Seen a lot of the old Dark Horse stuff posted here lately, thought I'd post some issues of the new Darth Vader series from Marvel, which I think is actually very, very good. Let's read and discuss!
>>77936963
This is my first storytime, so let me know if I'm fucking it up somehow.
>>77936963
i've been wanting to read these, so i'll be here for sure.
Book acts as a sister storyline to the main Star Wars book by Jason Aaron. You don't have to read that to understand this one, though. They are crossing over now, unfortunately...

Have to admit: was not a huge fan of the call back to ROTJ opening the series.

>>77937145
On the other hand...
>>77937155
>>77937168
I think the Dark Horse stuff and some of the old EU got pretty far away from what was recognizably SW.
>>77937181
>>77937194
All the Marvel stuff so far has felt very of a piece with the OT.
>>77937210
>>77937148
A lot of the book is Vader politicking (his version of politics, anyway). It's something we rarely saw and yet its very enjoyable.

Yes and no. I'm of the generation that spent more formative years with Tie Fighter and Dark Forces than Prequels and Clone Wars, so Star Wars means a very different thing to me than what is actually "Star Wars."
>>77937210
Gillen somehow reconciles the Anakin of the prequels with the Vader of the OT in the voice he gives the character. I love it. It actually feels like he's adding to Star Wars, whereas Aaron's book feels like pure fanservice.
>>77937452
>>77937465
>>77937486
>>77937462
Agreed. I want so badly to like "Star Wars," and while it gets the characters mostly right (except for how Chewie keeps getting his ass kicked for some reason), the plot is a means to stage fan-service-y setpieces.

>Kanan
>Princess Leia
>>77938484
Psycho 3PO and weapon R2 shouldn't work, but they mostly do.
>>77938500
>>77938489
I don't think any are bad, per se. I've read an issue or two of Kanan and they seemed well-done, especially if you're into the Rebels cartoon (I haven't seen it, so I have no context for him as an adult and am generally less interested).
I'm storytiming Vader because I think it's excellent. The main title had a good first arc, but I think #'s 8-12 were quite bad, actually.
Princess Leia has art by the Dodsons, so I never considered reading it....
>>77938484
It's like HK being back with us. Like a Christmas miracle!
>>77938556
Main problem with the SW books is that Marvel's greed wouldn't even let them finish a whole year's worth of stories before making the main books (SW and Vader) crossover.
>>77938587
Think of it this way: Gillen wasn't even allowed to write his OC's for ten issues before having to hand them off to Aaron. Marvel doesn't let creators just do their books without interference form the rest of the line. Main reason for tripidation going forward, because except for some janky fanservice from Aaron, Marvel's SW books have been very high quality and with only the best talent attached.
>>77938607
Man, these Captcha's are getting me down. Storytiming is a slog. You guys still reading, though? If the force is with us, Vader will continue.
>>77938629
You can switch over to the legacy captchas, they are way easier imo
>>77938629

Biopunk stuff showed up a lot in the EU that got tossed out I think.
The new Star Wars stuff from the past few years has slowly been pulling in more stuff from the old EU.
Recently Rebels reintroduced the Interdictor-class Star Destroyers which are pretty much necessary if we're to believe the Empire can keep rebel ships from escaping during the battle of Endor.

I don't really like Rebels. Season 1 was solid in story but season 2 goes from good to shit too much. More episodes means more filler I guess. While I find Kanan an annoying character I like his younger personality in the comic more. And it's technically more clone wars and I can't argue with that.
It very rarely shows the present with the other rebels characters so it's a fresh story that moves away from the OT which all the other comics are fixated on.
Looking forward to Obi&Ani in Jan. Shame it's only a miniseries :(

>>77939625
>>77939635
>>77939607
Drawing the actors' faces from the movies always comes out weird in these series.
The Kanan series seems to have better art than some of the other series since there are no faces to re-draw of real life people.

>>77937048
I enjoy SW, but I wouldn't concider myself a fan of it.

>Any EU people know if the Genoshans were always portryaed outside AOTC as having a Queen a la ants/Xenos
That is from TCW and probably something Lucas himself personally put in there.
>>77939912
It'd be weird if you didn't. It's honestly a chilling scene. It's the exact moment Vader goes from Whiny Anakin Bitch to Empire's Darth Vader of Supreme Asskicking.
>>77939001
>>77939954
Yeah, TCWs had an arc about them retaking Geonosis since the queen can stick larva into other living things' brains and control them like meat puppets.
Once they found out about that, they didn't lose the planet a second time.
>>77938489

shit yeah tie fighter and dark forces. you've taste and are my kind of star wars fan.
>>77938489
Honestly I've only picked up Star Wars both issues #1 & #2 and I really liked both of them. The story begins just a few hours after the deathstar blowing up.
My brother bought the first issue for Darth Vader and we both enjoyed it. As you can see it's very entertaining
>>77942033
Eh? No it doesn't.
Princess Leia picks up a few hours after the Death Star blows up. Star Wars is set at least a few months afterward, with smaller tie-in novels in between.
>>77938972

i can't get into rebels art style and characters seem pretty shit in comparison to clone wars. also those lightsaber designs are deplorable.

They literally went and found the original ANH lightsaber designer to get it exactly how it was in ANH.
>>77939665
It really bugs me that the first panel is traced from ROTS
>>77942298
like the weird rapier designs? tonally they do not mesh well with the rest of the series.
>>77942362
Do you seriously not remember how they were in ANH? That is exactly how they looked there.
I've been trying to find that youtube video where they show exactly how they hunted down the original ANH designer just to get the effect exactly right.
>>77942385

>>77941526
Maybe.
Though his death happening at the hands of the rebel army seems equally likely just to show the gap between him and Vader.
>>77936963
>which I think is actually very, very good. Let's read and discuss!
You should read Kanan
>>77938607
There should have been a bit with
>Hm, you've already explored clones as an option?
>Clones can be...compromised.
>>77937048
To a degree, but mostly because of the space battles. Honestly, the sudden focus on Jedi has always been an issue with me. Give me a nice B-Wing or bounty hunter, and I'll be cool.
>>77937048
Honestly? I like it but I'm not really in love with it the way everyone else seems to be.
The high point of Star Wars was Gennedy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series imo. And I *guess* the OT as well.
>>77939476
Ackbar-Grievous? Holy shit!
>>77937048
it's one of the thousands of stories I've learned and liked.
If I seem to read more Star Wars compared to say Punisher or Gundam it's because of the sheer enormity of the Star Wars franchise.
>>77946495
>high point of Star Wars was Gennedy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series
Not really. Don't get me wrong, I love his series, but it wasn't really a "high point" for Star Wars. It doesn't mesh at all with Star Wars's style and is more like Samurai Jack with a Star Wars skin on it.
The films and the CGI TCW series are much better than his series.
