I have my reasons. We're going to live in a mansion.....and then we're going straight to hell.
>Chuck Austen's Uncanny X-Men - Day 4: 428 - 434 The Draco
>Art: #428 Sean Phillips, #429 - #433 Philip Tan, #434 Takeshi Miyazawa
Here it is friends. The centerpiece of Chuck Austen's run. Sean Phillips was a good choice for the opening epilogue, and I'm enjoying looking at Tan's art a lot more today than I did when I read this for the first time at age 16.
Otherwise, this arc is just.....man. It's the culmination of a lot of the threads Austen has been "building" since #410. So, it's more of the same, in the worst way possible, but cranked up to 11.
Brace yourselves. And please bump if you're reading. Or just bump to complain even if you're not reading. I don't care.

Me too, along with X-Treme X-Men.
I loved New X-Men, really enjoyed X-Treme X-Men, and even liked Uncanny X-Men at points.
Guess I'm just easy to please.
>>77954730
I'm a fan of X-Treme, it's just so divorced from the rest of the x-continuity. I almost feel like X-Statix is more in-tune with the rest of the line than X-Treme.

very interesting characterization for a pre-reveal Xorn. I think the reveal was either the same month as this issue, or the next one.
>>77954784
I just thought it was normal, 2 books at Xavier's, mostly, and then 1 book as a sort of an adventure book.
I had no clue about satellite "books" back then.
>>77954862
My feelings are definitely colored by interviews with Claremont I've read, etc.
The 2 "core" books and an "adventure" team does kind of make sense though, especially since X-force was no longer "that" book.
But it's telling that NONE of the X-Treme cast makes an appearance during any of this. Storm, Bishop, etc are clearly off-fucking-limits to anyone not Chris.

Meant to put the " " on satellite, not sure how I screwed that up, lol.
>>77954933
I never read interviews back then(still don't, heh), but from what I've heard since then Claremont seemed to want to be far removed from the other books, is that true?
>>77955021
He was offered the choice of Uncanny X-men, and to play ball with Morrison, or a third "new" core title that was just his. He chose the "third core/new" title.
Also he had big plans for Beast, and Morrison swiped him. This is why Beast is in the very beginning of XX and then it's like "Oh shit secondary mutation bye bye Beast." So, yeah. He wanted to play by himself.
>>77955097
He strikes me as that kind of guy, not that it's an overly bad thing.
Would have been cool to see Claremont and Morrison working together, but hey, I still enjoyed what we got.

The worst part is, the whole 'poisoned communion' storyline wasn't called 'Weapons of Mass Destruction'.
I may condense this all into one storytime tomorrow. I'm not sure. There are 9 issues left.
Trial of Juggernaut (2 issues)
She Lies with Angels (5 issues)
Of Darkest Nights (2 issues)

Who's been around since day 1? Comments on the artists? The plot?
Austen isn't a bad technical writer. I like the way he builds up his cast of characters. There's no visible mary sue or waifu. Angel comes close, as he's the closest thing to a protagonist the Austen run has. Otherwise, everyone has had some decent development.
Austen's IDEAS on the other hand....hit or miss.
Tomorrow begins Larroca's tenure on Uncanny, as well as the end of the Morrison era and start of the Whedon era on the flagship. X-Treme ends and Claremont begins Excalibur and takes over Uncanny. Austen and Larocca move over to (New) X-Men. Whedon begins Astonishing.
But first, we've got some continuity house keeping to do. Tomorrow we wrap up Austen's run.
Also this is one of my favorite X-Men covers ever.
>>77957767
>no visible mary sue
I'd say Nurse Annie comes close.

See, he understands that a lot of X-Men is soap-opera relationship drama...but he keeps going into trashy reality show relationship drama.
>>77957960
Absolutely. I hate to say that this is the kind of thing the Comics Code might have actually helped....but I wonder if keeping relationships within the confines of "daytime tv appropriate" is what kept it from being kind of lurid and trashy, especially given the shallow way with which Austen plays it. He gives the characters big theatrical emotions, but does it in a way that makes them seem like horny teenagers.
>>77957767
I think what makes me angriest is just how insanely uneven the entire story is. It's not even from issue-to-issue ot page-to-page, like from fucking panel-to-panel it can go from something genuinely sweet to eye-rending soap opera melodrama.
I can't say I flat-out hate the run so far(though The Draco comes closest, that was nonsense on a grand scale) but I can't say I'm enjoying it, and it comes out as this misaimed puddle of poor execution.
I'm glad for the storytime though, I've heard tales of terror about the Austen run and it's fascinating to read though it. It's an interesting failure if nothing else.
>>77957937
>Nurse Annie
She's less of a Mary-Sue and more some kind of bizarre hanger-on. I'm not even sure why she's still in the story after she got her husbando, and if they want to make Carter important they need to give him some kind of actual characterization and something to do.

Thanks for posting the archive links. I've been a day behind for each.
Started out really strong in the first thread. Day 2 wasn't too bad either, other than maybe Lobo. I liked the manga style art for Paige at least.
Day 3 was fucking painful. Jean's hair being colored green. Paige's shirt disappearing for a panel. That entire arc with the religious zealots. Bridezilla.

>>77957767
Thanks for uploading OP. The only parts I have enjoyed so far was the juggernaut/squidboy storyline, yandere polaris and any parts with husk. Everything else feels forced and very melodramatic. It IS very sexualised like I've heard before which is something I usually appreciate but it feels kinda out of place here. I'd also like to note that Austen attempts many times to engage in religious concepts which at first is compelling to a religious reader such as myself but his utter lack of knowledge of the religions and discussed and an obvious lack of understanding of the religious mindset has resulted in abysmal stories. Azazel storyline was alao entire pointless.
The art has been mostly terrible so far too.
>>77969065
Damn, sorry for the typos, damn phone.
>>77954098
why am I reading this again drunk
>>77969065
>>77969160
Agree with most all that. The religious stuff is really clumsy. Otherwise, I think Austen's Northstar characterization is pretty good.
>the art
The art isn't terrible as much as it's just bland (Phillips and Garney), or it's stylized enough to not really fit the tone of the book (Tan and Asamiya).
Oddly enough, the Larocca stuff coming up is the best fit. It perfect for the mid-tier soap opera silliness of the run. Pic related.
>>77967060
>>77969065
>wonky art
The schedule on this book is insane. It double shipped most months. It's easy to see why Garney was the only one that would do two arcs in a row. Tan's work really grew on me. This anon knows what's up >>77968673. Tan is somewhere on the Silvestri-Liefeld "Heavily inked, exagerated bodies" comic book art spectrum and I think Juggernaut, Havok and Polaris particularly look great under his pen.
>>77957280
Never been a fan of She-Hulk books, but she is always entertaining when she shows up in others.
>>77969827
She's great as a "feature" of the Marvel universe. This is pretty much exactly the right amount of She-hulk for me. She's doing wacky single female lawyer shit, and also driving trucks into Juggernaut. 'Nuff Said.
I liked austens run more than fraction, bendis or hopeless' xmen
