Yeah, that's pretty much it. It has a "ongoing plot" but it doesn't do much to have an ongoing story, but the episodes that stand their own still don't have much going on, when you look back.

CUTE AND PERFECT

Go in expecting a cute/decently funny cartoon with 10-minute episodic plots (but also some continuity) and a nice art style and you probably won't be disappointed, especially since you like Star's design already. If you stick around for the more dramatic moments and the actually-existent season 1 plot (begins more or less halfway through the season) it might even exceed your expectations.

It's not for everyone, but it's nowhere near as shit as it can be made out to be on /co/ sometimes either, sometimes by people who haven't watched it but assume it's "tumblr" or an anime ripoff-- it's just not as good as some of the best TV/cartoons. I think the viewing experience is more enjoyable if you watch all the episodes close together instead of over a period of weeks/months, like when it first aired. You can see smaller details being referenced later on, and not get your expectations too high through waiting for more over a long period.

One of the biggest complaints I see, that I mostly agree with, is how useless/generic the villain is. This actually becomes an issue that is commented on and dealt with in the show, which might make things more watchable if you know that going in.

subpar show that got a bit better as it went along, cute moments are in abundance, jokes could be better though.
animation that varies in quality, sometimes it's pretty fluid and nice and at other times it can be pretty janky and stiff
Star and Marco are great and bounce off each other well, most other characters dont really get much love though

I didn't think Quest Buy was that great or memorable when it aired, but I rewatched it recently and thought it was entertaining and better than I gave it credit for at the time. I think if you don't want to start with the first episode, it's pretty representative of the characters of Star, Marco, and the villains, as well as the general tone of the series.

Also it's paired with Cheer Up Star; I think it's better than that one. Kind of a dumb title though.

It's not for everyone. The series suffers early on with episodes too short and lolrandom sometime, but as the series progresses it gets better. If you want to skip bad moments, ask for the core episodes. Anyways, the first season is kinda short, so you better watch the whole thing.
Right now I'm a fan of the show, but it took me a while to like it. In fact, it was Mewberty the episode that hooked me to the series and not because of the monstergirl situation, but the soul crushing moment at the end. Give it a try, you may like it.

Her design makes me cringe. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get past it to enjoy the story.

I've only watched one episode of it at a friend's house. Overall I didn't find it that bad, nothing special either but there was something about it that made me not care to pick it up. Some villain made the girl destroy her wand and that ended up becoming an emotional movement because oh no no more magic? but then literally out of fucking nowhere a tiny pony shows up, gets inside of the wand and fixes/upgrades it. My friend said that it's always like that, where any kind of real problem gets resolved in stupid ways.

That's how I felt too, but in a positive way.

The wand being powered by a little unicorn, which looks close to dying when the wand is close to losing power in Quest Buy, and then its ghost appearing in the finale after Star destroys the wand, implying the spell just killed it.

At least I read its first appearance as a recurring joke for the episode that would never come up again. I don't think I even thought about it again until the last episode.

I would personally recommend the later episodes, as it feels like the creators got more comfortable as they went on, but the earlier part of the series is fairly good too.

If nothing else, I would recommend watching the St Olga's episode because god damn does it feel way different to the rest of the series. For a show with music punctuating most anything, the lack of music in that episode is almost unsettling.
