If you didn't know, which is rather probable, Goodreads just released their Best Books of 2015 winners, based on user voting. This ought to be interesting subject to talk about, as Goodreads is pretty good indicator to what genuine casuals think of comics, rather than the usual hardcore Big Two supporters and, well, /co/. So let's see what the top20 looks like, shall we?

>1. Saga volume 4 by Brian K. Vaughan - 18,578 votes
>2. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson - 17,471 votes
>3. Attack on Titan, Vol. 15 by Hajime Isayama - 13,751 votes
>4. Ms. Marvel, Vol. 2: Generation Why by G. Willow Wilson - 12,029 votes
>5. Thor, Vol. 1: The Goddess of Thunder by Jason Aaron - 10,046 votes
>6. Lumberjanes, Vol. 1: Beware the Kitten Holy by Noelle Stevenson - 8,529 votes
>7. Sunstone Vol.1 by Stjepan Šejić - 7,898 votes
>8. Step Aside, Pops: A Hark! a Vagrant Collection by Kate Beaton - 7,453 votes
>9. The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage: The (Mostly) True Story of the First Computer by Sydney Padua - 6,050 votes
>10. Hawkeye, Vol. 4: Rio Bravo by Matt Fraction - 4,555 votes
>11. Rat Queens, Vol. 2: The Far Reaching Tentacles of N'rygoth by Kurtis J. Wiebe - 2,383 votes
>12. Sex Criminals, Vol. 2: Two Worlds, One Cop by Matt Fraction - 2,356 votes
>13. The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman - 2,001 votes
>14. Username: Evie by Joe Sugg - 1,980 votes
>15. The Wicked + The Divine, Vol. 2: Fandemonium by Kieron Gillen - 1,939 votes
>16. Soppy: A Love Story by Philippa Rice - 1,833 votes
>17. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Vol. 1: Squirrel Power by Ryan North - 1,537 votes
>18. Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson1,238 votes
>19. March: Book Two by John Robert Lewis - 1,229 votes
>20. The Sculptor by Scott McCloud - 1,001 votes

For those who like data, a total of 124,471 votes was cast. The top20 consists of the books that survived the initial nomination process, so this is only a popularity contest for the remaining twenty nominees. It's still a decent list to see what people have read and what they like.

IMO, the list is very good confirmation of the current trend with comics: social media darlings, specifically ones promoted on specific comic platforms dominate the list, graphic novels like March and the Sculptor for example were often heralded at places like Panels.net and its immediate affliates. There's also several old favorites still appearing on this year's list: Sex Criminals, Rat Queens, Ms. Marvel, Saga and Attack on Titan all did quite well again this year, Ms. Marvel in particular rose considerably in the ranks from 2014 when it didn't make it to the top10. Also worth noting that Saga only got slightly more votes than last year, going from 17,964 votes to 18,578, and in 2014 it was placed 2nd, after Leaves on the Wind, a Serenity mini series which got nearly 22k in votes.

So, thoughts? Egregious absences in the form of certain books not making the top list? Rage that Squirrel Girl did so well? Surprise that /co/s favorite BDSM smut made it to the top ten? General indifference?

This is just what's popular on the internet
>>
this is a shit website they don't even list the complete creative team
>>
>>77864300

Well it is primarily a book social media site after all. Comics just get featured due to being part of ye old print media.

Truly shameful. Only WE are allowed to vote for comics like Saga in OUR annual polls. Seeing other websites vote for comics like Saga is just a depressingly painful reminder that the world outside of /co/ is filled with mindless crowd-following sheeple and casuals.

>So, thoughts
Their user base is mostly female. Women like stories with women, relationships, sex, fantasy, fairy tales, sexual minorities and Neil Gaiman, so there is nothing new here.

> Attack On Titan
> in the top three
> in the top ten
> in the top fifty

Fuck's sake. Shouldn't even be in the top twenty manga.
>>
>>77866412
It's absurd how popular AoT is. How did this happen? The manga falls apart into meandering bullshit territory way before vol. 15.
>>
Cartoons here: Why do shows like Harvey beaks and Clarence get so low rated on IMDB? Especially, Clarence, I assumed people would bump it up because of the lesbian mothers, but I guess since everyone believes "Skyler is a sexual predator" it cancels out.

Which can go fuck themselves.

This board is so obsessed with "casuals"

Why not talk about what you wanna talk about or what you like reading instead of what other people like or read
>>
>>77866693
It's the new thing to hype about, that's why. The anime is also on Netflix, I bet that had something to do with it.
>>
This is just a basic bitch starter pack, though I guess that's the kind of people who are way into internet poll voting.
>>
>>77867673
Because this thread is about what other people read? Are you dense or something?

>Attack on Titan is that high

It's not going anywhere! It hasn't had direction for more than half its run!
>>
>>77867815
But why make the thread? Why is it so important to you what other people are reading with their time especially in the event you disagree with their interests which clearly is happening in the situation we find ourselves in currently
>>
>>77867928
It's not important at all, took 2 second to read the OP, 2 seconds to reply. Why are you so bothered by what other people post online? Your problems seem to run much deeper, they seem to disturb you and affect your daily life.
>>
>>77867928
It gives perspective of what the silent (casual) demographic reads outside of the incestual forums like /co/ and you can speculate why certain types of books find such large audience while others don't. It's about dissecting the market and what makes it tick outside of capeshit.

Let me just google what this is-OH MY GOD-it's smut

This just looks like how the Oscars are to actual move goers. There's movies people watch and there's movies people say they watch to impress friends.

>there's movies people say they watch to impress friends.
March is the only comic on there that I wouldn't be embarrassed to show off to my friends.

Apart from
>March
>Soppy (the rom-com)
>Roller Girl (the all-ages believe-in-yourself be-yourself picker-upper)
>The Sculptor (the flop)
and
>the porno
everything on there is "nerd culture" geekbait.
