In American communities people that are really inclusive and matriarchal/patriarchal are sometimes known by familial titles.
She's old as fuck so kids in her neighborhood probably grew up with her babysitting them or playing with Peter at her house until she became sort of like THEIR aunt. Usually people close with Peter start doing it, like Gwen and MJ. Miles even calls her aunt cause she dotes over him.

because it's an iconic user title.
I have an Aunt Faye whom everyone calls Aunt Faye.

Do you have an Uncle Ken?

No, but I do have an uncle Ben who is a former sherif
My friend has an Uncle David that /everyone/ calls Uncle David. Sometimes the title just sort of fits the personality. Usually it's because that person has a lot of character about them. Uncle David has two glass eyes, weighs well over 500 pounds and is a horrifying racist sexist bigot. You SMELL him coming. He is Uncle David.
If a generation of youngsters grows up around somebody who has a title like that, it's likely to stick. There's something cool and authoritative, but comforting and approachable about it. I know an Uncle Joel (huge, black, old-school dad type), I know a Grampa Huwe (79 year old fisherman), I know an Aunt Kathy (drunken ex-military), I had the Grampa Neil (professional chef turned construction worker) before he passed away. That's just how things were growing up for me.
