It's read as if it were a point-and-click adventure game, like Myst. Act 1 had a reader suggestion box, so most of what John does is the result of zany forum shenanigans and in-jokes from 6 years ago. After Act 1 the suggestion box was literally nuked and the story started picking up.

Read the adventures in order. Jailbreak and Bard Quest are super short and can be powered through in nothing flat, and the later adventures reference them a lot. Problem Sleuth comes after that and is significantly shorter than Homestuck, and gives you a good grasp of Hussie's style of humour. It's also before Tumblr blew up so it's completely untainted and utterly pure. After that you should be good to read Homestuck, understanding most of the references and in-jokes that are shown.

What I don't understand is, if John's retcon powers weren't accounted by paradox space, the "alpha timeline" was just supposed to happen that way, with everybody dying? How is that consistent with how alpha timelines work?
But the characters mention that it was doomed indeed, then what doomed it? Was it Aranea's intrusion?
Then, wouldn't just keeping the ring safe from her save the timeline? Why was it necessary going all back to resurrect Vriska?

It's not even a complaint. The situation is so difficult to justify that it confuses me, I don't understand why things happened how they happened.

WHERES THE GAME

One day I was talking to somebody who I believe is relatively close to Hussie, or at least to Rachel, and he told me one thing.
We're supposed to see the different characters from different timelines as the same character, just like all the Marios in different runs of the same game are essentially the same Mario.
I guess this is what Hussie was trying to say during this last act, when all the characters parroted non-stop that all the alt selves were equally relevant.
I understand what he's trying to do and it's actually a good idea, but I don't think he's managing to pull it off because he has developed the characters so much as a consequence of their experiences that they may as well just be different characters. It would work for simpler or shorter stories, but Homestuck is so long that it just doesn't. I can't help but see the retcon kids as new characters, and it's all so clumsily executed that I feel completely detached from them.

We have seen that with Dave and later Rosesprite, everyone's already used to seeing alternate selves running around. Pre-retcon John and Roxy has probably the smallest net difference between them and their post-retcon, doomed selves, so any implication would turn out to be negligible.

Class and Aspect, or heroic title for short

Every player gets given an aspect, which symbolises some facet of existence. All of them have an obvious meaning on top of a bunch of more obtuse and metaphorical ones. Caliborn is Time, which covers inevitability and consequence and stuff as well as the meta of the story. He is also a Lord, which basically means Time always works out to facillitate his goals or some such - he can basically demand Time to work for him.

Paradox Space is everything in the comic. Universes, Sessions, the Void, all of it is governed by Paradox Space's rules in addition to their own.

Squares Sprites comprise a sort-of soul fusion or multi-prescence of every dead instance of a character across Paradox Space. We currently have two known Square Sprites, one of which contains the conscious of every dead Rose and the other every dead Dave and Nepeta. They have flashing effects and crazy warping-teleporting powers and such. Not much is known about them. They're an excuse for Andrew to remove trailing characters without calling it death or to pull new ones out of no-where to fulfil the plot's demands.

("The plot's demands", if read literally, could be seen as Caliborn's power incidentally)

That's not how time travel works in Homestuck. Like at all. Each plane of existence has its own history, and time machines let the user travel between points in this history. So if you were on Earth and jumped to the future, you'd end up in a desertworld / waterworld, not the future of the comic. If you stuck around and entered the Medium, then traveling back in time would just take you to a point in the Medium before you entered. It wouldn't lead back to Earth. The only traveler with the power to time travel between points in a personal timeline instead is John, whose time and space powers exceed both Dave and Jade's.

So once Gamzee leaves the Medium and enters the B2 universe, no amount of time travel will let him rewind this. He'll be stuck on Earth until he finds another way to re-enter manually.
