I never really cared about the lore of Halo, in fact I liked that there was very little lore. Videogames have piss poor stories 99% of the time, I liked that Halo's story was minimal and didn't try to embarrass themselves by attempting to write something.

It's hard to actually bridge the story from there though because of what Reach did. I don't think it's them changing anything so much as it is just them being unable to give people the whole story and explain to people who didn't read the books/data drops how it fits in with Reach.
