I don't get the purpose of this issue

It slightly fucks with the established characters, it goes way too fast to be aimed at new readers, while old readers will just be annoyed at the mountain of things that have changed for no reason or have been emphasized to the point of feeling like a parody (Hashtags? "So tweeting this"? Gwen's personality?)

Not a fan of the overall style either but that's just personal preference

I'm not sure how to feel about this issue.
It was by no means, BAD or anything but it was pretty mediocre at the same time.
It's not by any means terrible, and certainly better than some recent Spidey things but it feels bland and almost attempts too hard to be hip despite this being in like 2003...maybe?
It's still unclear whether this is 616 or not, but I'm just gonna go ahead and say it isn't because it doesn't feel like it is.

Also I'm not sure what's going on with the Osborns' or Flash's hair.
>>77873295
I mean in the first panel he's in, the hair kinda looks like Osborn hair but done in a not cornrow-ish style. Kinda odd how both Osborns seem almost Spanish or maybe mixed. Especially odd considering in 616, if this isn't 616, Norman can be a pretty racist bastard.

Overall, I feel like the highlights are the pages with Spider-Man just being Spider-Man and the beginning showed some promise, even with the hashtag and selfie weirdness. It's just kinda mediocre. I kinda liked it, but it also kinda doesn't sit well with me either. It's harmless.
Also no Bonesaw or Human Spider so instantly 0/10
Actually I'd give it maybe a 5 or 6/10. 5.5/10 I guess.

Yeah, same writer and all, but Silk did manage to make Silk a likable character, which is an accomplishment.

I think this is 2000 or 2001 (maybe even 1999 if you really want to push it)

To explain the gap in technology, just remember that despite how most of the time writers kind of ignore it or don't bother mentioning it, the tech that even civilians have is decades ahead.
They have all those gimmick devices that were kinda impractical for us but for them its working 100%, and robots and nanotech are more advanced in their world.
>>
So Spidey and Ultimate Spider-Man are happening parralel to each other? This is all sorts of interesting to my brain.
>>
>>77872293
Yup. Done.
The High School kids were never abusive to each other in the Lee/Ditko run, they just had 'bants. Pete gave as good as he got and it only got physical one time and that was in a in a boxing ring.
Plus Gwen wasn't part of the high school cast.

At least they didn't have Ben getting killed the same night as Pete's first wrestling match.

I'm surprised by /co/'s reaction to this book. I thought this was great. Fast paced, fun, great art, and it kind of feels like the Raimi movies a bit. This is a lot better than Slott's dogshit and whatever Bendis is going to do for Miles. Adding this to the pull.
>>
>>77894320
You're completely right. The continuityfags here are full of it. They just can't accept a fun book when they read one.
>>
>>77894128
Well, according to Marvel Wiki, it's the 616 earth characters appearing in this issue.

There is.
>>
>>77871643
So is this seriously rewriting the early history of Peter Parker?
>>
>>77894320
The book's fine as is.

If they're trying to shoehorn it as the new backstory for 616 it probably wouldn't make much sense since Flash and the Osborns don't look like that. So you shouldn't be surprised at people legit asking questions.

If it's an all new self-contained thing that might have ties to what's going to be put into the Sony films, then I'd actually approve and think that Thompson and Bradshaw should just continue on and ignore what's going on in the current comics.

No. If you mean why they're acting like it's 2015 instead of 2001, it's because this gets it ahead of the sliding timescale. It you make it where it should be with the sliding timescale NOW (circa 2001) then it'll be dated within a few years. If you set it in a time similar to 2015, then that means it'll still be canonically accurate to the time it takes place in years from now.

Marvel uses a 4:1 timescale (every 4 years for us is 1 year in universe), so while it's currently ~14 years ago, in 2019, it'll have been ~15 years ago (2001 for us now, will be 2004 in 2019, 2007 in 2023 etc.). This way it won't look dated for a while.

Also all the slight changes makes me question how canon this is supposed to be. Until otherwise indicated, I'm just treating this as an alt-universe like Marvel Adventures: Spider-man or Ultimate Spider-man.

>Q: Over the years, a number of new characters have been retroactively inserted into Peter's high school life, like Jessica Jones or the guidance counselor and AV club in "Learning to Crawl." There's also Cindy Moon, whose adventures you chronicle monthly in "Silk." Do you have any interest in further exploring these new additions to Peter's high school years?

>A: Absolutely -- there's a rich history of Peter's high school life to draw from, from Lee/Ditko to Dan Slott. You'll also see some characters from Peter's life introduced into his high school life that you may not expect. As for Silk/Cindy Moon, she's sadly in the bunker already, but I have to admit I'm tempted to show a quick scene of her at some point -- studying one of Spider-Man's fights. Alone. In the bunker. It's possible I'm a terrible person!
