Is anyone disappointed that Sugar decided to restyle the show after the pilot? I followed her art for awhile and really loved her style from Pug Davis and her Singles short, and when I saw the SU pilot years back and they had translated that style into animation, I was excited and thought it was going to break the mold into the Adventure Time/Regular Show style that really dominates CN right now.
But then she went ahead and stylized them all to the point where characters now make boring anime-esque faces (The worst being when Peridot made a :3 face). I was hyped, thought we would see some of Sugar's art on TV, did the industry really streamline her art that bad? I barely see her draw the way she used to on her Tumblr.
Because Americans really care how hard Koreans have to work at animating a difficult design.
It looks way better post pilot
The pilot looked creepy
eh.. i like some of the old designs better, i like other of the changed designs better.. sometimes it's aspects of one and something else of another. old pearl is less ugly but the hair simply will not do.. old amethyst was less obese but had weird skull nostrils..
If the pilot had stuck to the original designs that she put out on her poster, then it'd look a lot better
especially since steven was designed to be a short fat man
>Is anyone disappointed that Sugar decided to restyle
No, not really. Besides Garnet everyone looked sickly and deformed. Toning down her grotesque style is probably the best thing she could do for the show, both in terms of animation and general design.
The show is supposed to have storyboarders besides Sugar in it. Can you imagine everyone purposefully trying to ape her style? I love it but it's so easy to make ugly in an unappealing way instead of ugly in an appealing way.
Except for Pearl's design I prefer the look of the pilot. Perhaps only because I think the show proper is hella ugly.
Also I liked the more serious tone. It was obviously a Sugar product and the show is almost like a parody of that style.
I wish Sugar storyboarded every episode of SU with other people advising her on story. Not the other way around.
You could do it in the past when the standards for storyboarders weren't lax as fuck. You go off model and you're fired. Apparently that's a bad thing now so Sugar's artstyle went down the toilet.
Personally, I prefer when a creator puts more pressure on their direction to actually make it feel like "their vision". The way SU is now, it feels like Ian JQ is the creator with Sugar as an assistant rather than the reverse.
I think it's inappropriate in a show with a lot of drama like SU. It's distracting. SU should've been Sugar's style and nothing else.
Adventure Time accommodates the big differences in storyboarder style a little better, bu I want non-sloppy art more than muh individual expression.
At first I was mad that they changed the style because the original had a lot more details and was more visually interesting. But honestly with the mood of the show we got I don't really see how the pilot designs would work for some of the episodes.
In my humble opinion:
Pilot Amethyst > Current Amethyst (I know that she is the character that changed the least, but the one I liked the most in the pilot, for me she looked perfect).
Pilot Garnet > Current Garnet (Except her gauntlets, her current Gauntlets are awesome).
Pilot Pearl = Current Pearl (I love her, but she needs a re-design, maybe a middle point).
Pilot Steven < Current Steven (Pilot Steven looked like a manchild, an old guy acting like a kid, now he looks like a kid who acts like a kid, and thats cute).
Pilot Temple < Current Temple (The current temple is awesome).
While the original look has something charming about it, I think the very "Tartakovsky without the stupid close ups" look was a good fit.
Garnet and Amethyst looked fine in the pilot, although is weird looking at pilot Garnet now and not see that blocky afro.
Pearl looks like a dyke
even though she is one but whatever, I just really like Pearl show designand Steven looks like middle aged man instead of a child.
I think a lot of design changes made to the new style were made for the better, so it's hard to say that I'm disappointed. Garnet and Pearl have vastly superior designs in the series. That said, the pilot has some really interesting colors and it would be nice if we saw that in the actual show.
I think the style in this poster would have been a great compromise. Pearl still needs her outfit from the series and her nose, and Garnet needs the cubefro. Steven having a neck in the pilot doesn't work for me.
The redesigns are more kid-friendly, softer shapes and colors and shading. Sure, I like the pilot style better, too, but I'm not going to hate on her for making it more appealing to children, when it's a children's show, on a children's network, in a children's time slot. The current style is perfect for a children's show.
I think Brianne Drouhard mentions something like this, how with Amethyst it was a pain animating hair the more volume. So that can be part of the reason for the simpler style, where artists like Lauren Zuke draw hair in a big mane that doesn't move much.
I don't like the show, but the new designs are better
They're simpler and contrast better with each other while still being cohesive (though I don't like the cube hair, but I dislike the down hair even more)
>giving a shit about how some chump right out of art school draws the character in their own crappy style
Sugar made them and has a much better artsyle, who gives a shit if it's squashing their artistic expression waaah.
They can go shit up Adventure Time even more if they want to do that.
I hate garnet's afro.
There i said it. It's unaesthetic as fuck.
>new designs are first shown
>vast majority hates them and wants the originals back
>fast forward to now
>vast majority loves them and never liked the originals
Classic fickle /co/. People here can be easily persuaded to change their mind about anything.
That's true of most people.
You think about something or just exist with it for a while and you end up realizing it's not so bad and eventually you swing around to liking it.
And I seem to recall everyone being horrified of David Bowie Pearl when the pilot first aired so that didn't seem to have changed.
you mean lack of animation and character designs so stripped down there's nothing to animate?
damn I miss real flowing hair and clothes from the pilot. ANIME CAN DO IT WHY CAN'T YOU???
It's cheaper. And ultimately that's all that matters in western animation.
it is a big problem in the modern western animation that everyone 'streamlines' until it's bland crap. read some of John K's stuff about the ripping friends and you can get a good picture of whats happening. basically he would send key frames into a studio to have them animate a few scene and they would re-draw the frames he sent in to tone down the style, which was terrible for him because he was selling his over the top style. he even flew in and did a breakdown of what he wanted and how he wanted them to treat his show (the show he was paying them to animate) to try and get them on the same page as him. and they still kept streamlining and re-drawing his frames till it was all bubbly uninspired crap. there is probably an element of that with SU her frames or boards get sent along in the pipeline and someone else "pluses" it by smoothing everything out and making everything more standard and bland.
in my mind it's a too many cooks problem. everyone wants to leave a mark or justify their spot in the pipeline and change something. often just for the sake of changing something, not because it was necessary.
I like how much freedom the boarders have in SU. It causes some awkwardness sometimes but overall makes the characters feel really expressive and not too stiff.
Damn, I wish the production I'm animating on was like that. Fucking pixar concept art wannabe geometric super stiff designs....
It would cost a heck of a lot of money to keep all the detail of Rebecca's style. Lines, lines everywhere. Couldn't be worse than 1000-layers-of-shading 80's anime though.
This is what has to happen if you want some huge multi-season cartoon. The original pilot was Sugar at her absolute best, to have a pilot to show off to producers to go "This is what I can do and this is what you want on the air", and then you have to compromise and bargain your way down to a comfortable medium that's affordable and easy to work with.
Like, of course something that detailed would be great, but money is money, and I'm glad her vision is being realized with a minimum of that usual compromise.
Plus honestly, as much as I loved the colors and Amethyst in the original, I like the new Pearl and Garnet more. Except for Pearl's nose. Works for the show, but I liked the flatnose look more.
I love pilot Amethyst. I hate 1st gen show Pearl because the tutu is fucking retarded, but 2nd gen is near perfect. Though I do like the dyke hair and less extreme nose.
I know everyone complains about Garnet's cubefro, but... I like it? But I do kinda wish she was less geometric and a little more organic. Especially the extreme waist-to-hip ratio, weirds me out.
Of course I was, but I understand why she did it. Animation is a collaborative process, and she's not the only one who's going to draw the characters. She needs to use designs that other people can play with and won't be hard to animate.
At least western cartoons have proper articulation and consistent animation quality.
Not to mention stylized art.
and now SU has TinyPeridot, so they're even
I agree with OP, the former designs had their unique personality and look, and I would argue that even the animation was slightly better.
However, I can also understand the reasons why they rooted for a simpler look and appeal, which comes down to budget and reliability.
The pilot designs are garbage, especially Garnet
Anyone who prefers pilot Garnet is a filthy pleb
Why would americans care how easy it is
They don't even do any animating. Its all storyboarding and pre-production work here. All the other stuff is done by asians that do all the hard work.
Amethyst's design in the pilot gave me Groke vibes for some reason.
>it's a "western cartoons have good art/quality" post
>it's always GF backdrops/parts from the opening
Any other example or is that all ya got?
>They don't even do any animating
Joe Johnston disagrees.
i'm satisfied with what we got.
I liked the level of detail they put into the pilot backgrounds, felt late 90s as fuck. The character designs were all pretty crap except for Amethyst.
I wish their fight scenes weren't so floaty and impact-less. You'd think a bunch of weebs would be able to do a good fight but the only one I particularly liked was Ocean Gem.
I hear this a lot when talking about SU fight scenes. What feels floaty about this? Pearl is suppose to be light on her feet. Amy feels slower than Pearl, as she should, The whip has a nice CRACK feel to it. I just kind of want to understand it better cause I would like to get into animation, too, and this feels fine to me. How is it any more floaty than Tarzan sliding down tree vines effortlessly?
This. Though for me, not so much Rugrats, but I remember feeling unsettled when watching Cow and Chicken, Ed Edd and Eddy, Courage, etc. I don't think I'd be able to enjoy SU in the pilot style if I was a kid.
Dude, the boards are basically the keys. The chinamen are doing in-betweens, clean-up, and color -- all the slave labor, sure -- but the Muricans are basically supervising animators. (+story and layout, don't forget)
They ARE animating entire episodes. Just not in-betweening them.
>it is a big problem in the modern western animation that everyone 'streamlines' until it's bland crap. read some of John K's stuff about the ripping friends and you can get a good picture of whats happening.
Uh, yeah. HE'S the best person to listen to. Obviously.
He kind of is, actually. Say what you want about his grotesque art, but its detailed grotesque art. Streamlining it isn't just counter intuitive to that end, bit it also just applies this mentality that animation HAS to be simple. It negates the idea of key driven shows rather than board driven ones. It creates an uncompromising norm that limits animation.
They're from promo art she drew before the pilot
Personally, I think that less frames would be better on that scene, like on the earlier giff - >>77753879
You get a better look at the action.
I just love Pearl final design so much, even though at first I didn't like it but she grew in me.
Yeah they really could do better with making fight scenes feel more punchy. Dynamic camera angles and appropriately timed cuts, and little touches like slowing or quickening frame rate slightly to make impacts really look like they hurt. Shouldn't be hard for a bunch of weebs.
Yes, because more interesting with all the Crystal Gems as Big Sisters instead of just Ame. Also, Lars having the hots for them all making Sadie mass jealous.
but didn't he say he couldn't see what was wrong with the animation, not that it couldn't be any better for the budget? logically you should look at the most expensive productions to see the top quality animated fight scenes.
You say that as if Japs usually aim for consistency. Have you ever heard of Sakuga?
What's better, and if the studio is to be believed, is that their budget isn't anything special. The studio is just following Murata's enthusiastic footsteps with OPM.
I think both types cam learn from one another. Never the less, THIS IS /co/.
not people, just mods
>Using a show that uses tons of stills that don't even show the mouth moving as an example.
>Let's be fair, comparing anything to OPM's animation quality is absolutely unfair.
Not really, it doesn't have a huge budget and there's its fair share of low quality moments as well, the people working on it just know how to handle a budget and all their aninators are outsourced from different studios mainly BONES. Its quality isn't anything to gawk about in comparison to other 12 episode anime from BONES or KyoAni.
Should have gone with this one to be honest.
Am I the only one who looks at these designs and sees form following function?
Pilot designs were not Mom designs. They were more explicitly androgynous, and the Gems overall are most definitely female in personality.
I read a while ago from Valve's design team that they made their Team Fortress 2 characters they way they are so you can easily recognize them by their outline. I think the same applies in this case. You see the square hair (hey that rhymes) and you know it's Garnet. You see a short wavy haired silhouette, and you know it's Amethyst. You see a bird, and you know it's Pearl.
it's funny when fans animate better fights
this actually looks better
>let's make the obvious tumblr culture hairstyle imitations even MORE obvious and make everyone ugly and confirm once and for all that tumblr can't draw aesthetically pleasing noses
Nope , the new style grew on me.
'm disappointed in the awful S2 , that is just "puting and agenda " the season" and no more fun or adventures/weekly villains".
Fuck Sugar for that S1-->S2 change was AT S3->S4/5/6 all over again.
Just fuck Sugar the snowflake.
You are a retarded nigger If you think that S2 is bad.
Literally show me one moment where they try to push an agenda in S2.
Steven cross-dressing was meant for laughs so don't even think of posting that.
