But it's been a long time since MoS, and in that time the brand loyalists have been forced to latch onto the grim&gritty and make it into feature instead of a flaw because it's the main difference between them and Marvel.

Basically they've spent a few years trying to convince themselves that quips and camp are evil and now they've having it shoved back in their faces.

It's called atmosphere. When you have one inside the other it doesn't fit, unless it's a dark comedy, which requires above standard writing.
