Money aside...I would've preferred Father Of The Pride to get an animated series.
>>
>>78014658
I liked the movie. It made me cry a shitload cause I have an extremely overprotective father.

Was tracked during most of school to make sure I didn't get kidnapped or ran off or went with friends without permission. And when I did want to go out with friends they found it to be outside of my character and thought I might be trying to do something unsafe behind their backs.

He cared about me and didn't want me not to get hurt. But I was never really living, I was just not dying.

My life still sucks. Not much has changed even as an adult.

I worked on the show while it was in Canadian production for a few months, I'm really disappointed in it. We only did three episodes before the rest of the show was shipped off to Korea. Also about that time they replaced the current director with Chuck Austen. He had us go back and lobotomize already finished animation, the show was going for a quick snappy style but he had us remove smears because he literally didn't understand them.

From what I heard the episodes sent to Korea were being cut down to about 12 minutes long, which is fine because they were originally were about 22 minutes long and really dragged on. I'm curious if they actually did shorten them or not because either way our episodes were 22 minutes.

>>78015295
Turbo is done in Flash, Peabody and Neighbors from Hell are Toonboom. While we were working on Croods it was being done in Toonboom. These shows all use rigs that help keep costs low and characters on model, even if you can't draw for shit. The Korean animation is hand drawn, and that's where you get the really wonky off model drawings of Eep with the thin line weights.
>>
>>78017619
I'm really sorry, Anon. Your stuff looks like it's got a good grasp on the fundamentals.

The Canadian scenes look like actual animation created by a person.
The Korean scenes remind me of early- to mid-2000s Klasky-Csupo for some reason. Stiff and viscous, without any actual flow between elements.

Like, take 0:44 through 0:46 for example. The motion goes from getting his head bitten to trying to take it off. A logical course of action? Sure. But it feels off. It's like the Korean animators had to meet a time limit and cut out any sort of reaction in-between being eaten and trying to escape.

But that's just me.

What is up with shows switching studios after 3 or 4 episodes? I understand there were cartoons like Tiny Toons where it was made by different studios but at least you can expect a style change whereas with the Croods, you get used to one style only to be confronted with a new one at the worst time. Same shit happened with Star Vs Forces of Evil.

I'd rather have a hand-drawn animation than a Flash (or Toonboom, or whatever) one. IT makes the animation feel more lively and less clunky. It makes even worse that one of your arguments defending Toonboom is that it can be used even by people that can't draw for shit.

I can totally see that the Korean character design sucks, but you gotta admit, it's pretty funny that a Flash animator is dissing hand-drawn animation.

Remember when Mir put detail into their work? Well... they were reports of Bryke telling Mir to cut out the flat Tumblr BS on Korra so yea.

If case you don't remember, Mir signed up for a Dreamworks deal and this is what came out of it.

I'm just curious, why haven't Canadian animation studios ever attempted to try out traditional animation on TV?
>>
>>78025090

What an odd question. I'm pretty sure Canada has done more domestic traditional animation for TV than the US has since the 90s.
>>
>>78025090
They used to, but stopped because it's more expensive, and they're producing these shows to fill some legal quota rather than for quality.
>>
>>78025512
Have they no shame?
>>
>>78025566

>>
>>78025588

Like, I'm not trying to be festicious here there are some good niche uses for Toonboom tweening in depending on the style.
>>
>>78025512
>>78025566

That legal quota keeps animation studios and and jobs inside Canada, at least. Don't you see the irony of discussing what Canadian and Korean studios ought to be doing for a supposedly "American" show?
>>
>>78025648
I don't think it's inherently superior. Motorcity and Turbo Fast are both Flash, and Wander Over Yonder and Star Vs. are both Toon Boom, and those four shows are some of the most well-animated TVs shows there's been since the early '90s.
>>
>>78025715
So, what you're saying it that tweening animation is superior then. :T
>>
>>78025766
No, I'm saying skilled animators are superior.

The people at Titmouse and Mercury do better work than both most traditional and most other Flash animation.
>>

>>
>>78026055
Have you watched those shows? They have an excellent grasp on animation principles, and the movement is much more lively and believable.
>>
>>78022857
>>78023068
I'm not dissing hand drawn animation, I'm dissing the Korean animation. I'd prefer hand drawn above all else but lets face it, there aren't a lot of people out there willing to pay for that anymore. Its much more cost effective to tween the shit out of something than it is to put together a team of people who actually know to draw.

>>78025090
Studios make what the client pays for. In this case Dreamworks wanted snappy cartoony animation with a Flash-y style, so that's what we made. The current trend that seems to be going around lately is to make a show in Toonboom to save costs, but then try to mimic hand-drawn. You get stuff like Jake and the Neverland Pirates that way. It doesn't look terrible, just leaves you wondering why they needed to complicate things instead of hand drawing it.
>>
I was excited when I heard this announced after I saw the Croods. I loved the movie. I saw the thumbnail and went "crap". I saw the trailer and said "fuck". I have little to no hope for this project, and it seems like just a generic flintstones kids cartoon. It doesn't even look or sound nice from what I've seen, but I'll still be giving it a watch before I actually judge it. I'm going into with no expectations of quality.

Why did they do to Eep? My Waifu...
>>
>>78026105
I'm beginning to doubt you even work for a Canadian animation studio, where's your proof?
>>
>>78026108
You actually have a point. Even that new Lion Guard show had this hand drawn-esque style in the animation. Which is why I think Mercury Filmworks is a better canadian animation studio.
>>
>>78026055

Not that guy, but good animation isn't just high frames. Personally that's the last thing I look at, and it's also pointless in the age of digital animation.

There needs to be good acting. The animation should accentuate the keyframes. It should convey a sense of physics and force through timing, even when heavily stylized. For example, there's a clarity and snap to the Mercury episodes of Star Vs that's missing in the later episodes. Not everyone picks up on it or care, but animators do.

The animation part of Steven Universe is often utilitarian, when they're not heavily borrowing from something else. What SU does have is great, fantastic art direction.
>>
>>78025766

I remember the producers had plans to make a season-long arc for Puss in Boots, but later changed their minds and did comedic one-offs instead.

Also, All Hail King Julien has a LOT of recurring villains.

So, those two have flirted with being action cartoons.

Admittedly, it would probably be off-putting to try and do a season long arc small chunks at a time.

>>78026108
At least in my process the cleanup and tweening are easily the most time consuming stages but the rough animation itself is rather quick. The best compromise was to use tween'd rigging over hand-drawn rough animation, that way to movement and design still feels traditional but I'm not burning hours making sure each line is in the right place on every frame.

> Le Flash is Trash Meme

There's great shows in Flash. You just don't realise it's Flash because they're actually good, or if you do you choose to ignore it.

It's like when people complain about all CGI in movies, it's only because they've noticed the bad stuff, simply because it's near impossible to notice the great stuff.
