Seen a lot of the old Dark Horse stuff posted here lately, thought I'd post some issues of the new Darth Vader series from Marvel, which I think is actually very, very good. Let's read and discuss!
This is my first storytime, so let me know if I'm fucking it up somehow.
Book acts as a sister storyline to the main Star Wars book by Jason Aaron. You don't have to read that to understand this one, though. They are crossing over now, unfortunately...
Would you call yourself a SW fan, Anon?
Have to admit: was not a huge fan of the call back to ROTJ opening the series.
I think the Dark Horse stuff and some of the old EU got pretty far away from what was recognizably SW.
All the Marvel stuff so far has felt very of a piece with the OT.
A lot of the book is Vader politicking (his version of politics, anyway). It's something we rarely saw and yet its very enjoyable.
Flashback to Star Wars #1 incoming
Haven't read this since it came out and I forgot how badly Sheev shames our Dark Lord protagonist...
Yes and no. I'm of the generation that spent more formative years with Tie Fighter and Dark Forces than Prequels and Clone Wars, so Star Wars means a very different thing to me than what is actually "Star Wars."
Gillen somehow reconciles the Anakin of the prequels with the Vader of the OT in the voice he gives the character. I love it. It actually feels like he's adding to Star Wars, whereas Aaron's book feels like pure fanservice.
Agreed. I want so badly to like "Star Wars," and while it gets the characters mostly right (except for how Chewie keeps getting his ass kicked for some reason), the plot is a means to stage fan-service-y setpieces.
Best moment so far in any of the Marvel SW comics, for my $
Vader and the dead raiders splash page, I mean.
Bureaucrats make the best villains for anti-heroes
Time for maybe the most important contribution to the IP by Marvel so far...Dr. Aphra.
I'm mostly down with Aphra since she has a weird Vader-inspired deathwish. If she was just a hot adventurer with loose morals, I'd be far less on board.
Psycho 3PO and weapon R2 shouldn't work, but they mostly do.
I don't think any are bad, per se. I've read an issue or two of Kanan and they seemed well-done, especially if you're into the Rebels cartoon (I haven't seen it, so I have no context for him as an adult and am generally less interested).
I'm storytiming Vader because I think it's excellent. The main title had a good first arc, but I think #'s 8-12 were quite bad, actually.
Princess Leia has art by the Dodsons, so I never considered reading it....
Main problem with the SW books is that Marvel's greed wouldn't even let them finish a whole year's worth of stories before making the main books (SW and Vader) crossover.
Think of it this way: Gillen wasn't even allowed to write his OC's for ten issues before having to hand them off to Aaron. Marvel doesn't let creators just do their books without interference form the rest of the line. Main reason for tripidation going forward, because except for some janky fanservice from Aaron, Marvel's SW books have been very high quality and with only the best talent attached.
Man, these Captcha's are getting me down. Storytiming is a slog. You guys still reading, though? If the force is with us, Vader will continue.
Okay, I really like #4, so I'll post it and check after.
Thanks gang. The show will go on. Legacy, huh? How do I manage that, Anon?
Gillen does really amazing work with Prequel material...
OP, I just wanna say thanks for dumping, it's a fun read.
You're right, I'd much rather type, but I kept getting an "incorrect" response, no matter what I typed (or maybe I'm just mentally challenged).
Thanks, Anon. It's a terrific book.
I'm typing in the Captcha correctly and I'm getting a message saying the response is not correct.
It's okay. I'll keep going anyway.
No worries. Thanks for the assist anyway.
Any EU people know if the Genoshans were always portryaed outside AOTC as having a Queen a la ants/Xenos? I dig the weirdness, but it's interesting to see just how much of the new EU is actually a think veil over the old.
Here's where things get a lil out there, IMO. Gillen manages to ground everything enough in the SW lore to make it work, but it's all very biopunk.
Biopunk stuff showed up a lot in the EU that got tossed out I think.
The new Star Wars stuff from the past few years has slowly been pulling in more stuff from the old EU.
Recently Rebels reintroduced the Interdictor-class Star Destroyers which are pretty much necessary if we're to believe the Empire can keep rebel ships from escaping during the battle of Endor.
I'm sorry that I coulnd't post page 15...kept saying an image was embedded in the file. No clue.
I don't really like Rebels. Season 1 was solid in story but season 2 goes from good to shit too much. More episodes means more filler I guess. While I find Kanan an annoying character I like his younger personality in the comic more. And it's technically more clone wars and I can't argue with that.
It very rarely shows the present with the other rebels characters so it's a fresh story that moves away from the OT which all the other comics are fixated on.
Looking forward to Obi&Ani in Jan. Shame it's only a miniseries :(
Sure thing, Anon. Glad you're enjoying.
Gillen's execution in this scene is so economical and effective. He's a master of the form.
Drawing the actors' faces from the movies always comes out weird in these series.
The Kanan series seems to have better art than some of the other series since there are no faces to re-draw of real life people.
Okay everyone. The lady has returned home and I must retire. I'll do 7-12 tomorrow if Anons are into it. Have a good night everyone.
>Any EU people know if the Genoshans were always portryaed outside AOTC as having a Queen a la ants/Xenos
That is from TCW and probably something Lucas himself personally put in there.
Yeah, TCWs had an arc about them retaking Geonosis since the queen can stick larva into other living things' brains and control them like meat puppets.
Once they found out about that, they didn't lose the planet a second time.
Honestly I've only picked up Star Wars both issues #1 & #2 and I really liked both of them. The story begins just a few hours after the deathstar blowing up.
My brother bought the first issue for Darth Vader and we both enjoyed it. As you can see it's very entertaining
Do you seriously not remember how they were in ANH? That is exactly how they looked there.
I've been trying to find that youtube video where they show exactly how they hunted down the original ANH designer just to get the effect exactly right.
Really? She was with them the whole time in issue #1 and i remember them talking about how they had just gotten out of destroying the death star and already had to go to another battle. But maybe im mixing them up. Still fairly entertaining
To a degree, but mostly because of the space battles. Honestly, the sudden focus on Jedi has always been an issue with me. Give me a nice B-Wing or bounty hunter, and I'll be cool.
Honestly? I like it but I'm not really in love with it the way everyone else seems to be.
The high point of Star Wars was Gennedy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series imo. And I *guess* the OT as well.
it's one of the thousands of stories I've learned and liked.
If I seem to read more Star Wars compared to say Punisher or Gundam it's because of the sheer enormity of the Star Wars franchise.
>high point of Star Wars was Gennedy Tartakovsky's Clone Wars series
Not really. Don't get me wrong, I love his series, but it wasn't really a "high point" for Star Wars. It doesn't mesh at all with Star Wars's style and is more like Samurai Jack with a Star Wars skin on it.
The films and the CGI TCW series are much better than his series.
I guess, yeah. I love movies, I love games, Jedi Knight series was my jam. But I never was like one of those fanboys who dress like Luke Skywalker and swing with green dildos. Like, you know, I liked Star Wars things because they were good, not because I like Star Wars. But those good things made me like Star Wars, like, you dig, dude?
I believe this scene was in Star Wars ongoing as well.
And you just know Aaron didn't write it, he can't write good dramatic moments for shit.
