As a diehard Gorillaz fan, I'm super excited. Damon makes great music and I've always enjoyed the hip-hop/rap influences that Gorillaz and Demon Days had. Plastic Beach was great, but too "commercial" or "different" than previous albums. Which might have been the joke with how Mudoc was taking the band.

Semi-coherant rant time: It seems like every Gorillaz album has just been the right album at the right time, so to speak. The self-titled album, although pretty disjointed, perfectly captured the possibilities and optimism of the new millennium. Demon Days was more cynical and downbeat to match the general dysphoria of the post-9/11 world and the height of the George W. Bush presidency. Plastic Beach had a more mysterious, uncertain vibe to match the general feeling in 2010 that we didn't really know what the new decade would bring.

They've tried multiple times to get a Gorillaz movie or tv show rolling. The closest we ever got was Monkey: Journey to the West, and that doesn't even really count.

I think the problem is that there aren't a ton of people who are deep enough into the band's fictional lore to care about it. Even in the band's fandom, there's a lot of people who don't follow that stuff at all. If they can't get their own fanbase into the story, how are they going to get the general public into it?

I will say it's not that great in my opinion.

1) Russell was supposed to have a much larger part. That is a pun and always the truth. The interactive island had a telescope that would reveal the big man swimming to the island.

Yes, that's true. He was supposed to be (hence why a character looked similar to him on the interactive island and I believe during Doncamatic). During to scheduling conflicts, he couldn't properly work with Damon to get a song produced.
