Jesus Allison, I guess we just couldn't have one character be a person instead of a stereotype. Colin's the angry Irish one. Jack is the brooding artist. Shauna's the brainy lower-class girl and Mildred is the socially aware, rich-girl vamp. I guess after no one read Scary Go Round for 8 years you just gave up.

But that was the point. He was very into her, but Sonny's not a total tool and knows you shouldn't be forcing girls to stay with you just because you happen to have their magic seal skin. What with the whole "you would not have to own me to have me" thing.

And that's also the kind of cliche that other anon was ranting about. "Sonny didn't immediately bone some girl who magically had to love him, must be gay." The whole arc for Sonny in that story was having to come to terms with maturing and him seeing it differently than his friends. Not because he's gay, but because he's not the same kind of person as they are. He didn't want to be doing all that teenager stuff like trying to impress or pick up girls. He had to deal with puberty. Then he ends up having to basically take care of this girl with no knowledge of the world and do right by her. Were he gay, he'd be having confusing feelings about bear mode seal dad or something. So I guess he's bi? I dunno. It just doesn't fit narratively to me.

Sometimes it feels like Allison needs to have weird anti-climaxes that under cut things just for the tone, and not much to do what with what makes an enjoyable or interesting story. Sometimes they are, but it often feels pointless at other times.

I followed his blog for a while, back when blogs were still a thing. I eventually stopped because he so infrequently updated.
I really admire his ability to meld drama, surreal humor and 'British' humor (esspecially seeing how obnoxious the last one is in many writters hands).
He has really great dialogue too, it feels snappy and organic even if on close inspection you realize no real person would ever speak like his characters. He's like the Aaron Sorkin of webcomics.

The joke is that Marigold has literally learnt every mystery in Tackleford and so is unsurprised by anything anymore.

On an additional level, another character is revealed to be holding hands with a boy, implying a homosexual situation of some sort. As this character had previously been shown to have no prior homosexual inclinations, the humor here is derived from its offhand revelation to the audience. Furthermore, the next panel has a character dismissing this development as obvious, deriving humor from the juxtaposition of its inexplicable nature and the character's belief that it is not so. He writes until he doesn't know where to go, then he starts over. I mean really, it's all one big strip - Bobbins/Scary-Go-Round/Bad Machinery, but they're more or less dividing lines for when he wants to shift focus.

Scary-Go-Round was supposed to be about two relatively minor characters in Bobbins, but Shelley popped in and she and Amy took over for a while. Then Esther, Erin, and The Boy came along and took over for a while (though not completely) and they did their thing until they graduated high school and he started over with Shauna and Lottie in Bad Machinery. Then there's Giant Days, which is Esther's college days (and therefore back several years on the timeline).

The problem is his universe is so big that he's lost track of some of the characters and that's caused continuity issues. He wrote himself into a corner with Erin's return and stopped. I'd really kill for more Bobbins. Tim and Ryan, Amy and Shelley. They don't have to have wacky, zany adventures anymore. Maybe Holly could stop being a mega bitch.

Yeah but the problem from an SEO and business stand point was that he was using the Scarygoround.com domain name for bad machinery, and from a writing standpoint he'd added Ryan and Amy into the story as side characters and then had Ryan and Amy's relationship from Scary Go Round be a major plot in a Bad Machinery story, and the title never made that much sense any way and John probably just came to hate it on principle so he changed the name of everything back to Scary Go Round.

I am surprised and delighted, I thought there were only a handful of us that huddled around a sickly thread two or three times a year.

Really don't know how to feel about this one though. I was really feeling for Linton with the whole Claire business, but I guess it's just him being super thirsty lately?
