My father pulled me aside and was genuinely intrigued by there being Disney characters in what was clearly a Japanese book.

I explained the story to him, slowly, which turned into an explanation of Japanese culture in relation the art medium.

I was lucky enough to have parents who didn't give a hot fuck about what I watched on tv.

However, I do remember in 2nd grade, when the Pokemon craze was in full fucking force, my best friend told me his mom didn't let him watch Pokemon because it was "created by Satan."

At the time, that was by far the most baffling, mind blowing, confusing thing I had ever heard in my 8 years of existence, because as a kid, anything adults said was fucking gospel, so at the time I thought,

The only kid's show I wasn't allowed to watch was Pokemon.

My Grandma was mainly the one who enforced it, but my parents did make me sell/throw away all of my Pokemon merch. Ironically, several of the plushes I sold for a dollar at a yard sale now sell for hundreds on eBay.

I specifically remember not being able to watch Ed, Edd and Eddy and The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy because the characters used the word "stupid"

Parents didn't like shows with supernatural elements; fucking shame, since I've realized those are sort of the shows I like the most since then.

'Ren and Stimpy' and 'Beavis and Butthead' were the only ones I couldn't watch. I was 12 when South Park started airing, and my family actually watched it together, before we lost interest after second season. Only other restriction was I couldn't watch wrestling, which was fine my be anyway.

I talked to my friend some time ago and he was never allowed to watch Spongebob because of that one fucking study that it killed braincells. I saw that article and laughed, years later I find out a friend was affected and believed it along with his parents.

My parents were disgusted when Avatar came out, with the whole rebelious kids going to a booby traped ship they were told not to go and ugly artstyle, and definetely didn't want us to keep watching. My sis and I didn't like either, but the four of us kept hate-watching it. There was a comedy central show with only guys. I was so horny.

My parents (really just my mom, though) banned only two things: South Park and Grand Theft Auto. These were the only two things that I was absolutely forbidden to partake in.

Of course I got plenty of both at friends' houses.

To be fair they both aimed to be as offensive and controversial as possible so in terms of violence they were far and above anything else out at the time. She didn't really care about the sexual shit or the poop humor, just the idea of me becoming too accustomed to violence, I guess.

Before that when I was very young she had banned any gun toys, but realized it was a lost cause when I pretended to shoot her with a banana.

I used to be left alone to watch over the house when my mother went to work the graveyard shift so I got a healthy dose of Adult Swim at night over the summer. She didn't know that tho.

As for cartoons we weren't allowed to watch, Johnny Bravo and 7teen come to mind. My mom absolutely hated Johnny Bravo because of the titular character, and I guess she was in a bad mood when she saw us watching 7teen.

He played a lot of Super Nintendo (his favorite games on it were Super Castlevania 4 and F-Zero) but his all-time favorite game was Ocarina of Time. I remember being aggravated because it was supposed to be my game but he would spend hours playing it.
He liked South Park a whole lot, and had some VHS tapes of it which he only let me watch when he was around, and he would make this kind of frustrated groan when they said sexual terms. I guess during the movie he was laughing so hard the entire time he didn't have time to cover my eyes when Kenny went to titty heaven or tell me to look away when Saddam and Satan were playing with the dildo.
Unfortunately, he also had problems with prescription pills and had a tendency to be argumentative, so he and my mom hollered at each other more and more as they got closer to splitting up. The Simpsons - It's not for kids (which is true-ish) but I try to talk to my parents about it now and they say it's just stupid people doing stupid things. My younger neighbors always talked about it and that pissed me off.

One Piece - Mom saw a part where the clown was chopped up, and only his head, hands and feet were tied up. It's not gore, it makes sense in the show.

The Princess and the Goblin - No idea. It was always the forbidden VHS tape.

There are more that I can't remember. I avoided some shows because I knew my mom would yell at me. Ed Edd and Eddy, Naruto, Grim Adventures, Dexter's Lab. A lot of cartoon network stuff.

I mainly lived with Mom afterwards and saw him on weekends until around middle school when his living situation got less stable. I haven't seen him in a few months, actually. I tried to call him today but the phone was fucking busy, which I hasn't happened when I've tried to call someone in a while. I don't have Facebook or anything like that, he can't really drive, and I'm usually busy/prefer to jerk off at that moment, so we really only talk a couple times a month. Usually about music, he got me into hard rock and metal when I was a kid, so nowadays I introduce him to bands I've found out about a lot, or ask him stuff like "Hey, did you ever hear [album x] back when it came out?" He doesn't really play vidya anymore. The last video game I remember hearing him talk about loving was Resident Evil 4. He hasn't watched South Park in a few years either, next time I talk to him I oughta bring up this season's story arc.

Nothing was off limits. My dad took me to see the first Pokemon movie, he said he hated it afterwards, but I thought it was awesome.

Only now I understand how much shit he watched through all the time just to make me happy.

Couldn't watch Ed Edd and Eddy cuz it "made fun of people who live in trailers" (I've like never watched it so I don't even know if it does) even though my parents were loaded and we lived in a huge ass house.

I don't think he can really afford vidya anymore. Even if he could he never has a stable home anymore. He's finally completely sober, but also legally blind and his back is fucked up and 44 is a bit too late to turn your life around completely, especially when you're poor as fuck. On the upside, however, he's always been good at grilling and making steak and shit, and he lived with a dude from rehab for a while who had a bunch of fancy spices and shit in his house so he made food with his own recipes that people told him was amazing so he said he's thinking about going to culinary arts school and getting off disability and becoming a professional chef. I think he's living with a woman whose kids have a PS4 right now so maybe he'll play something on that.

There was even episode where old people escaped from that house and it looked like some kind of prison.

Im 32 y/o and i still have a grandmother that is waaaay more optimistic and energetic than me and he often comes to visit me and brings her food to make his little boy happy lol.
I cant even imagine of putting her in that house...she is a human not some kind of an old thing.

He's pretty scared that all his family's gonna die on him. The coolest fucking dude in the whole family, who was older than my dad and had a Super Metroid cartridge just lying around on his floor last time I saw him, and who was also my dad's best friend, died a year or two ago. Both his parents died within the last ten years, and so did a bunch of his cousins or something. I remember a year or two ago he told me he was at four funerals in one month. Considering all the health problems that run in our family and all the drugs most of our family's exposed to, his fear is quite warranted.

Old-folks homes are a pretty horrifying thing, having emerged out of a 'need' to free up space and resources as well as time. The fact that our social model has produced what are essentially "go wait to die" housing blocks for the elderly is nothing short of staggering.

My mom would not want my dad to live with her. Towards the end of my parents being together my grandpa (dad's side) moved in with us, and he lived with my dad until about a year before he died, when he moved to a hotel that was for old people and disabled people or something. It was weird. Not like a retirement home or something...I can't explain it. I guess my dad will live with me like that eventually, but he told me he filled out an application to live at his old apartment place not too long ago, so maybe he'll stabilize finally. He still has a little bit of that kid in him; he said something along the lines of "Wouldn't it be cool if I had apartment number (so-and-so) again? It'd be just like the old days."
