How much Weeaboos are the creators of this?
>>
Don't use words you don't know the meaning of.
>>
Japanese influence in western animation is inevitable since each generation brings in new people into animation, and Japanese animation is still pretty much better than the west.
>>
>>78001540
I remember Alex Hirsch saying that the creator of Star Vs. liked pretending to be Sailor Moon a lot.
>>
>>78001540
The creator was a huge fan of Sailor Moon and other anime like Utena and Unico as a kid and teenager, but doesn't really come off as a weeaboo in the sense of wishing to be Japanese or only watching anime or something.

Apparently she tells the storyboarders/designers on her crew to watch Unico because she likes it so much, and maybe to draw some influence from it, but it doesn't seem like most of those responsible for actually writing/drawing the show like anime more than the average person.

>>78001715
Never heard of this, but she said she spent a lot of her childhood wishing her cat would talk to her.
>>
>>78001540
Not as much as you'd think

More or less this.
We've gone from animators that have never seen Japanese cartoons, to animators that maybe saw some Astro Boy or Starblazers, to people today where easy access to manga and anime were a fact of life growing up.
>>
>>78002368
yeah and astroboy totally wasn't influenced by western animation of the golden age
it's a circle

The creator herself kind of confirmed this. Apparently her imagination used to get the better of her during her high school years.

This generation of animators grew up during a short window of time when anime was more abundant on TV than new cartoons, and manga took up 3 shelves in bookstores. They are not the same people who traded tape recordings from satellite TVs. These are not the people who formed clubs. Nefcy is not the guy who would stay in the back corner of Suncoast looking for Softcel videos on sale.

Not being elitist about this in any way, I just think these are very different peoples. For people like her, Sailor Moon wasn't Japanese animation, it was a cartoon on TV, and she's just regurgitating her childhood now.
>>
>>78001540

Because western animation is predominately incapable of make fanbases, meanwhile weeaboos have 25 years of experience in fanbases.

The most popular cartoon icons are: rat, bunny, duck and ponies. Most creatons take anime ideas because they hate furryshit

anon that's harsh
>>
>>78004255
Ponies are still niche. Characters like Dennis the Menace, Betty Boop, and Bart Simpson have a far greater cultural imprint than MLP.
>>
>>78001540

Japanese animation stopped being relevant after the 90s, besides Ghibli and some artsy stuff. And now Ghibli is broke.

Anyway, the current generation of western animators were inspired by the anime boom
>>
>>78001607

Maybe writers and designers but the actual animation is usually outsourced to korea for a lot more shows than I thought. dunno about star vs though.
>>
Star is basically a magical girl adapted to the American audience. It's funny how the west is making new magical girls while Japanese little girls don't care anymore
>>
>>78004497

even pooh and hobbes were animals though
>>
>>78004856

aren't magical girl shows predominately action based, with her saving the day? Star seems more like slice of life than maho shojo. guess it depends whether you focus on the characters or the story.

Magical girls were slice-of-life with some magic for decades, until Sailor Moon arrived and made millions on merchandise. Everyone wanted to make another SM so the genre shift to action/adventure. Nevertheless there were still some old school magical girls made after SM, like Card Captor Sakura.

Eventually the genre was ruined by Precure and shoujo mangakas refusing to make new magical girls in favor of domestic violence

Ponies have a entire board, /mlp/ and a lot of ponie-cons.
>>
>>78001607
Animation wise? yes.

Writing and overall quality? Fuck no, not even close. Anime is fucking retarded and it panders to the mentally challenged who happen to have their hands on their dicks.
>>
why are the main characters of this show so fucking bland?
why is everything in this show so fucking bland
>>

shit, i miss the time we had actual cartoons
>>

Maybe it's not a parody but an alternate rendition.

>"anime died after the 90s"
this thread is a bait shop
>>
>>78008242
It's really not a parody.

There are maybe 2/3 elements of the magical girl aspect that are obviously influenced by anime (throughout the course of the entire series so far, not like once an episode), but even those come off more as references/tributes than making fun of anime. For the most part, the few times the show actually acts like a mahou shoujo series it plays it completely seriously.

>Not being elitist about this in any way, I just think these are very different peoples. For people like her, Sailor Moon wasn't Japanese animation, it was a cartoon on TV, and she's just regurgitating her childhood now.

Pretty much this. Me and Nefcy are around the same age. I remember anime being on the Saturday morning cartoons and such. So it's just from our childhood.
>>
>>78005973
Yes, and? You do understand that 'popular culture' operates on a level above what is merely popular with a specific group of people, right? Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny are iconic because people who haven't seen any cartoons of theirs in decades or at all still know who they are.
