>in movie is a brit made up as an arab who wears chinese clothes and likes chinese things for no reason whos really an actor

>people call this good

Does the damage control with the MCU know no bounds? Are some people just incapable of admitting they make some awful choices? How long will it be till the blinders come off and some of these movies are seen as awful by everyone?
>>
>>77840419
Well "wizard alien super powered martial arts guy" sounds terrible to anyone who doesn't already like the character. Most people had never even heard of him.
>>
Sorry IM villains are awful and don't work in any context?
>>
>>77840419
Dude! That's Trevor. The real Mandarin has him now.
>>
>>77840451
OK what about "alien named Kree with Xandarian grudge seeking an Infinity Stone for his lord, Thanos"?

Or "Dark Elf"...
>>
>>77840419
Almost everyone said IM3 was terrible immediately after it came out.

In any case, Sir Ben Kingsley is of Indian descent and it's slightly, very unlikely, with the tiniest of odds, just possible that Trevor really is the Mandarin.
>>
>>77840473
And that was planned before marvel comicfags bitched about it
>>
>>77840462
>IM villains are awful
>He thinks Loki and Thor work
>Thinks a guy with alien tech rings can't work

DAMAGE CONTROL
Same type of faggot who says CAPS OUTFITS LOOK GOOD LOL, then also says Thor wouldn't work with a helmet and Hawkeye wouldn't work with a mask
>>
>>77840473
i'd like for a twist that either Trevor is somehow really the Mandarin or The Mandarin likes Trevor as his rep and continues to do that.
>>
>>77840487
Touché.

I thought Trevor was funny though.
>>
>Real mandarin hires Trevor to continue being fake mandarin
>>
>>77840473
Killian was the real Mandarin.

And no, All Hail the King isn't going to ever be brought up in the MCU (just like AoS) and is pretty much not canon.

Killian is the real Mandarin that counts and will be the only one to show up in the franchise.

Get over it.

>>
>>77840528
Yes. Everyone knows this. Everyone knows the odds of the Real Mandarin ever showing up are infinitesimal.

That doesn't change the fact that the shorts (which are canon) establish that there is a separate Mandarin, something pretty much confirmed by the existence of the ACTUAL Ten Rings terrorist groups in IM1.

Just because we won't see the resolution of this side plot doesn't make it non-canon. Hell, it makes the MCU feel deeper, like there are stories around each corner, and we just see some of what the A-listers do, but there's a whole world of weird out there, including terrorists with magic rings, just chugging along unobserved.
>>
>>77840419
>IF YOU SAW ALL HAIL THE KING IS DEFENDS THAT YOU AND THOUSANDS OF OTHERS WASTED YOUR MONEY

Marveldrones are the epitome of cancerous white knights. Even Star Wars fans knew the prequel trilogy they were given was shit when they got it
>>
I thought they had actually managed to update Mandarin to the new millennium pretty well. And of course they had to pull the old
>lol, just kidding, it's all a sham. There is no Mandarin, it was just an actor.
>lol, we were just kidding again! Actually there is a real Mandarin and he's pissed at Trevor, that whole thing in the movie about it all being lies? It was just a double bluff! please like us again I mean, why else would we do this in a superfluous Bluray extra if it wasn't all planned?

Just left a bad taste in my mouth. Had they stuck with it all being Killian's lie, fine. Would have liked to see Kingsley' Mandarin played straight but I liked the twist. But you can't have it both ways, it's just becomes stupid.
>>
Trevor was the best MCU villain.

>>
>>77840498
Thor would be dope in a helmet. But they don't want to hide a lead actor's face. Especially if he's there for sex appeal.

Mandarin is a silly villain, deal with it.
>>
>>77840618
It's about as deep as Coulson being brought back to life and no one being told about it (and pathetic that they made such a short shitting on their own movie) And will have the same amount of impact on the MCU
>>
>>77840668
Once again, damage control of the highest order.
>Can buy Viking gods as aliens
>Can buy literal aliens
>Can't buy literal aliens
>>
>>77840687
I don't think we should necessarily measures stuff by "impact", though. Look at comics - there are tons of one-shots or minis or short runs that have no long-term effect but are still fucking good.

Warren Ellis's Secret Avengers - six issues that have basically never been referenced again, but they're still great stories.

I'm not saying AoS or AHTK are great stories, I'm just saying the argument "well they won't get referenced again!" is not a particularly strong one. They're either good shorts/shows or not. I think pulling stuff like Item 47 and AHTK is good because it shows us there's more going on than we see in the movies.

It's what I hoped AoS would be, but the show's been a disappointment, with either shitty one-off villains or underwhelming Inhumans crap. Zabo, Garett and Whitehall were the only good villains on the show.
>>
>>77840578
Except that there has already been a character introduced in AoS in an MCU movie (AoU), the Hydra guy from season 2 is talking to Strucker in the beginnig sequence (putting aside the fact that the Avengers were acting on information from Coulson's team.)
>>
>>77840419
I think most MCU fans concede that IM2&3 were not good films
>>
>>77840419
Only smart people can really appreciate what Shane Black did here.

He took the typical overused trope of the Asian terrorist villain and turned it to a smart critique of America's nationalist propaganda, media terrorism and corporate greed.

But yes, if faggot anon on 4chin can't understand some sarcastic subtlety, it must be shit.

It's especially sad/ironic because Iron Man is what started this whole MCU shitshow to begin with. It really was a great movie, but then its legacy got shat on with a mediocre sequel and then raped in the ass with the failed abortion that was the third movie.
>>
>>77840582
>Wheaton Said so

>>
>>77841046
I never watched IM3 because the other two IM movies were boring and people said this one wasn't even as good as those ones, but now you've made me actually wanna watch it.

Like, the way you phrase it, it makes sense. Governments often get citizens to do what they want by stoking fears of "the outsider" (foreign governments gaining power, immigrants, terrorists, etc), but a lot of the biggest threats to security in the U.S. come from corporate hijacking of the democratic system.

Still, it'd be cool to do actual Mandarin, if only because it would be cool to see Stark, used to being the smartest guy around, confronted with alien tech so advanced, he can't understand it, and it may as well be magic to him.

He wouldn't be able to accept that fact. He would convince himself that it must just be smoke and mirrors, he just has to find what the "trick" is. But Mandarin's rings could really be from a culture so advanced, the human brain just isn't adapted to ever grasp it.

I could see the resolution hanging on Stark realizing that, if he doesn't understand the mechanics of these magic rings, neither does Mandarin. He just found a way to use them, without knowing what it is he's doing. Stark could exploit that to make it backfire for Mandarin.
>>
>>77841125
>Stark, used to being the smartest guy around, confronted with alien tech so advanced, he can't understand it, and it may as well be magic to him.

Honestly, my biggest gripe with the Iron Man movies is that they have one fucking villain - the Rival Industrialist with his Own Power Armor Technology. At least with Killian it's slightly different in that the Extremis tech is more biological than power armor-based, but still.

Where are the other weirdos, like the Mandarin or Ghost or Grey Gargoyle or whoever? Did we really need Stane AND Hammer AND Killian?
>>
>>77841125
if you don't want spoilers don't read further, but it's pretty much like this

Killian uses Mandarin as a diversion. His endgame is making Tony perfect his extremis technology and killing the president of the US, as he already has the vice president in his pocket.

the media totally buy the Mandarin and chaos ensues.

there are hints though that the real mandarin exists.
>>
>>77840419
People called The Avengers good, though revisionists on /co/ like to pretend otherwise, now that the hype has gone away. And not just good; three years ago it was treated as a masterpiece and as the best thing since sliced bread. This got a 92% on RT.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jqZQWuuaF8
>>
>>77841176
That doesn't sound too bad. Depends on how it was executed, I guess.

>>77841248
I remember walking out of the theatre finding the movie mediocre, and all my friend acting like I was some kind of downer for not just lowering my standards and liking it for what is was. Then again, people thought I was crazy for saying Iron Man was just okay. The MCU as a whole just didn't thrill me. I only really liked Captain America because the cinematography was at least a bit more interesting, being a nice-looking period piece.

Part of me found it super cool that there was actually a shared universe on screen, like in the comics. Like, "these guys were all in separate movies, and now they're together; that's pretty cool." But, after not being super impressed by the solo movies, and having this film hyped as being the culmination they were all working towards, it was a little disappointing that I actually liked the solo movies better than the pay off. At least those had character development, not just a bunch of action scenes and group poses strung together.
>>
>>77840451
So why even bother using the Mandarin?
>>
>>77841176
And let us not forget that One-off short where the Mandarin actually is confirmed kindof.

Not the guy you're replying to, but that character was introduced in the post credits scene of Winter Soldier then made appearances on AoS.

AoS is canon and Whedon's statment being taken out of context doesn't change that, but that character isn't an example of a character introduced AoS appearing in a movie.

>Killian fabricates a terrorist caricature to create chaos by media overhaul in order to get control of arms dealings.

are you mentally challenged?
>>
>>77841171
I would love for them to riff on the formula. Like the next film has Edwin Cord and the Firepower armor, but they're a complete red herring. The dramatic second act confrontation will be Tony against Edwin, on the roof of Cord Industries, Cord will make a veiled threat of calling security, Tony will tell him to bring it on, and out comes...two regular security guards who ask Tony to come with them to be escorted off the property. Because the Firepower armor is at a test site in Nevada and it's an unarmed testbed prototype. Cord Industries doesn't even see the Iron Man armor as a threat to its business interests as Tony refuses to produce armor for sale.
>>
>>77841308
Same thing happened to me with Ant Man. Walked out of the theater and found the whole movie mediocre. All my friends thought it was the greatest thing ever made.
>>
>>77841454
>The terrorists were actually a front for the real villain, an evil American businessman.

>>
>>77841662
The ten rings where not a front for Stane. They worked together. He gave the weapons in exchange for capturing/killing Stark.

At no point he used them as a diversion.
>>
One day people will eventually understand that inaccuracy to the source material is not and never will be a legitimate criticism of a film.

One day. I have to believe this.
>>
>>77841082

But anon, let me say that I agree with you.
>>
>>77842021

Yes, but bad adaptation does not mean bad movie/TV show. You can be a downright terrible adaptation and still be an excellent work.
>>
>>77842017
The second film's problem is the shoe-horned in Avengers setup that went nowhere killing the pacing and fucking with the act structure. The third film has actual plot holes. IM2 could be improved by a competent film editor with a couple of free days.
>>
>>77841046
I like the attitude, I like shitting on 4chan, but smart critique? Jesus Christ, what are your standards?
>>
>>77842044
Obviously, but it still doesn't change the fact that quality of adaptation is a legit criticism for an adaptation. Personally, I think the Mandarin twist was the best part of the film, but that doesn't mean the rest of the film isn't a mess.

Seriously, you don't have such great setup for Ben Kingsley then turn around and give us Guy Pierce as a middle-aged, frat guy looking douche.
>>
>>77842106

I didn't mind Guy Pearce honestly. He was a good mirror to Tony's story arc, the big final fight with him was entertaining and he was basically written as a Lethal Weapon villain with flame powers, which I enjoyed via the Shane Black connection.

>>
>>77842138
Killian as a character was hampered by what they did in his backstory, having it look like he's just being petty for Tony standing him up and basically giving him a massive inferiority complex. The fact that he has zero buildup as a villain other than working with the Mandarin and no physical presence only makes it worse.
>>
>>77840506

the entire thing was a set up so trevor could meet tony in person. not even the interviewer in all hail knows trevor is really the mandarin. he only finds out when the mandarin shoots him.

Considering all the weapons-grade autism that goes around /co/ when an adaptation is NOT MUH I'm surprised a lot of it is so forgiving of that movie.

Maybe even they can't reject the visual style.
>>
>>77842201
It isn't called Hellblazer for starters. It's more of a character adaptation as compared to the Constantine show. It's also why the Constantine show wasn't as well received initially, as it was trying to be a Hellblazer adaptation.

>It's more of a character adaptation as compared to the Constantine show.

The Mandarin twist is just this utterly baffling case of them trying to not be so offensive it comes off as really awful.

If they had it so something like the 60s era Mandarin was pushed as propaganda in order to inflame xenophobia? Sure, I can see that. Turning him into a metaphor for blowback by identifying him with bin Laden and giving him a lot of other flavour of failed US foreign policy? Sure.

When you combine those? You're getting into Truther territory.

Why are you capefags so autistic?

I mean I know they tried something new but that's nothing to whine about. Is all the complaining from the fact they're not rehashing the same stories like capeshit usually is?
>>
>>77840462
Yeah, because Killian was such a fantastic villain.
Understand that no one whined about Henri Ducard being Ra's Al Ghul because he was a better character and villain than fake Ra's. Here's the different fucking situation, hence people not liking the twist. Had the main villain been not dogshit, no one would've complained so much.

How about this for Actual Mandarin?
>Iron Man #Whatever
>Ten Rings terrorist group is increasing it's power in the Middle East, taking control of Chinese oil properties
>They eventually grow strong enough to threaten China itself; They are a group that wants to return China to it's pre-Communist Nationalist order, and through that, dominate the world
>Though Stark doesn't see eye-to-eye with the Chinese government, the Ten Rings must be stopped, so SHIELD contracts him and the government hero, the Crimson Dynamo (the Chinese's attempt to replicate the Iron Man armor, but with a different power source, since they couldn't crack the arc reactor), to stop the Ten Rings.
>There are myths about "The Mandarin" being the leader of the Rings, but Stark doesn't believe them, as he knows The Mandarin is just a character
>When Stark comes face-to-face with Mandarin, he is stunned by his rings, which do impossible things, like matter/force manipulation, conjuring darkness, heat, or cold from nothing, etc.
>Turns out the Rings received initial funding from the U.S. to hurt their Chinese competition's interests, but this backfired on them
>Stark becomes obsessed with re-verse engineering them, as he believes that there is no magic and anything can be understood once the scientific principles are known. The possibility that this is beyond him scares him
>>
>>77846252
>He even goes to Reed Richards (lets hope Fox gives up the rights after that last film), who he accepts may be a greater scientist than he, but Reed goes, "sorry, bro; this be magic."
>Mandarin takes huge swaths of Asia, demands to be recognized as a state; some states are forced to do so, as he now controls some Chinese stockpiles
>Stark eventually finds the alien craft Mandarin got his rings from. Though the artifacts are so alien and advanced, his human brain can't comprehend how they work, he comforts himself by telling himself that, even if he doesn't understand it, it MUST be science that works according to nature, and not actual magic. He comes to realize that Mandarin doesn't understand the rings himself; he's like an ancient shaman who could fool his tribe into thinking he was precognizant by simply noticing patterns in the weather and stars that they didn't, without understanding how climate or astronomy even work himself
>Stark exploits the unpredictable nature of the rings to make them backfire on Mandarin
>Stark destroys the rings and the ship, believing them too dangerous to exist on Earth.

>Iron Man 2
>Same plot we had in Iron Man 1 (bad guy wants Iron Man's tech for weapons, will hire other bad people to help him, etc)
>Editing is so bad, villain is left without motive other than vague "ur daddy hurt my daddy, exactly how will never be elaborated upon"
>Pointless subplot about Iron Man dying
>"My chest thing is killing me? How do I stop it? Good thing my dad left notes about how to create a new element. All I have to do is shoot things at this thing in this pointless scene."
>Third act is a bunch of drones

We do admit its an awdul choice, but Iron Man himself was still awesome.

Good villains make a cape movie great. But shit heroes can't be redeemed by good villains, and bad villains don't ruin a great hero.

That's why people who like parts of Man of Steel dislike the whole movie. As great as Zod was, a weak characterization of Clark among other flaws made the movie fall flat.
Mandarin was absolutely fucking awful and IM 3 had a pretty meandering plot, but Tony was still good enough to put it at the bottom rung of good movies rather than in bad movie territory.

If science is just the use of method to understand the behaviour of nature (which we can then manipulate for technology), and magic is the exact same thing as those things, what's even the point of the word "magic"? If magic works because of regularities in behaviours of stuff, it's just science/technology, and the word "magic" is meaningless.

What I was trying to get at is that Stark's worldview is based on things working based on the pattern of the universe, being intelligible, etc. Realizing that and exploiting that is how he became who he is. If things happen just because, that would put a wedge in his entire sense of not only the world, but himself. Even knowing that it's science he doesn't understand, rather than not even that, would be a comfort to him ("the universe does work the way I think after all"). But I'd keep it vague as to whether he's correct, or just telling himself what he wants to hear (just because it's alien doesn't mean it's science... could be ancient alien magic or some shit).

>>77849616
>An evil chinese man who can take over the world being stopped by good chinese men and women who are the parallels to the avengers?

I had a similar idea in having the Crimson Dynamo be a Chinese state-sponsored hero Iron Man works with to take on Mandarin. They would have opposing ideologies, but would both be on the side of good.

It's relevant political commentary. Almost every shitty Middle Eastern figure or organization was at one point or another propped up by Americans. From Bin Ladin to ISIS.

The fact that you can't recognize it even as it is displayed in your own cinema is testament to how little Americans pay attention to their own government from just a few decades ago.
