So if Tavros and Eridan both had reached their full potential, who would have been more powerful? There's been a lot of lipservice to Page powers but to be honest I think Eridan would come out on top; the only time we've actually seen those tremendous powers get used is by a Hope player (an aspect that's also received a lot of lip service), and Hope!Eridan seemed pretty damn powerful even when not GT while he was in that showdown with Sollux.

As someone who made a majority of current friends in middle school over Homestuck, its good for what it is (or was per se).
It works on the concept of a funny comic with relatable and natural characters, set in a solidly built universe. Hussie tried to exceed what HS could handle by making it the socio-mind-fuck of universal and multi-universal proportions and it begins to fade. I stopped at Act 6 because it drags, its no longer a fun roller coaster its just a pull to the top with no foreseeable plummet back into action and adrenaline.

These are all OBVIOUSLY references to the kids as they exist in the present-tense, as teenagers. Eridan refers to them as being pink as babies, but otherwise Gamzee, Karkat and Vriska are all talking about fully mature, non-infant people as being pink.

How fucking new? are you. One of the big things of Homestuck is to take plenty of silly joke and turn them into something much more important.

Its the comic that took an eviscerated doll and turned it into a destroyer of the universe.

They are still joke and should still be taken as such. that doesn't forbid them from becoming more later.

Except not at all. It is and has always been important for the development of Dave. It was always important, and leaving it unaddressed would have been a big hole in the writing.

The convo beween Dirk and Bro is one of the most touching in the comic.

It is a joke and it is important too. One does not forbid the other. One of the core component of humor is an help to cope with bad situation.

Look, I'll be the first to admit that there is so much evidence and little cues that Dave was gay, you could paint a ghetto with it in rainbow colours. His very first conversation with Tavros and his "I love him" comment towards John made it strikingly obvious.

That doesn't make the development really fucking stupid. It's not really funny, it isn't even a joke.

John and Rose's parents dying off-screen brutally and yet being treated as a casual thing is a joke. Jane losing her shit to Caliborn's harassment, all of the kids going Trickster, even their sappy spoon croon on the quest beds together was all played like a bad joke. Even half the shit that Vriska does amounts to a gag, from berating herself, to building herself up and having it end in her usual egotism and tantrums. Those had clear deliveries and humorous payoff.

But Dave COMING OUT and having an intense emotional conversation with Dirk, that wasn't played for laughs at all. He played that one completely straight, as much as his brother being an Abuser. No gags about floppy weiners or how his brother mistreated him had a silver lining, it was just straight up whining.

It wasn't much of a joke, and until we see the payoff of how Dave being abused by Bro ends up being important, it's pretty dumb.

It's kind of like all the incest innuendo Dave makes. Did you know he makes a lot of that? Probably as much as him being gay. But if we had a serious conversation and introspective moment where he confronts his desire to fuck Roxy or his sister, it'd be weird and creepy as shit. Sure there'd be a backing and precedent for it, but it'd still be way stupid.

You know why? They all got over it and none of them took it dead seriously. The only reason people take Dave's treatment with any austerity is because it was shown in the comic that he's still sore about it. No one that cares about him being abused by Bro seems to be demanding that Rose confront her mother's alcoholism or John's Dad's neglect.

I am stopping you right now and I don't think I should bother reading the rest.

Dave MAYBE turning bi, is not the development I am talking about.

I am talking about first and foremost about his relationship with his brother and how he perceive hiumself, what it means to him to be a hero, what he want to become later on. How he grew up to relalize he was trying to stuck to an ideal he didn't really believe and that all in all was his Brother/father, a man he realize was an awful person he has grew to despite.

And he has to reconcile that notion with liking himself for who he is, while also accepting that Bro was a bad person, wile at the same time acknowledging he was trying to be like him is an huge part for Dave.

That's the center and heart of his two convos with Dirk and it turn out into Dave being happy to finally having a bro he can love that is a decent person: Dirk.

That Dave might come out is only a very small part of all this and of actual minor importance.

It can almost be considered as an aftermath: Dave having finally found out a real Bro worth of loving, ask him for little real life tips, as a bro would actually help out.

Dave maybe coming out wasn't played at all. It's barely an opening for the next conversation, in no way a conclusion.

And those two convos were loaded with small jokes everywhere.
