Judging by how Greg seemed to know Amethyst was about to turn into Rose, and from Greg getting upset when Amethyst started transforming at all, my guess would be that what broke their friendship up years ago was also Amethyst shapeshifting into Rose. Maybe it was completely innocent the previous time, like Amethyst just wanted to help him cope with the loss of Rose, but it still disturbed the fuck out of him and they stopped hanging out.

But yeah, this time it was done out of pure malice. It's to this day still one of the most fucked up things on the show, especially from a hero character.

I think it's something she used to do as a way to make Greg break down and watch TV with her. Like if baby Steven needed to be changed or comforted Greg would try to get up to leave but amethyst would play the dead mom card weeks after rose died to keep Greg around. She only connects to humans on a surface level so as long greg is watching little Butler it doesn't matter if he's broken inside because of what she said or done.

Actually part of the censors' incentives for the channel to provide at least two-four seconds more advertising time for commercials. At least that's what I learned when I used to be deep into Adventure Time. Some of their cuts didn't even have violence, sex references or swears.
