Why do absurd subplots like the sugar pile in Lisa's Rival still amuse while equally-absurd shows like Family Guy are so unfunny?

Is it just nostalgia?
>>
Probably execution. I love absurd subplots in American dad
>>
>>77947687
No it's just because autists hate family guy and whorship simpsons...

> Autistst watching the frank grimes episode of the simspons: Ha ha ha this is so dark but funny blablabla talent and creativity blablabla plot blablabla obviously a good show because most people think that
> Autists watching regular FG episode where a gag is trash ON FUCKING PURPOSE: THIS IS AWFUL ! THIS SHOW ITS THE WORST THING EVER !! everyones hate that so i hate that too ! blablabla characters are dicks blablabla no shipping and serious romance for writing my gay fanfics blablabla is bad because its offensive
>>
Execution. The sugar pile has magnificent bits like the Adam West beekeeper and Homer's "city fathers" speech.
>>
>>77947687
Why did the tea drinker spit the tea when it rained and the sugar pile melted?
>>
>>77947781
>Homer's "city fathers" speech.

Don't forget the excellent animation during said speech. God I miss hand drawn animation. Fuck this computerized shit.
>>
>>77947687
Animation can mean the difference between a joke landing or being weak.

Old Simpsons had good animation with timing, fluidity and heart.

Modern Family Guy and Simpsons look like they're animated by robots; everything is stiff, stilted and perfunctory. So the jokes (despite generally being weaker anyway) fall flat.

It's the same reason Hotel Transylvania is an alright movie despite starting Adem Sandler and generally meh writing. The animation is so good it makes it work.

Although I won't say this isn't also in effect.

Nobody wants to laugh at modern simpsons.
>>
>>77947687
The Simpsons were always sincere and genuine rather than sociopathic and there were grounded consequences for their actions.

Think like King of the Hill. King of the Hill isn't totally off the walls, it just uses the benefit of animation to do things and explore scenarios that would be harder to pull off in a live action sitcom.

So when things start getting a little more surreal, Homer working for a Bond villain or using radiation to grow a tobacco/tomato hybrid, the escalation is part of the joke.

Family Guy already exists in an anything-goes universe. Talking dog, psycho baby, God and Jesus regularly interact with Earth. The absurdity gag doesn't work because everything's already weird.
>>
>>77949141
>using radiation to grow a tobacco/tomato hybrid

It tastes like grandma!
>>
>>77947943

rain water got into his tea?
>>
>>77947738
This, there's a fine line when dealing with wacky plots that can give you in either something surreal or uncanny.
>>
>>77947687
the absurd bits in family guy are usually the most enjoyable parts
>>
I love absurd subplots when they're done right.
>>
>>77949819
Defend this then.

>Homer working for a Bond villain...the escalation is part of the joke.
That episode played it fuckking perfectly.
>>
>Decided to look up this scene
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-UwhmSIZzg
>tfw If this scene was done in a modern episode, Homer's rant would have been one still shot with him standing in one place occasionally moving.
No love in animation anymore.
>>
>>77948067
>It's the same reason Hotel Transylvania is an alright movie
It's not and /co/ only acknowledges its existence because waifus
>>
>>77951378
I'm gay and I don't give a shit about waifus. It's a good movie and Genndy Tartakovsky is a master at his craft.

>>77947687
because its actually funny.
>>
>>77947687
Because family guy tries to hard to be offensive.
>>
>>77947687
Because writing/dialogue, voice acting/direction, animations and context all play a part in whether something is funny or not.
>>
>>77949341
That episode was crap though.

Friendly reminder
>>
>>77947687
I don't know about you, but I never found the sub-plots themselves funny. The jokes coming FROM the sub-plots were hilarious, but the stories were always just narratives and nothing more - whether it's Simpsons, Family Guy, or Rick & Morty.
>>
>>77947687
Because it's not mean-spirited like Family Guy's humour and actually adds to the story/plot.
>>
>>77955203
Holy crap, that's obscene!

Ugh!

Like, they couldn't even put work into the bloody opening?!

(Dear god, can you imagine if Do The Bartman was animated today?)

>>
>>77956769
You do realize that Brad Bird aka The Incredibles and Ratatouille director was the one behind Do The Bartman? If he was still in charge in modern day? It would be a good CGI richly animated piece.
>>
I never understood this: When the sugar is melting, the Englishman spat it out. Why? What is the joke there?
>>
>>77964838
Yeah but why? whats so surprising about melting sugar?
>>
>>77965429
He's upset that it's disappearing.
>>
FG's subplots used to be pretty decent, and I think the show got worse as the outlines got thinner and the backgrounds turned into gradient shit similar to a kid using Photoshop for the first time. The old Simpsons had some pretty well-written ones, too, and they were treading some new ground at the time.

>>77955203
Cans Without Labels is looking pretty good.

>>77947778
>people with this opinion I just created a rant and straw man about are autistic because they don't find purposeless irony funny
Do you perhaps write a webcomic?

Is he implying his brother-from-an-other-mother eats white people?
>>
>>77972316

you must not have a lot of friends with that kind of humor huh
>>
>>77949141
I was thinking about this today. If modern Simpsons made the Grimey episode it would be shit even if it was exactly the same. Frank Grimes worked because the Simpsons had never done anything like it before
>>
>>77947943
The sugar was legitimately terrible.
>>
>>77974799
I still feel like the argument that the Grimes episode was the beginning of the end for Homer's character has some serious legs.

Like he never quite got back from the depths of stupid he reached in that episode, which focused around a lie that Homer wasn't treated like shit by everyone around him.
>>
>>77972316
no man brother just likes a ritz.
>>
>>77948219
I have to be honest, there was a modern simpsons on in the background and i heard some stupid joke and I actually laughed.
>>
>>77961360
Serious question: how old are you?

That joke is literally just "lol so randum", there's nothing else to it.
>>
>>77947943
I lways wondered that aswell
Just the fat guy hugging sugar shocked him i guess
>>
>>77949981
Thats amazing compared to modern episodes
>>
>>77949141
>The absurdity gag doesn't work because everything's already weird.

it worked for the first 3 seasons, but the characters weren't as batshit then
>>

man that body language is fantastic
