Bill was a very good villain prior to the last two episodes. He affected the characters and caused interesting reactions. Good example is in Sock Opera where he made Mabel realize she was being selfish and needed to change. Antagonists should challenge protagonists and bring about change.

What makes him a bad antagonist now:

1. Mostly, his only interaction is with his friends, none of whom we give a shit about, and their interactions aren't interesting.

2. Follows Saturday morning cartoon show cliche of not bothering to kill enemies although he obviously considered Dipper enough of a potential threat at one point to bother with the Sock Opera shit.

3. Cliche "take over the world" plan without any real explanation as to why this makes sense for a carefree character.

4. No emotional stakes for the end plot in general, no practical stakes, we know they'll beat him and the world will never even know this happened.

We know it was just to show up in Dipper's dreams to fuck with Dipper who nothing really consequential.

Maybe if you merge the two concepts you get a more morally ambiguous character who is more interesting, and sometimes helps and sometimes harms? Like in Dreamscaperers, he compliments Soos, Mabel, and Dipper. I think it's a shame nothing ever came of that.

Have him playing a longer game with a more interesting goal, have things go back to the way he was with a more personal effect on the characters and emotional stakes. Get rid of his buddies. Have him go back to being weirder, maybe his plan breaks down reality instead of just weird monsters running all over the place.

Bill should be more alien like he was in the beginning. He should interact more with the main characters in a way that challenges them Like with Mabel in Mabel's bubble.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the Society makes a reappearance in some capacity. Bill flashes two different Blind Eye pages when he's scanning the Journal in EfR (this, and one of a cloaked society member). The last time he did something like that, it turned out the images he was showing were plot relevant (specifically, Blendin appeared in his list of candidates at the end of TLM).

And if they ever plan on giving Fiddleford's story some closure, now is the last opportunity for it.

I more or less exhausted what I wanted to say about Bill in the last thread, but it's worth pointing out that Alex already told us exactly what the original plan for Bill was.

He was originally conceived as a background, Q-style annoyance who harassed Dipper in his dreams and tossed around a bunch of conspiracy theory references.

Remember when Mabel suddenly realized what she had just done? She freaked the fuck out, it was a great moment with great voice acting.

Another good example was in The last Mabelcorn. Dipper seemed to have full on PTSD from Sock Opera and was a paranoid wreck.

Basically, the antagonists' action have been consequences for the protagonists and spur them onward.

Escape from Reality dropped the ball with the Mabel stuff, and the tone was very light, like a filler episode. It didn't seem like there were stakes for the main characters any more, just "this annoying thing is happening to one little town, better fix it."

Went from a hyped up, all-knowing dream demon to a generic bad guy that wants to rule the world when a planet should be nothing to a being on his scale. Nothing about Weirdmaggeddon really fits the mind-related motifs that surrounded him.

Someone in another thread pointed out that Bill is a very rare villain for whom the Light Yagami "just according to keikaku" would actually have been sense. Should have pulled some of that out. It's more reasonable for Bill than for Light (for whom it was ridiculous).

That may be my least favourite season 3 plot pitch so far.

I enjoyed the monster of the week episodes, don't get me wrong. But I don't give a crap about any of them as characters. They're just plot devices. I could have gone the rest of the series without any of them returning.

Even if the focus was primarily on the interactions between the human characters, return after return to past episode stories would get old fast. As it was, all the callbacks in the last episode got on my nerves some. I'd probably hate a whole season worth of retreads.

Especially since the writers would more or less have to use Bill's henchdorks as antagonists, so it wouldn't feel totally removed from the events of Weirdmagddon.

One thing I've been wondering about is how the hell Ford learned what Bill's weakness is in the first place. It's not like Bill would have told him during a round of pillow talk. So if there's some source of knowledge out there, why can't the rest of the Pines family find it?

It might've been a little rigidly structured if handled incorrectly, but I wouldn't have minded a long term quest to uncover the secret of how to defeat Bill.

Yea, I know the exact jewish wording of the deal means that Bill is in the clear, but in Sock Opera, there was the very clear implication that Bill was going to give the password for Dipper making the deal. Kinda changes his character from "Deal with the devil" type to "Chronic backstabbing" type. Deal with the devil type would have made a more fun villain.

Damn, didn't expect that.

It was a passion project though, so I'm not sure if I'll do another fic. Gravity Falls made me feel a sense of fun I haven't experienced in years watching a show, and it made me appreciate my family, and how they helped me in difficult times. A lot of Dipper's anxieties I wrote were just a reflection of my own, and Mabel in parts was the kind of person I wished was there to help me.

You'd think so, going by their image and park/employment policies. But, in truth, they're still pretty conservative when it comes to actually putting gay characters in their franchises. Just a few threads ago, someone brought up the lesbian couple S&P censored in the original Love Gods boards. And those were just throwaway background characters.

For a main character like Mabel, who's arguably the stand out cast member, the pushback would be massive. The only way I can envision a creator like Alex pulling it off is if he publicly announced the ship was canon before ever revealing it in the show. I can't say the same for others, but I was hoping to see something more for Mabel than what we got. I dislike the first half of the episode so much because of how Mabel acted like she hadn't mistakenly given the rift to Bill, and how even after all that Dipper, Wendy, and Soos went through in the apocalypse before getting to the bubble, Mabel was generally a piece of shit

I was hoping for Mabel to come to her own senses about being in a dream world, remember what happened with Bill, and that she needs to grow the fuck up, because she'll be left behind if she doesn't

Instead we get a cliche candyland of callbacks and Dipper doing all the thinking and hard work like usual, only to allow Mabel to do something she should have been able to do herself and be the hero in the end

The episode was weaker than it could have been. Dippyfresh, and how ok Mabel was with him as a replacement, seemed very out of character, but most of the hate came from the "MABEL IS A SHE DEMON WHO FEASTS ON DIPPER'S HAPPINESS" crowd.
