I don't have too much of a problem with the way it ended. I thought it was very French and very fitting. That being said, I would very much prefer a happy ending for Blanche. She's so pure and earnest, even with her faults- of which there are many- I can't bring myself to dislike her.

The ending is more than just a "to be continued" and can easily act as a completed ending just not a happy one and it's very open ended. The truth of the matter is that there probably wouldn't be a good or satisfying end to Blanche's story because that isn't the point of the comic as a whole. It's a sad ending that gives Blanche the shaft just like a lot of the story did. I'm not saying that the point of the story is "Fuck Blanche" but some people's stories have bitter, unmagical endings and if the comic ended on Blanche's mom stealing her stuff and Blanche in a bad situation then it's an ending consistent with the tone of the book.

I dunno, after Blanche figured out how killed her sister, it seemed like the next major thing she needed to do was figure out how to get out of the prostitution biz. But we never find out if she does or not.

It'd be like if the story ended without Blanche exposing her sister's killers and just stopping when she got kidnapped.

The difference is that she set out from the get go to find her sister's murder, that was the point of it all, part 2 was not expressly about her leaving the biz on any level near part one being about her solving her sister's murder. Yes we want to see her leave the business but that was not really the plot of part 2 as much as part 2 was about what happened next and the fact of the matter is that what happened next was shit and then we don't know what happened. It's not an ending full of catharsis no but it's a good ending.

While you are entitled to your opinion I wouldn't call this art style cartoony, it's really trying more to invoke old french ads more than anything and even if you don't like it it is far from Shitty, Kerascoet is one of the best art duos in comics today and their usage of paneling and the emotional weight they can put on a simple art style is very impressive. My dad was cheating on my mom with this one woman who would make him teas made of daturas.

Before my mom and I knew about it we noticed he would act strange sometimes and that he got more quiet and was turning into a different person as the years went by.

Eventually my mom found out he was cheating, they divorced, etc... Dan Dashly, you are absolutely right about this ending. Having just marathoned the whole addicting read (it's now 5 in the morning, who needs sleep?) I was overjoyed with the ending -not because my heart didn't break for blanch, but because the writing was so damn solid.

"A thousand torments". Absolutely brilliant.

To all of you anons saying the ending is abrupt or "weird" -please take the time to treat yourself to foreign (as well as classic) cinema and expand your notion of what an "ending" is.

Watch "My Life as a Dog" or even "Blue is the Warmest Color". The story sticks with you despite the sad/abrupt ends. It's a culture thing and it's absolutely wonderful once you learn to embrace it.

I think if you look at Kerascoet's work on the whole their work is best described as being "cartoony". Which, despite what some may think, is in many ways harder to do successfully than "realism"/naturalism/classicism. It's obviously they can draw "realistically" from Beautiful Darkness but to me proper comics (and by extension "proper" cartooning strips down the world into it's simplest, or most economical form. What's that quote from Count of Monte Cristo about (and I'm paraphrasing here) "all art aims to attain a state of simple directness"? Well, to me, that's cartooning. People who draw comics from other people's scripts are comic artists, there's always been an apparent different, there's a quote from Charles Schulz saying the same thing.
If you're into comics as a medium, not just one or two genres I recommend (not you, Mr. Dashly) Ivan Brunetti's little book "Cartooning In Philosophy & Practice" it's kind of a modern version of those old Famous Artists Course but condensed down...economically. Okay, off soapbox. P.S--I don't mean to sound patronising but I know I sometimes DO, so sorry if any of this has come across that way.
