've met girls and guys that like the show, but it's always the guys that get more into it. They know exactly what's going on in the show right now are into the lore and like the abstract humor. As for Steven Universe it might be just because guys seem to be usually more on time with new series, games, books in general. Girls are usually more extraverted and guys are more introverted and spend more time browsing websites for info on whatever, reddit, 4chan or specific franchise-based sites, you name it. The point is girls would rather spend time on instagram, facebook or twitter. Girls are more social in general so they won't get into a show most of the time until it gets really popular.

I mean, I've had the same experience with anime fans. Guys usually watch tons of anime, have their own mal accounts, know directors, know what's airing this particular season what show aired each year, what influenced what. Girls most of the time are more casual about it. They know only the more popular shows, they like to dress up as characters but might have no idea how many episodes their favorite shows have. They buy pin-ups or other merchendise.

Of course I've met exceptions. Girls with which I can talk about their favorite directors and animators or get into talks about the lore of certain shows etc. And on the other hand guys who are kind of into nerd stuff but don't have much idea about what they are into.

I think the episode was just a metaphor for Finn trying to deal with his insecurity about Flame Princess. It's framed like a fantasy, like he's retreating from reality, so it makes more sense if it wasn't real. Lots of people point that episode out as their favorite and I feel like they must not have thought about how pointlessly cruel and Finn-hating it was.
